Ordinarily the Motor Torpedo Boat Squardron ing Center in Rhode Island was a place bristling with activity. From the harber could be heard the deep throated rumble of the great Packard engines that sent the boats through the water at high speed. With three of these engines to a boat you actually had a high speed float- ing power plant in each torpedo boat, Armed with anti-aircraft guns and with torpedoes ond depth charges, these deadly hit-and-run crafts were giving the United Stotes Novy 0 good moral lift of a time when things looked dif- ficult for us during World War Il. For ‘ar this center,,the Navy was training ing out crews to man these deadly became known, consisted of two Commissioned ‘Officers and nine enlisted men. The Boat Captain and the Executive Officer made up the list of the Commissioned Officers. One Gunner's Mate, on Torpedoman, one Radioman, one Quartermaster, three Engineers, one Cook, and one Seaman made up the list of the enlisted men. The train- ing was thorough and divided into four main subjects. That was Gunnery, which included ‘among other things such depth charges, ond. smok Seamanship sand. Navigoti main subject. Communications, which included radio, visual signaling, and tactics made up the third main subject. The fourth consisted of En- gineering which actually was @ course on the boat's engiries, The skipper of the PT Boat 206 was on the flying bridge ond next to him was his executive officer. Jonas Dowddll and John Otis were both ‘Ensigi Boat Sapa Bares They hed a training. As the boat docked, Ensign John Otis, who was the executive officer, pointed to o familiar figure waiting for them. “look at Frank Ward! He's bubbling over with some kind of excitement. Let's hear what he has to sey.” s. The personnel of a "PT Boat" as the craft . A minute later the two officers joined their friend who told them the news. “Captain Bob Hartley is’here. Orders are for all of us to report to the auditorium, Something's up in the air. Could be that we are going to see some fighting sooner than we expected.” As the word went around the base that Cap- tain Bob Hartley, the fomous hero of the one- sided battles in which a crippled American Navy put up a valiant fight, was here in person, an air of expectancy grasped every person at base. They all reported to the auditorium. Vice- Admiral Thomas Kent spoke. “Captain Hartley needs no introduction. deeds are in the heart of every Navy man. He is here on an official mission and will speak to you briefly.” A man about thirty-five, tall and erect, faced the cheering group. When the spontaneous re- action had subsided he spoke. “Th our ever bas been the slightest doubt in 1ds about the outcome of this war. We because of two reasons. Right is on our side and we are Americans. Our great industrial power is harnessed to the task of creating battle- ships, airplane carriers, submarines, ‘and landing craft. We shall be soon ready to take the offensive in a manner which will smash the enemy in the Pacific. However, we feel that even now we can hit them in a deadly manner. I need the crews for eight PT Boats to volunteer for a mission in the Pacific. The nature of it will only be told to you when we approach our ob- jective. But this much | can say. You will all be considered expendable, ond that also includes myself. | doubt if one of us will return alive. Those who wish’ to volunteer will please stand Ee Every man in that auditorium arose in unison. Captain Hartley then continued speaking. “We shall decide in a falr way the eight Grows to be picked for the etlion. Since @ boat depends alot upon the make-up of its crew for efficiency, we shall take each boat as it now is constituted on the records. No changes will be made. You will live together and die to- gether." Three days later the crews of the eight select- ed groups were flawn fo the Pacific coast. En- signs Jonas Dowdell, Otis, and Frank Ward were among the group. “Wonder wher ‘ed Ensign Dowdell. “Some place in the Pacific,” answered Ensign Ward. “Maybe one of those South Sea Islands where you can fest all day long in the sunshine. Never worry about working. Stretch out your hand and you find a meal on every tr we go from here?” que: From San Francisco the men went southward till they come to a smoll port. There they were. put aboard a freighter. At the end of two weeks the freightex. stopped for a rendezvous with a large submarine. The men were then trasferred to the undersea craft. Conditions were exceed- ingly crowded. “bet sardi then we d 1s in a tin can hove more room jokingly remarked Frank Ward. “If oiling you will make you more comfort able, then that tan be arranged," smiled Captain Hartley. rought the men to within eye~ land. Rubber rafts were used to take the men ashore. A short distance from the beach they received a surprise. A small clump of trees were moved aside and they walk- ‘ed down several steps into a concealed bomb- proofed room, "Thes: gre our secre! headquarters for this explained Bob Hartley. "Get a good night's sleep and tomorrow | shall explain to you our mission.” The next morning the assembled men listened carefully as Captain Bob Hartley unfolded the daring plan he had in mind. “We know that the Japanese have been planning an invasion of Australia. So certain are they of success that they have already print- ed invasion money for theit troops. They do ex- pect some opposition from combined American, Australian, and Dutch ships. The first section of that, invasion fleet, consisting of three battle- ships and two airplane carriers, is due east of here in about o week, It will be protected by destroyers and submarines. We have a new powerful torpedo. If we can attack them as Gorkness sets in, we have o fair chance of suc- cess. Shoot out every searchlight with our ma- chine guns. Set up.a smoke screen te upset them. Dart in and out to confuse their defensive fire. Drop our depth charges to wreck their subma- rines, We'll repay them for Pearl Harbor, On the south side of this little island is a lagoon. Con- cealed in it are eight completely equipped PT Boats. My ship is called “Torpedo Thrower” and Il be in command of Ensign Frank Ward. Call it my miniature flags! = Admiral Hokito was in high spirits as his ships were headed towards Australia. He was stand- ing on the bridge of his flagship as the sun went down. For on that day, the setting of the sun was to be more than an act of nature. It was to be a symbol of the setting sun of a country that made a bid for mastery in the East. He noticed @ rising column of smoke ond wos puzzled, It could be that an enemy fleet was Iéaded to- wards him. A message was quickly sent to one of the cirplane carriers. There was darkness in the air as the Japanese planes left the flight deck of the Carrier ISGO. They dropped fla into the water and saw nothing because of the smoke cloud. A terrific explosion ripped the |S- GO as two of the new deadly torpedoes fired from PT Boat A, hit their mark. As seorchlights turned on, they were quickly smashed. One ip and three cruisers were also victims of the tin fish. The protective destroyers started firing wildly and into each other as. conf sion grasped the Japanese fleet. Some of the sub- marines tried to surface and they were smashed by the depth charges that were being thrown in all directions by the PT Boats. In and out darted the PT Boats until their sup- ply of torpedoes had been exhausted. Then fol- lowing orders they headed back to their base of operation. The morning sun had not yet come up from the horizon. Time was the essence. The wounded men as well os all others were taken down into the bomb-proofed shelter. They'll start blofting this place as soon os they get their second wind," predicted Captain Hartley. “All our boats are in, though most are damaged. We'll never get out of here.alive.” But those two predictions were wrong. For after the war, Captain Bob Hartley and the brave men learned the reason why. The surviv- ing Japanese ships had: turned’ around and headed back to the Island Empire. Admiral Hokito who was still olive made his report. “Enemy fleet outnumbered us three times. Greatest number of enemy ships ever collected. in Pacific. We fought brayely and destroyed two of their battleships, eight of their cruisers, and one airplane corrier, Necessary to retu‘n home fo take core of our wounded.’ : —THE END— ~ GOBS HAVE NO TECHNIQUE?
