History of Presidio, San Francisco Presidio

 Once a post of the U.S. Army, today the Presidio of San Francisco
is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the
most visited parks in America. The 1,500-acre Presidio is both a
national park and a National Historic Landmark District. The
Presidio welcomes millions of visitors each year who come to hike
on the 24-mile trail network, enjoy museums, art, and cultural
attractions, engage with history, and explore the Presidio’s beautiful
views and wild natural areas. The Presidio is also a community
where 3,000 people live and where nearly 200 innovative
organizations are located. The park is home to foundations,
technology companies, non-profits, cultural institutions,
recreational organizations, restaurants, and more.

Climate & Geographic Overview

Geologic Setting
Climate
The coastal areas of central and southern California have a, Mediterranean climate, which occurs
on the west coasts of continents at mid-latitudes throughout the world. These regions are
characterized by temperate, wet winters contrasted with warm, dry summers. The average
rainfall in central California ranges from 15 to 55 inches per year, with almost all precipitation
occurring between November and April. Winter storms, typically yield one to three inches of rain
over the course of several days and are separated by periods of clear, mild weather. Rain is rare
during the summer drought, which can last up to seven months.
California's mountains and valleys create microclimates in the state's coastal region. Most
notably, mountains parallel to the coast produce rain shadows and drier interior valleys. Gaps in
these coastal ranges permit ocean fog to penetrate inland, providing some relief from summer
heat and drought. During the summer, San Francisco receives significant moisture and cooling
and from the coastal fog. Consequentially, the warmest weather of the year is often found during
fall and spring.

Geologic Setting

The San Francisco Bay forms an exceptional natural harbor that for Native Americans was an
ideal home for millennia. The ideal harbor that the bay presented caused the Spanish to
established a "presidio" here at the end of the San Francisco peninsula.

The formation of the rocks that underlie the Presidio took place earlier...a lot earlier. Like
tens of millions of years earlier.

The geology you see around San Francisco is the result of forces along the Pacific and North
American plates. Today, the Pacific Plate is slowly creeping north past the North American
Plate, forming the San Andreas fault system. San Francisco Bay was created by movement
on these faults about 650,000 years ago.

10
Regional Characteristic:

The Presidio of San Francisco, one of America's greatest natural and cultural treasures, has been transformed from a military base to
a national park site unlike any other. It will pioneer a new role for a national park by creating a global center dedicated to the world's
most critical environmental, social, and cultural challenges.

The Presidio's new role symbolizes the swords-to-plowshares concept. On this site of incomparable beauty and history, we can link
our military past with a future full of promise and possibility. This transformation is inspired by an emerging definition of protection -
one that recognizes that defense no longer must be based solely on political and military strength, but on stewardship of the world's
human and physical resources through global cooperation. Long the guardian of the Golden Gate, the Presidio now stands ready to
house a network of organizations dedicated to improving human and natural environments and addressing our common future. The
site will be used as a working laboratory to create models of environmental sustainability that can be transferred to communities
worldwide. Its inspirational setting will provide a respite for reflection and personal renewal for its many visitors.

The Presidio's significant location has produced an unprecedented concentration of cultural, natural and recreational resources -
distinctive architecture, unique ecological systems, inviting parklands, and spectacular vistas. With its context of the Golden Gate, it 's
a powerfully evocative and relevant location at which to tell sweeping stories of California and western history.

A 220-year continuous history as a military garrison under three flags distinguishes the Presidio as a National Historic Landmark with
a rich collection of historic architecture, engineered structures, and landscape features. Now surrounded by San Francisco's dense
residential neighborhoods, the Presidio's open space has become an urban oasis and critical refuge for plants and wildlife, including
rare and endangered species, at an important geographical and ecological location. The Presidio's bay and coastal shorelines and
forested landscape offer recreational opportunities for active pursuits as well as places for solitude, retreat, and discovery.

Transformation of the Presidio from military post to park is a complex challenge. Unlike any other park, the Presidio contains more
than 800 buildings, a research facility, a golf course, a national cemetery, and a full range of recreational and community services on Presidio of San Francisco
its 1,491 acres. Following transfer of the post to the National Park Service in 1994, a community planning process was initiated that
resulted in a General Management Plan for the Presidio. That plan called for the preservation and protection of the park's resources
and for bringing organizations together that focus on finding solutions to environmental, cultural and social issues of global scale.

Because of the high cost of maintaining the Presidio's buildings and infrastructure, in 1996 the U.S. Congress established the Presidio
Trust to lease and manage the property. The Trust is tasked with transforming the post into a financially self sufficient park by the
year 2013 through the leasing of property on the Presidio, while at the same time preserving its natural, scenic and historic resources.
On July 1, 1998, management of the non-coastal areas of the Presidio were transferred to the Trust. The Presidio Trust's vision for
the future of the Presidio was released in the form of a management plan in the May of 2000.

11
Project Site
The existing building is located in an open area of the Presidio district of San Francisco. It is located near the
intersection of Anza Avenue and Owen Street. There is an existing parking lot on the west side of the building,
across Anza Ave.

The Existing Building

As are other buildings in the Presidio District, the historic architectural style of the building is Mission Revival. The building has a cement plaster exterior with a red clay tile roof.
The building's structure is steel post and beam with composite deck flooring supported by lightweight steel joists. The building has two stories over a basement story. The total
interior building area is 6600 square-feet per floor. The building has a modern, fully automatic sprinkler system.

Findings & Summary
 Presidio San Francisco is a beautiful place and has a great military and historic background. When I started this project I was very excited
about what was in store. As I gathered my research together I noted the military aspect and the greenery that surrounded this site. I have
been to San Francisco and a site like this that is open and green was a surprise to see. A challenge within this green site would be the upkeep
of the grass and plants since it is a rarity, the wind and fog that surrounds San Francisco itself, the open sunlight that is exposed right at the
existing building and the expense that the Mission Revival building can pose for upkeep.

The historic identity of this site is near and dear to my current career because of the military aspects. The usage before its beautiful array of grass
and open space was utilized as an military base. But, before the “Spanish military and civilian settlers that arrived to establish military garrisons
(presidios), missions, and settlements”. There was the Ohlone/Costanoan native Americans that called Presidios home. The transition that Presidio
has played has been a very diverse one. The Spanish, Mexican and U.S. have utilized this area to house, stage and provide for their military soldiers.
After observing the location throughout my research I couldn’t help but note how close it was to the harbor and marsh areas. This helped me
realize how much of an asset this location was to any type of military. The housing of the military in this location helped those that were effected by
the earthquake in 1906. Now, because of the large amount of space throughout the buildings and fields the army was able to come to the aid for so
many san Francisco citizens effected by the earthquake. The citizens were hesitant to get aid from the army, but with time, the civilians gained their
trust towards them. As time continued two of the greatest aspects occurred. The Military Intelligence school and the military architecture that is
housed in Presidio. Military intelligence is my Rate or job in the Navy, so this sparked my interest right away. The training and knowledge that was
used in a very keen way during the war with Japan (WWII) was simply clever. Along with military intelligence, some of the most historic military
architecture was established in presidio as well. These two aspects paved the way for myself and others. It excites me and just makes me want to get
on a flight to SF today, just so I can go be apart of the history and feel all the history within all the building walls. Speaking of excitement and the
past, appreciation is not as common as it used to be these days. So, something that I respect about San Francisco is how they have turned Presidio
into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Within this new transition from military to a recreational site, the preservation, appreciation and
current standing of the future within Presidio is safe, strong and seems to stand tall as a place that will never be forgotten. The landmark itself will
continue to go on forever. It has too, there is too much history and life still dwelling there.

Concept Statement:
The National Geographic Society supports research, exploration, and conservation in every part of the globe every year. Their focus is keying onto projects
that emphasize on science, technology, and storytelling to help people better understand human history, culture, and conserve some the planet.
~National Geographic (NG)

The grasp of knowledge and unity will be the focus for the projects atmosphere. The conceptual
approach to the design involvement is to create a mix-used space with evolving fluidity. This means
that the museum/office (Mixed-used) experience and creativity is constantly changing. This concept
will be useful to adhere to the ever changing exhibitions and office space use. A contemporary
museum/office experience is ideal, but will also incorporate the mission and history of NG; in hopes of
portraying the same message for a hundred years to come as it does today. The mix-used building will
integrate a cross-reference between exhibited objects and the building itself as a ‘living interactive
digital space’ as much as possible. Making the education and knowledge that NG would like to display
understandable and easily conveyed to all those that visit.

Codes and Accessibility Analysis (Exit Travel)

• Because the total occupancy load for the 1st and 2nd floor falls in the
range of the required 2 Exits per 1- 500 occupancy load. This floor would
need 2 exits.
• The codes have minimum and maximum requirements for the width and
the length (travel distance) of a corridor. In the IBC, these requirements
are noted in Table 1018.2, “Minimum Corridor Width,” as shown in
Figure 4.10. The occupancy, occupancy load, and typical use also affect
the required width of a corridor. The travel distance is limited so that
occupants will reach an exit within a reasonable amount of time. (Travel
distances are described later in this chapter.) Although 44 inches (1118
mm) is typically the minimum required width, the type of use and the
occupant load can affect the final corridor width. Additional
considerations may affect the required corridor width as well.
• 1st Floor: Exit access travel distance: 224 * .2 = 45
• 2nd Floor: Exit access travel distance: 41 * .2 = 9

COLOR PALETTE STRATEGY
Triad, Analogous and Complementary color harmonies exist within my color
palette.
• I used the National Geographic photo to help decipher my desired color palette. I
utilizing the adobe color website, where I was able to upload the photo right to the
website itself. Once it was upload I played around with some of the color and came up
with what I would call a bold, sophisticated and longevity worthy palette.
National Geographic's Main color is a /orange combination.
• These colors conveys HAPPINESS, EXCITEMENT AND ENTHUSIASM. Like SUNSHINE, I
want to associated this with warmth and energy. I would also to link CHANGE like
autumn leaves give off during the fall season. I want to link this color with the evolving
years of change within the National Geographic's history throughout the office areas.
To support and complement the yellow/orange hues.
• The blue-green colors will help COMMUNICATE and EXPRESS the theme of TRUST that
the customers have in National Geographic.
• Show the appreciation to the LOYAL fans and viewers of the National Geographic over
the years.
• Display the confidence and intellectual appeal that the National Geographic always
adheres too
• These colors will be used in displays, branding, backdrop lighting and any text that
emphasizes appreciation
The sense of HOME is going to be a theme to support everything that is
encapsulated with in a home itself.
• Since brown represents earth, wholesomeness, security, grounding, and foundation.
• Wood and brown natural elements will be present all throughout the to display the
comfort, safety and nurturing aspect that nature brings.
SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

Every aspect of the National Geographic was achieved by utilizing the LEED-H checklist. Items that really made this building top notch were
the environmentally preferable products , aggregate for concrete and foundation , drywall or interior sheathing, enhanced combustion venting
measures (no fireplaces or woodstoves), enhanced insulation (foam insulation), efficient domestic hot water equipment (installed an ENERGY
STAR–qualified water heater), and ENERGY STAR advanced lighting (LED star bulbs). To keep the environmental and at ease appeal in the
home, cool colors of beige, light blues and greys within the tile, paint and wallpaper really set the tone in the building, so that the
environmental and natural surrounding were felt in and out of the building. Overlapping the calm at ease approach helps one stay balanced and
safe throughout the building . The light shelves and solar tubes really balance the natural lighting in the building, while the flowing wind and
curve appeal from the ceiling fans really blow you in the direction of texture within the crosshatch and perfect straight lines within the wallpaper
and engineered hardwood floors. With all the south facing windows and lighting shelves the interior really comes into scale and proportion
because the natural shadows and rays of sunshine just shine the exact type of warm and light within the building. Global awareness and being
aground breaker for a green future is a top item that National Geographic is fulfilling that will carry throughout the building with symbolism. The
is very universal in the mindset of being open and really having access to everything within the building. Nothing in the is out of date and all
aspects of the building are as modern and sustainable as can be. FSC would is being used, along with concrete foundation and foam insulation.
The finishes and furniture all have sustainable forestry initiative® compliant frames, have natural fiber fabrics and are made of naturals
elements from the USA. All the lighting selections are LED, come from the natural light of the sun and have sensors on them so they turn off
when they are not in use. The Materials insulation and maintenance is very simple and easy to maintain. Since a lot of the resources are natural
resources the occurrence of any breakage or damage won’t occur often. Energy management and mechanical systems have warranties and
have timers and systems that are easy to read and rely on if they don’t work properly.

The Sansevieria is an ideal plant for indoor spaces because it is a superb air purifier. Studies, including those performed by NASA, have consistently
shown the plant to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides—which means that industries and workspaces such as
automotive plants and shops, aircraft plants, plywood, carpeting, paint makers and sellers, printing, and offices, where these chemicals abound in the
products produced and used, would greatly benefit by keeping several Sansevieria around.
