CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As 21st Century sprang out, learning strategies are expected be developed and polished.
Educators are projected to implement more ways on how students can easily cope up the
lessons regarding to the specific respective subjects.

In this study, the researchers focus on Mathematics subject. They conducted the research to
find out how effective the Active Learning that the PUCU Institution implemented.

What is it? The PHINMA UPang College Urdaneta uses Active Learning Strategy to suffice
and meet the target knowledge they need to render to their students. As by clarification,
Active Learning strategy is define as the incorporation of more useful and qualified
methodologies where students can actively engage themselves to have participation. The
instructor or teachers must apply related materials during the class discussion and activities.

As Bonwell and Eison stated that an active learning , students participate in the process and
students participate when they are doing something besides passively listening. Hence, active
learning being applied specifically in mathematics, in which active learning’s role is to be
instructional method that engages students in the learning process. In short, active requires
students to do meaningful learning activities and think about what they are doing.

Moreover, the institution practice the said strategy to promote interactive study and to build
and strengthen the good relationship between the educators and the students But as this study
goes on, it will serve as basis to know if this matter effective or not .

The researchers hereby conclude that it needed to understand more the significance and
importance of active learning .What was the effect to the Grade 11 STEM students of PUCU
and how it influences them.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to discuss how effective the active learning that mathematic teachers applied
in their teaching style in PUCU Grade 11-STEM. It seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Why does math teacher use active learning as their way of teaching?
2. What is the difference between traditional and active learning strategy?
3. How can they assure that their students are learning?
4. What is the most effective way of teaching is the traditional way or the ‘active
learning?’
5. How did the students cope up with the way the teachers teach?

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study would be a great significant to the mathematics teachers of PUCU as it provides
them essential information. Also it could help the Grade 11-STEM students of PUCU to
broaden their understanding of why active learning is being applied.

To the MATH TEACHERS, this study would provide a beneficiary which could help to upgrade your
capacity, skills and effectiveness on your way of teaching such as the ‘active learning.’

To the STUDENTS, this study would provide them substantial information and encourage
them that ‘active learning’ isn’t that you should be nervous of, also why is it being applied to
the math subject.

To the FUTURE RESEARCHERS, this study could be a basis/base and/or supporting details
to prove their study and so does this study. Furthermore it can help to improve and polished
this study.
1.4 SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS
This study is focused only to the Grade 11 STEM students of PUCU during the school
year: 2019-2020

This study is all about the Effectiveness of the Active Learning Strategies of the
Mathematics Teachers to the Academic Performance of the PUCU Grade 11 STEM
students. The data will be gathered by using both interview and survey method to be
taken by the respondents for this study. This research will tackle the opinions or
observations on how effective on how effective does learning Active Learning
Strategies. The researchers will find out how effective the active learning is in terms of
teaching-learning process.

1.5 DEFINITION OF TERMS

ACTIVE LEARNING-is a style of teaching-process used by PUCU Institution in which
executed in all subject areas. Active learning strategy is the execution of any related
activities that aims to engage the students to have the participation during class.
BENIFICIARIES-those are the people involve on this study who can acquire the benefit
produced by this research.
BRRAINSTORMING-it can be an active learning strategy by which the group of
students engages to a group discussion where they can refer their thoughts and opinion
about the certain topic.
INSTITUTION-is an organization with educational purposes.
METHODOLOGIES-the way or strategies used by the teachers during the class.
