SUBJECT: Electronic Options – Operator Checklist, Impact Monitor, & Load Weight
Display

DESCRIPTION:

This Parts-Service Gram replaces Gram LD00028R2 to identify that this applies to all Fortis models.
Please discard all previous electronic and paper copies of that previous Gram.

Listed below are questions and answers that have been developed regarding the newest electronic options
available for Fortis products. Detailed information for programming of the Operator Checklist, Impact
Monitor and Load Weight Display can be found in 2200 SRM 1130 (Supervisor Interface) and 2200 SRM
1131 (Service Interface).

Operator Checklist
An operator performed pre-shift inspection is required by many companies to ensure the lift truck is fit for
operation prior to the driver’s next work shift. With the Operator Pre-Shift Checklist option (available in
2006), the operator can be required to answer the questions to confirm that he has inspected the unit prior
to operation. The option can be programmed to prevent starting the truck if the check was not completed or
if there was an issue that required immediate attention before the truck could be operated properly.

Q) Is the factory default to have the Checklist turned off?


A) If the feature option is ordered, it is deactivated at the factory to enable starting the
truck without any interference during manufacture and shipment. It will have to be
activated at dealer pre-delivery by a technician with service level menu access. Once activated, it
may be turned on, off, or on-stop by a technician or supervisor’s password. On-stop disables the
engine start if the operator answers any question, "No”. The operator checklist expiration time may be
changed by a technician or supervisor’s password. This is the amount of time the truck may be turned
off before an operator must answer the checklist again to restart the truck.

Q) When the Checklist is turned on, what are the initial check items that make up the default list?
A) When the checklist is turned on, there are 30 possible questions listed on the next page that can be
individually deactivated, or the entire list can be disabled if required ,by a technician or supervisor
using the technician/supervisor’s password.

Q) Will a “No” answer to a default question group result in truck shutdown?


A) Dealer personnel need to know what is going to happen when they demo this feature so that they do
not end up with an inoperable truck. If the checklist feature is ordered, it may be turned on, off, or on-
stop by a technician or supervisor’s password. On-stop disables the engine start if the operator
answers any question, "No." It disables the truck until reset by a technician or supervisor’s password.
It may also be set up to log the operator response and provide full truck functionality when the
checklist is complete.

Q) Can one or all check items be changed from the list of 30?
A) Yes, but it requires the PC Service Tool and a technician with a service level password. Changes are
limited to characters available in the display.

Q) Can you customize the menu items?


A) Yes, but it requires a PC Service Tool and a technician with a service level password. It is limited to a
total of 30 items. When a custom item is put in, it overwrites the selected factory default. Confirming
the checklist can be altered using the dash display and a technician password. Individual checklist
items may be activated or deactivated by a technician.

Q) Can the Checklist Log be viewed?


A) Yes, the supervisor can use this function to view operator password, date stamp, and engine hour
meter. The system stores up to 20 checklist log entries in the onboard log making it possible to
access the truck’s history to determine if maintenance items have been identified in the past. These
entries can be viewed by using the scroll keys on the dash display.

Q) Can the Checklist Log be cleared?


A) Yes. A technician or the supervisor can use this function to clear entries from the log.

Impact Monitor
The Impact Monitor is an effective method for reducing damage to the truck, the facility, and the
product being moved. It constantly senses the truck’s movement and looks for acute variations in
movement that may resemble the forces of impact. When an impact with damage is recorded and
the operator is known, he may be held accountable which may deter others form operating the
trucks improperly. If an impact occurs hard enough to trigger the monitor, the truck is shut down
immediately, the alarm sounds and the truck cannot be restarted until it is reset by a supervisor or
service password. The reaction is not programmable.

Note: If a truck is ordered with the impact sensor, this feature is "turned off" (disabled) as a default
setting from the factory to enable moving the truck during shipping without interruption. It must be
turned on by a technician with a service level password during pre-delivery. We suggest that a
technician accompany the truck to the customer site to turn it on. The feature is enabled through
the onboard service menus, using the service technician’s password, and the technician can
perform adjustments according to the specific customer application.

Q) Can we quantify the low and high end of the scale?


B) The factory defaults are based on extensive field testing by our supplier but they may need
some adjustment to suit a specific application. It is not important that the technicians be able
to relate the settings to some comparison. If the customer wants it to be more sensitive, the
settings have to be lower (i.e. for handling glass as an example) If the customer wants it less
sensitive, they have to be higher (i.e. for crossing railroad tracks as an example).

Q) What are the rates of adjustment? Half a G? Tenth of a G? What is the range?
A) Rates of Adjustment:
i. The soft impact threshold may be set from 0.2 – 2.5 g’s in 0.1 g increments.
ii. The soft impact averaging time may be set from 1 – 12 in increments of 1. Each
increase of “1” is an increase in 5 msec (Milliseconds) of the duration a soft impact must
be present.
iii. The hard impact threshold may be set from 0.5 – 3.0 g’s in 0.1 g increments. Normally,
the hard impact threshold is set 0.5 g’s above the soft impact threshold.
iv. The averaging time may be set from 1 – 2 in increments of 1. Each increase of “1” is an
increase in 5 msec (Milliseconds) of the duration a soft impact must be present.

Q) Is there a default setting for when the feature is turned on?


B) Yes. The default is established by the technician and will vary depending upon customer
application

Q) Does monitor indicate an impact force that would do serious damage to a truck?
A) No. It only indicates a setting that corresponds to an impact trigger level.

Load Weight Display

¾ The Load Weight Display provides a simple, easy-to-read indication of the load on the forks that is
beneficial for arranging loads for shipment or estimating contents of containers where absolute
accuracy is not required.
¾ Using the Load Weight Display option can avoid the need for a full-scale attachment which reduces the
usable capacity of the truck by hundreds of pounds, increases susceptibility to damage, and can cost
thousands of dollars. Scales also require periodic re-calibration which is done through a scale
technician, so there is ongoing maintenance costs associated with the legal scale.
¾ The Load Weight Display senses hydraulic pressure in the lift circuit to establish the load being lifted
and has a tolerance of ± 100 lbs. when properly calibrated (Refer to operating instructions in the service
manual).
¾ This load weight indicator is NOT legal for trade. A trade-legal scale attachment that fits between the
carriage and the forks must be able to register exact amounts to an accuracy level below .005% of load
weight. For many applications, that level of accuracy is not required and does not justify the cost
of the scale attachment.
¾ Display Functionality - The operator chooses what they want to see on the display. If load weight is to
be displayed on the screen, use the scroll up or down buttons on the dash to get to the load weight
feature to indicate the load weight. The load weight line remains on the screen unless the operator
changes it again. Scale attachments require an externally mounted display, which can impair visibility
and is susceptible to damage. The Load Weight Display option reads right on the operator display
where all truck information is indicated. As a result, the operator only needs to look in one place rather
than two, thereby reducing fatigue.

NOTE! Trucks that were built with the 269 processor VSM are not compatible with the software options
listed in this Gram. The VSM can be identified on Hypass in the Software Resource area with the truck
serial number. There are currently no SPED options developed to convert the VSM in older trucks to
accept these new options.
