This source is written about a study that was conducted with students on their social media

interactions and how much they interact with social media on the average day. It included

statistics and results of the study. The article goes on to give tips on how students can better

protect themselves and be smart when online. This revealed many of the areas that teens can

struggle in or are most comfortable in. The article also discusses the best practices to become

safer social media users.

This article is written with no bias as it is simply informative. It gives general information

that any person can find useful when wanting to be as safe as possible in their online

interactions. This source was also written pretty recently, proving their study to be pretty

reliable. Also, this article was published by the American Library Association and is found in

the Saint Johns River library databases.

This source relates to my topic because it highlights parts that teens can often get caught

up in within social media, therefore providing places where their perceptions of certain things

can get distorted. I most likely will use this source in my paper because it gives good backup

to support my point that students can often be misled by social media.

This source was written about a study that was conducted to see the difference in scores of

non-users and users of social media. Much of the article claimed social media was likely to have

a positive effect on the scores when being used to help study, however there was mention that it

can tend to be quite addictive to a student and hinder their studying rather than progress it. The

article provided statistics of the study and the results which actually showed that there wasn’t a

great advantage for the users in their test scores. It actually went on to say that the scores for

non-users was slightly better.

This source was a bit biased toward using social media which is actually against what my

research is, however the author did a good job at also including the negatives. The author is

biased because he builds up the purpose of the study being that they wanted to prove that social

media can have a positive effect. I still find this source to be a reliable source because it was

pulled from the Bulletin of Education and Research, showing it wasn’t just any person’s random

opinion on the topic. Like some of my others, it was also published quite recently and the

statistics are all backed up by other sources at the end of the paper.

This source relates to my topic in some way because it proved that social media could, to

some extent, act as a hinder in getting good grades. Also, it would give me a study that I could

relate back to in my paper with accurate statistics. I will possibly use this for my paper as it
provides some useful information, however, it is not necessary information for the point I’m

trying to get across.

Durbin, Jessica, et al. "Social media and adolescents: What are the health risks? Primary care

providers should screen for depression and other health-related risks associated with the use of

social media by adolescents." Clinical Advisor, July 2018, p. 19+. Gale Academic OneFile,

This source gives evidence based on actual studies about the effect of social media on the

amount of depression and low self-esteem in people, most commonly young people. All the

cases that were studied, concluded that social media use is correlated with decreased self-esteem

and higher levels of depression. It also came to say that higher social media use leads to higher

anxiety levels and less sleep. Lastly, it included that increased use and depressive moods can

lead users to go on and cyber bully others.

This source is not biased either because it is giving the stats through several studies that

were conducted on social media. I trust this as a reliable source because after quoting so much

statistical evidence, the authors gave credit to several other sources at the end of their paper.

Also, this source was published within the last two years so I trust their evidence to be accurate

as well as the fact that it has come from the college databases.

This source relates to my topic because it gives statistical evidence to back up the claims that I

am trying to convince my readers of. Also, it gives that evidence with statements that very much
support and relate to the points I had laid out under my thesis. This relates to my other sources as

it adds statistical evidence and case studies that help further prove points that were laid out in

other sources. I will definitely be using this in my paper because it gives me hard evidence that I

am confident in using for my paper.

Ehmke, Rachel, and Child Mind Institute. “How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers.” Child

Mind Institute, childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/.

This source discusses a lot of different issues that mostly young adults face through and

because of social media however, one important thing is that their view on proper

communication is distorted. Teens and young children who grow up spending much time on

social media do not properly develop skills to communicate and interact in social situations. This

being because they have only ever been talking to others through a screen. In this article, a

doctor also points out that many teens, particularly girls, are at risk of developing a negative

view of themselves when comparing to others that they see daily online.

This source does not have much bias; however, the author definitely discourages against

certain behaviors and actions within social media. I very much trust this as a reliable source

because it comes from the Child Mind Institute, and a “.org” website. Along with this, the author

includes insight from the doctor and other studies that back up her claims.

This source relates to my topic because it brings the attention right to how social media

affects the perception of teens self-image and how their views and opinions can be distorted.

This relates to my other sources because it shows how a child’s mind works in many of the cases

that the other sources had studies on. I will most definitely be using this in my paper because I
know I can trust this information, coming from a health and mental institute that focuses its

studies on the development of a child’s mind. Also, it will allow me to bring in very strong

points that I can confidently back up.

Krietz, Chloe, et al. “The Negative Effects of Social Media for Teens.” Smart Social, 11 Nov.

2019, smartsocial.com/negative-effects-of-social-media/.

This source gives an overall summary of all the negative effects that social media has on

today’s teens and even older generations. It talks about things like increased anxiety and

depression, loss of sleep, fear of missing out, and a negative body-image that are all brought

about by overuse and misuse of social media. This article, however, does still mention positives

that can be brought about through social media such as increased communication across distant

places, community building, self-expression, and access to expert health information. Overall,

this source was a good quick read to become aware of the common consequences that come from

using social media.

This source was not biased as it gave way to both sides of the argument on what effect

social media has on people today. I find this source to be a somewhat legitimate source. It brings

forth several points that I have found evident through other articles, however, it does not have the

evidence or studies as much to back up those claims. This is the kind of article that many would

be attracted to for a little bit of insight, but maybe not as much for a paper needing heavily tested

points and claims. This article doesn’t very clearly state who the author is at first view of the

page, which makes me skeptical of how reliable this source really is.
This source relates to others and my topic as it lists most consequences of social media

that one could think of. It also gives a lot of points that the average person would point out when

thinking on the topic. I most likely will not use this source on my paper because, although it does

make good points, most of them have already been mentioned in my other sources that actually

have evidence or statistics to back them up.

This article focused mainly on the effect of social media on girls and their body-image. It

made very good points such as quoting another Instagram star that social media really is “fake”

and in that proving that what we see online is not often real life. The article went on to give data

from some girls’ personal stories that they do often find themselves worried about the number of

likes they are getting and how people are seeing them through their pictures. This source also

included the personal story of an Instagram star that went through much hate and critique after

deciding to leave social media. Overall, the main idea of this source is that social media can have

a very negative effect on the way girls go on to live their daily lives and see themselves within

their daily lives.

I do not see this source as being very biased because the author is writing this to inform

the public of how susceptible young girls, specifically, are to facing challenges due to social

media. The author does focus on many of the negative aspects, but she never seems to include
her own personal opinion within that. I find this source to be very reliable because it is published

under a well-known magazine brand and also within a “.org” website. Also, this source includes

a couple testimonies, that are impossible to deny and establish credibility.

This source relates to my topic really well because it discusses the entire topic of having a

negative body-image because of social media’s influence and the other ways that social media

will distort the perceptions of young girls. This relates to my other sources because they all

discuss the consequences of social media. I will definitely be using this in my paper because I

have learned that it is a very reliable source and it is directly contributing to the biggest point I

am trying to bring attention to in my paper.

This source was mainly about the positive and negative effects that come from using social

media, specifically with undergraduate students. They explained how social media does

sometimes provide good outlets for students to find others to connect with, especially for help

with certain assignments or classes. At the same time, the article highlights several of the

negative effects that come with using social media. In this, it was explained that social media

will often cause one to lose confidence in themselves, waste far too much time, or even put

themselves in a dangerous position.

This article is not very biased one way or another as it does a very good job at

highlighting the positives and negatives that come from using social media. I find this as a

reliable source as the author published his paper through the University of Idaho Library and

it is available in the Library of Philosophy and Practice. Along with this, the source was

written a little less than two years ago, showing that the information presented was fairly

recent. Lastly, the author gives credit to several other sources for his information, so I know

he’s not just making it all up.

This source relates to my topic because it goes to give information on the way that social

media is affecting this generation. It specifically highlights students and how it can be a huge

distraction for people of this age. I can also use this in my writing to present the other side of

the argument, in which social media can be healthy for people to some extent. This source

will be good for my paper because it provides good statistics for both sides of my argument.

P, Kim. “Negative Effects of Social Media.” CreditDonkey, CreditDonkey, 23 July 2019,

www.creditdonkey.com/negative-effects-social-media.html.

This source is written to inform its reader of the common and mostly well-known

consequences that come from having any sort of social media account. It focuses a lot on the

damage that it can do to one’s life, specifically in how it changes from when you have no social

media to when your life is suddenly consumed with it. It includes a lot of stats on the percentages

of users on each social media platform, how often those students use each, and what the average

age of most social media users is. In conclusion, this article is a good read for someone interested

in just the surface level facts about social media’s effects.

This source is not biased because the author really only gives a lot of stats and basic facts

under specific categories. The author never really inserts their own opinion or personal belief

within any of the categories. Only at the very end of the paper, does the author sum it all up in

suggesting to be careful in how one uses social media and not overusing/misusing it, giving a

little bit of bias. I find this source to have some reliability, as they clearly state the author and the

point of the article and stay within that general topic as well. Also, this article was updated

recently, which makes me somewhat skeptical as to what information could have been changed,

leading to the possibility of it being changed again soon.

This source fits in with my topic because it gives a general outline to the points I was

looking to hit in my paper. It relates to my other sources because it has the same layout as many

of them in the way it did list off several of the consequences of social media. I will most likely

not be using this is my paper with the reason being that I don’t find this source to give any

additional information that I have not already gotten from my other sources. Along with this, it

merely provides a very surface-level knowledge of a topic I am trying to dig deeply into.

This source focuses on “polarization” that goes on within social media sites and how that

affects other aspects of social media. Polarization is used to describe when people form their own
groups with those like themselves, whether because of religion, ethnicity, and so on. The article

also pointed at segregation that goes one within these groups. This article also mentions that

many people have social media for the purpose of receiving news, these groups that are formed

most likely allow them to receive news in relation to the beliefs of their group.

There was no real bias in this source as it was more informational and not fighting for a

certain side of social media. The sole point of this article was to inform about polarization

and groups that include that in social media today. I find this source to be reliable as the

authors are affiliated with the Tokyo Institute of Technology and also a laboratory in Japan.

Along with this, the article was written fairly recently, on a study that was conducted not too

long ago.

This source could be included in my paper to show how some people on social media can

have distorted perceptions. This would be proven through the fact that many people use

social media for news, but they only really look at resources that already support their own

opinion. I may use this source for my paper because of the fact that it does include an

explanation that contributes to distorted perceptions.

This article discussed how social media programs often try to create programs based on

trying to improve mental health. It shows how in some situations it has helped; however, it

breaks down to say that it is obviously not always recorded and noticed all the small harmful

things that just one person could see. It basically proves that though some big social media

campaigns have a visible effect, they don’t reach every single little person. This source also

gives examples in how those things that certain people see can have an effect on the opinions and

perceptions they form.

This source is not biased and simply informative of the effects of mental health on any

person using social media. It gives information on a lot of the campaigns that have been used and

also includes a study that was conducted. Several authors contributed to the final product of this

paper, proving it was not just one’s opinion. It was also Published by the Oxford University

Press in the Saint Johns River database.

This source relates to my topic because it references specifically to what I am trying to say

which is how social media can have a negative effect on a person’s mental health. It’s points

specifically say points that are in the same direction as where my paper is going. I will definitely

use this source in my paper because it has a lot of useful information and pieces to back up my

thesis.
