S/S treatment involves mixing a binding reagent into the contaminated media or
waste. The terms solidification and stabilization sound similar but they describe different
effects that the binding reagents create to immobilize hazardous constituents.
Solidification refers to changes in the physical properties of a waste. The desired
changes usually include an increase of the compressive strength, a decrease of
permeability, and encapsulation of hazardous constituents. Stabilization refers to
chemical changes of the hazardous constituents in a waste. The desired changes include
converting the constituents into a less soluble, mobile, or toxic form.
A. Objectives of S/S treatment to fulfill the requirements for the disposal in a landfill
site:
Reduce potential for hazardous waste leaching
Formation of solid mass with no free liquid
Improvement in handling and physical characteristics of waste
D. Which bonding and filling agents are used for solidification/ stabilization?
They are materials with the capability to bind modified waste into solid matrix.
Contaminants are thus fixed and cannot enter the environment.
1. If the supplied waste complies with quality certificates, it is weighed and registered.
2. The waste is unloaded in an isolated zone and the bonding and filling agents are
added, alternatively mixing water, in the ratios given by ETP.
3. If the waste is dusty, then „sleeve“, as it is called, is used to reduce emissions during
unloading.
4. The material is thoroughly mixed by a hydraulic arm to achieve required
homogeneity.
5. Subsequently, the reaction mixture is disposed of in a defined landfill, and the
modified waste undergoes the process of solidification.
