GOALS: To present an oral argument using evidence; to use functional language related to agreeing,

disagreeing, and showing contrasting opinions

Procedure:

1. Please, create 18 pairs/ couples


2. Each topic belongs to 2 pairs which “For” each topic, the side on the first pair is the
“For/ pro” team, and the side on the second pair is the “Against” team that will be
determined before time for debate begins. *you can choose topic by lottery at the
moment.

3. You will debate by using the evidence and counterarguments you developed during
the team discussions. Explain that, at your signal, everyone will individually debate
with the opponent across the line for one minute. (Advanced classes could debate
for two minutes.) The person in the “For” line speaks first. After a minute, you will
tell students to “Switch!” The “For” line will move one position to the left, with the
person in the first position moving around to the end of the line, to align with a new
opponent in the “Against” line.
4. Today, you have to discuss with your partner to share your thoughts about the topic.
5. Please, be ready for both sides “for” and “against” in the same topic.

3) The death penalty is acceptable in some cases

4) Celebrities earn too much money

5) We are becoming too dependent on internet

6) Smoking should be banned worldwide

7) Homework is harmful

9) Software piracy is not really a crime

10) Video games contribute to youth violence
