REPAIR NO. 12
REPAIR THE THRUST REVERSER EXIT HEAT SHIELD

1. General

This procedure gives instructions to bond the trailing edge of a thrust

reverser cowl exit heat shield that has been found with bulging or
waviness. Bulging or waviness more than the allowable limits, is allowed
if there are no cracks or holes, and the heat shield is monitored at A-
check. Refer to (SRM 54-30-00 Allowable Damage-Thrust Reverser).
This repair removes the A-check inspection interval by restoring the
contour of the exit heat shield.

2. Repair Instructions

CAUTION: THE HEAT SHIELD IS THIN 0.012 INCH (0,30 MM) STAINLESS STEEL AND
CAN BEND EASILY. DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE TO DO THIS PROCEDURE.
DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO THE HEAT SHIELD IF TOO MUCH FORCE IS USED.

A. Remove and reform the heat shield. (Refer to Figure 201)

(1) Remove the TLPD419BS rivets that attach the exit heat shield to the
thrust reverser cowl. Use care not to damage the heat shield.

(2) Remove the exit heat shield from the thrust reverser cowl.

(3) Put the heat shield on a suitable work station to maintain proper
contour and to avoid damage during this procedure.

(4) Form the waviness or bulging of heat shield to the proper contour.
Use care to make area smooth.

B. Clean the faying surfaces of the exit heat shield and the thrust
reverser cowl.

(1) Use abrasive paper 80-120 grit to remove any contaminants from the
exit heat shield and the thrust reverser cowl.

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE CHEMICALS, READ, UNDERSTAND, AND OBEY ALL SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CHEMICALS. THESE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDE
INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MANUFACTURER, THE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA
SHEET (MSDS), AND GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS. CHEMICALS MAY CAUSE
INJURY TO YOU OR MAKE YOU SICK WHEN SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT
OBEYED. AN MSDS GIVES INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW YOU MUST SAFELY USE,
KEEP, AND DISCARD CHEMICALS. GET INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR
EMPLOYER ON HOW YOU MUST SAFELY USE, KEEP, AND DISCARD
CHEMICALS.

(2) Clean the faying surfaces of the exit fire shield and the thrust
reverser cowl with a clean lint-free cloth and the solvent. Remove
the solvent with a clean lint-free cloth before the solvent becomes
dry.

C. Etch bond area. (Refer to Figure 202.)

(1) Do a water-break test on the bond area of the heat shield and the
thrust reverser cowl, see SRM section 54-02-02, Water Break Test.

NOTE: To avoid contamination of the surface from dirt and oils on

your hands, clean gloves must be worn for the remainder of
the preparation.

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE CHEMICALS, READ, UNDERSTAND, AND OBEY ALL SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CHEMICALS. THESE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDE

EMPLOYER ON HOW YOU MUST SAFELY USE, KEEP, AND DISCARD
CHEMICALS.

(2) Apply Pasa Jell 105 to the bonding surfaces of the heat shield and
the thrust reverser cowl and let stand for 8-10 minutes.

(3) Flush with demineralized water and do a test with litmus paper to
make sure all contaminants are removed. The litmus paper should
show a neutral reading (pH 7).

(4) Dry at room temperature.

D. Apply sealant. (Refer to Figure 202.)

NOTE: If primer is required for alternate sealant, refer to

manufacturer’s instructions prior to sealant application.

(1) Apply RTV106 sealant, or equivalent, to the bond area on the thrust
reverser cowl and the heat shield as specified in Figure 202.

(2) Install the heat shield with the TLPD419BS rivets or CR3523-4
rivets.

E. Install clamps. (Refer to Figure 203.)

(1) Manufacture forming blocks to protect the heat shield during the
clamping procedure.

(2) Manufacture support blocks to protect the thrust reverser cowl

during the clamping procedure.

(3) Start at the center of the aft edge of the heat shield and thrust
reverser and install the clamps, support blocks and forming
blocks. The maximum inside allowable gap between the aft thrust
reverser cowl and the heat shield is 0.078 in. (2,0 mm).
