Strategy for Blitzkrieg

I t i s evident t h a t the strategy* of
BLITZKRIEG i s e s s e n t i a l l y dominated
by the funnel n a t u r e of the t e r r a i n with
wide end. T h i s r e s u l t s in a n advantage
f o r BLUE on defense with a c o r r e s p o n d -
ing disadvantage on offense a s he b e -
c o m e s s p r e a d thinner when advancing
c l o s e r to RED'S home t e r r i t o r y finding
few d e c i s i v e n a t u r a l s t r a t e g i c objec-
tives. RED, o n the o t h e r hand, i s a t
a n i m m e d i a t e disadvantage o n defense
due to the wide f r o n t he i s defending,
but h a s the advantage o n the a t t a c k a s
he gains ground, finding s u c c e s s i v e
d e c i s i v e n a t u r a l s t r a t e g i c objectives
with p r o g r e s s i v e l y l e s s f r o n t to c o v e r .
Both s i d e s thus have t h e i r own t a c t i -
c a l "slant1'. BLUE t e n d s t o have b e t t e r
i n t e r i o r l i n e s , but h a s the disadvantage
of c o n s t r i c t i o n of h i s supply l i n e s (only
t h r e e o v e r l a n d through the n o r t h i s t h -
m u s ) which m a k e interdiction and i s o l a -
tion a c o n s t a n t d a n g e r . RED h a s l e s s
c e n t r a l i z e d communications which a r e
l e s s s u b j e c t to interdiction and i s o l a -
tion considerations. BLUE'S m o s t
s t r a t e g i c a l l y i m p o r t a n t city i n the open-
ing game i s E E - 2 5 with p o r t BB-31 a
c l o s e second; J J - 3 8 a n d possibly NN-33
a r e R E D ' S i m m e d i a t e key objectives.
T h e s e c i t i e s should b e c a p t u r e d d u r i n g
the f i r s t turn. By p r o p e r u s e of a i r -
borne t r o o p s and s e a invasion, BLUE
c a n obtain a l m o s t a s many n e u t r a l c i t i e s
a s RED on h i s f i r s t turn.
Although i n the final a n a l y s i s B L I T Z -
KRIEG r e d u c e s t o w a r f a r e of a t t r i t i o n ,
the f r o n t a l a s s a u l t is r a r e l y a d e c i s i v e
t a c t i c i n t h i s g a m e , eventually giving
s o m e d e c i s i o n only between noticeably
unequal p l a y e r s . E a c h p l a y e r should
s e e k t o obtain the c o m m i t m e n t of h i s
e n e m y ' s f o r c e s and then a t t e m p t to
strike broad, decisive,
blows taking advantage of t h a t c o m m i t -
strategical
ment. A p l a y e r should avoid f r i t t e r i n g
away h i s a i r b o r n e and a i r c r a f t units i n
non-decisive actions. S e a invasions
a l s o should be u s e d with d i s c r e t i o n
s i n c e the t h r e a t of invasion is often
m o r e effective than the a c t u a l event.
S e a T r a n s p o r t a s well a s A i r T r a n s p o r t
when c o r r e c t l y taken advantage of c a n
provide unpredictable m o v e m e n t and
m a s s i n g . BLUE, like England, i s in a
b e t t e r position t o use the s e a than Red
who i s b a s i c a l l y a land power.

BLITZKRIEG i s a point d e f e n s e g a m e
a s opposed to a l i n e defense s u c h a s
found in D-DAY. A p l a y e r should be
conscious of the d a n g e r of a p o s s i b l e
advance of h i s opponent's u n i t s a s a
r e s u l t of battle a g a i n s t one unit cutting
off the r e t r e a t and isolating an a d j a c e n t
unit. Ideally speaking, the b e s t d e f e n s e
line would be a s e r i e s of units s e p a r -
a t e d by one s q u a r e (each unit a b l e to
be attacked only f r o m two s q u a r e s ) and
doubled by t e r r a i n f e a t u r e s with a unit
behind e a c h f r o n t line unit (not on a
mountain) in s u c h a position a s to block
advance f u r t h e r than a defeated unit's
f o r m e r square.
The offensive h a s the distinct ad-
vantage in BLITZKRIEG due to the
v a r i e t y of p o s s i b l e t a c t i c a l techniques.
The use of B r e a k t h r o u g h A r t i l l e r y ,
R a n g e r , A i r b o r n e , and Air A s s a u l t
Units along with T a c t i c a l a i r a t t a c k s t o
b r e a k r i v e r l i n e s and Strategic a i r a t -
t a c k t o c u t r e t r e a t and achieve a u t o -
m a t i c elimination. Troops m a y be
moved up a d j a c e n t to an enemy's p o s i -
tion ( s u c h a s a c i t y ) under S t r a t e g i c
a i r a t t a c k without having to engage t h e
units in the position, thus forcing t h e
t r o o p s i n the position to fight a t a d v e r s e
a d d s d u r i n g t h e i r turn. A r m o r i s e s -
pecially effective i n penitration a f t e r
a u t o m a t i c eliminations.
In the accompaning diagram, S t r a t e -
g i c a i r a t t a c k h a s been used to a u t o -
m a t i c a l l y e l i m i n a t e a BLUE 2-4 ( 1 12th

f i g h t e r action. A i r b o r n e Units a r e
then d r o p p e d to obtain a 511 and a 411
surrounded. A r m o r Units a r e t h e n
m o v e d through the automatic e l i m i n a -

THE GENERAL
The s u p e r i o r i t y of offense o v e r de-
f e n s e g i v e s an e x t r e m e i m p o r t a n c e t o
gaining the initiative. Once gained i t
should be constantly maintained: only
absolutely n e c e s s a r y slowdowns in your
attacks, never l e t up, continually switch
your weight around, keep your opponent
constantly reshuffling h i s f o r c e s . Keep-
ing your opponent off balance physical-
l y and mentally should be the key note
of your strategy.

'Short -tournament' Game

The
a f a s t e r game, c o n t a i n s a l l the s t a n d a r d
t o u r n a m e n t r u l e s with t h e s e exceptions:
1. All - land a t t a c k s a r e r e s o l v e d by
the basic r e s u l t s table.
2. A i r f o r c e u n i t s a r e not r e p l a c e -
able.
3. P a r a units (including a i r landing)
a r e replaceable Y & to the extent of
the available r e p l a c e m e n t c o u n t e r s ,
(15 f a c t o r s ) . T h e s e s a m e r e p l a c e m e n t
c o u n t e r s m a y a l s o b e brought in on
t h e i r own in addition to the s t a r t i n g
units, thus bringing the total possible
p a r a f a c t o r s u p to 33 f a c t o r s on the
board, o r off the board, by the 9th turn.
The l a r g e r and s m a l l e r p a r a units m a y
be interchanged anytime, but once
eliminated i n any m a n n e r , the unit i s
completely removed from play-
this r u l e allows m o r e p a r a units on the
board a t one t i m e than under game r u l e s

Using SAC t o h i t the n e a r e s t unit(s)
that could c o u n t e r attack. Also, a f t e r
resolving c o m b a t and r e c e i v i n g your
movement b o n u s e s , fan your u n i t s out
so that r e i n f o r c e m e n t s i n the way of
e n e m y p a r a units d o n ' t land in the
Blitz a r e a and c u t you off f r o m e i t h e r
advance, supply, o r mopping up.

t o provide a sound b a s i s f r o m which a
b e t t e r opening c a n be evolved. I have
found a t l e a s t 3 weak points i n t h i s a t -
t a c k which, a t p r e s e n t , I a m unable t o
r e m e d y . I hope one of you m o r e p e r -
ceptive " G e n e r a l s " can suggest a r e m -
edy. Operation Gulp c a n with a l i t t l e
luck, give you c o n t r o l of e v e r y city in
the two c o u n t r i e s i m m e d i a t e l y a d j a c e n t
to G r e a t Blue. Gulp h a s two meanings.

to G r e a t Blue and you c a n Gulp in
d i s m a y if your opponent t a k e s a p p r o p -

the Russians.
In Stalingrad, t h e s o u t h e r n s e c t o r
c a n b e a tough nut t o c r a c k f o r t h e G e r -
m a n s . T h e s e r i e s of r i v e r l i n e s c a n
r e a l l y slow t h e G e r m a n advance. E v e n
if t h e G e r m a n p l a y e r c o m m i t s strongly.
a n i r r e v o c a b l e c o m m i t t m e n t we m i g h t
add, t h e R u s s i a n p l a y e r c a n bottle h i m
u p f o r m a n y moons. T h e combination
of mountains a n d a well l a i d R u s s i a n
defensive a l i g n m e n t c a n m a k e i t nigh on
to impossible f o r the German player to
switch Units between t h e south a n d o t h e r
sectors once initial placement in the
south h a s b e e n m a d e .
But we will show now a m i n i m u m of
f o r c e s c a n a c c o m p l i s h a g r e a t deal.

In t h e e x a m p l e below we a r e a s s u m -
ing t h a t i t i s a b o u t t h e t h i r d t u r n of t h e
g a m e a n d s o m e l o s s e s o n both s i d e s
have been s u s t a i n e d , l e a v i n g t h e G e r -
m a n s f a i r l y weak i n t h e south. We show
a s m a l l a r e a of R u s s i a n Units doubled
up behind t h e D n e s t r R i v e r . A s tough
a defensive situation a s t h i s a p p e a r s ,
it would only t a k e a v i c t o r y a g a i n s t one
of t h e f o u r R u s s i a n Units t o b r e a k t h e
Dnestr line and force the Russians back
behind t h e i r l a s t r i v e r defense, t h e
Southern Bug. And once p a s t t h e South-
e r n Bug. .. well, t h e g i r l s i n Stalingrad
will just have t i m e t o put t h e i r l i p s t i c k
on.
To "guarantee" you'll b r e a k the
D n e s t r , t h e G e r m a n p l a y e r should con-
duct e a c h of the f o u r a t t a c k s in such a
m a n n e r that he will advance a f t e r c o m -
bat even when he l o s e s . A s t h e G e r -
man p l a y e r , you do t h i s s i m p l y by a t -
tacking a t 1 t o 1 ' s with one m o r e Unit
than you need. F o r i n s t a n c e , in the
18- 14 a t t a c k a g a i n s t the R u s s i a n 35th
t h e G e r m a n p l a y e r h a s a 50-50 chance
of advancing a f t e r combat. Only 14
f a c t o r s would be-removed o n a n exchange
thus t h e r e m a i n i n g 4-4-4 Unit would b e
allowed to advance. T h e s a m e a p p l i e s
i n the 18- 14 a t t a c k a g a i n s t t h e 37th a n d
16-12 a t t a c k a g a i n s t t h e 11th. T r u e
enough, t h e r e i s a 33% chance of l o s i n g
a l l attacking Units but you r e a l l y haven't

F i n a l l y , a 24- 12 a t t a c k a g a i n s t t h e

with only a 1 i n 6 chance of l o s i n g all
24 f a c t o r s . Mathematically speaking
t h e f o u r a t t a c k s provide a total of 24
r e s u l t s ; 4 a r e D-elim. 5 a r e exchanges
and 4 a r e D-back 2 ' s which m e a n s t h a t
13 of t h e 24 a r e i n t h e a t t a c k e r ' s f a v o r .
Putting i t a n o t h e r way, the law of prob-
a b i l i t y s a y s t h a t you will "win" 2 of t h e
4 battles.
Of p r i m e i m p o r t a n c e is t h e f a c t t h a t
you have i n c r e a s e d your c h a n c e s of
advancing a f t e r c o m b a t by 20%. T h i s
l a w a l s o s a y s t h a t you should l o s e 2970
of y o u r total f o r c e i n A - e l i m ' s . Add
t h i s t o t h e 2070 chance of l o s s e s through
exchanges a n d you should l o s e about 38
of your 76 f a c t o r s committed.

How to Exploit Russian
Errors in Stalingrad

1. H a s t h e R u s s i a n l e f t h o l e s in h i s
l i n e ? Can you go a r o u n d h i m r a t h e r
than through h i m ? If the a n s w e r i s y e s ,
you have probably won t h e game. Get
about half your u n i t s t h r o u g h the gap,
and send u n i t s t o c a p t u r e the t h r e e k e y
c i t i e s , Stalingrad. Moscow, a n d Lenin-
g r a d . Use the o t h e r s to s u r r o u n d a n d
e i t h e r a t t a c k o r i s o l a t e h i s units. How-
e v e r , you m u s t hold your own supply
l i n e s and p r e v e n t the R u s s i a n s f r o m
hindering the c a p t u r e of the key c i t i e s
b e f o r e you w o r r y about eliminating h i s
forces.
2. I s t h e R u s s i a n F i n n i s h f o r c e too
w e a k ? Tf he h a s l e s s than six units

ing Helsinki a l s o . Even if a n a t t a c k a t
3 t o one o d d s i s not p o s s i b l e i t i s always
profitable t o a t t a c k u n i t s a t I32 even a t
one t o two o d d s s i n c e r e t r e a t i s not
possible f o r Russians there. The other
d a n g e r confronting t h e R u s s i a n if he
p l a c e s too l i t t l e s t r e n g t h in Finland is
if you f o r t i f y Helsinkiwith the 6 R a r m o r
even a f t e r he h a s e a t e n through t h e d e -
laying F i n n s , h e will b e too weak t o get
t h e 3 t o 1 s u r r o u n d e d which a s s u r e s
t h e c a p t u r e of Helsinki. He will need
a t l e a s t 36 points--about 9 units.
3. In Poland, c a n you get l a r g e
n u m b e r s of one t o two's a g a i n s t t h e
Nemunas R i v e r l i n e ? If he h a s ne-
glected t o hold U18, g e n e r a l l y with a
2-3-6, t h e a n s w e r t o t h i s question is
YES. In five a t t a c k s a t one t o two you
have about two c h a n c e s i n t h r e e of
getting a D b a c k two, t h u s b r e a c h i n g
t h e r i v e r line. In f o u r a t t a c k s a t t h o s e
odds you have a 60% chance. T h i s
b r e a c h of t h e r i v e r l i n e is v e r y i m -
portant e a r l y i n t h e g a m e sirice t h e R u s -
s i a n c a n not r e p l a c e h i s 2-3-6's f o r
four turns and must either sacrifice
4-6-4's o r much territory. Onceacross
the Nemunas h e a d E a s t down the Minsk.
Smolensk h i s t o r i c invasion path. If i t
w a s good enough f o r Napoleon, i t ' s good
enough f o r you! Don't p a s s up a r e a l l y
good opportunity t o c r o s s the Divina
a n d / o r gobble up Leningrad, but delay
w o r k s much b e t t e r t h e r e i n the r e s t r i c t -
ed m o v e m e n t a r e a w e s t of the s w a m p s
and E a s t of R i g a . Not only that, you
can coordinate m u c h b e t t e r with your
s o u t h e r n a t t a c k t o c r o s s the Dnepr a t
s o m e weak point you will b e a b l e to
stretch in the Russian lines. Mass
your a r m o r h e r e , e s p e c i a l l y when
Minsk h a s fallen. If half of i t i s i n the
south a n d half of i t i s i n t h i s front--you
will only be a b l e t o d e s t r o y i t i n two to
one a t t a c k s .
4. H a s he given you s o m e way of
getting a t h r e e t o one--even if you have
to soak off with twenty f a c t o r s a t one
t o s i x - - w h i c h will l e a v e one of your
units with i t s zone of c o n t r o l on AA15
( B r e s t L i t o v s k ) o r BB15. If on the
f i r s t t u r n you c a n c a p t u r e t h i s vital
r a i l r o a d o r even deny h i m i t s u s e , you
can stop h i m f r o m r e i n f o r c i n g the a r e a
of your m a i n a t t a c k . He will have t o
go through Kiev a n d a r o u n d the P r i p y a t
M a r s h e s , which will t a k e a n e x t r a t u r n .
I c a n not s t r e s s t h e i m p o r t a n c e of t h i s
enough. Some "defenses" put s t a c k s
of u n i t s a t CC14 i n o r d e r t o u s e the San
R i v e r t o double u n i t s a t EE12. After

combat, when you have a unit o r two on
BB14 t h e R u s s i a n s will have t o c o u n t e r -
a t t a c k o r e l s e , e s p e c i a l l y if you have
c r o s s e d t h e Nemunas R i v e r , withdraw
units f r o m t h e f r o n t l i n e s i n t h e south
and have t h e m end t h e i r t u r n hope-
l e s s l y out of play, s o m e w h e r e s o u t h e a s t
of Minsk, i n o r d e r t o r e i n f o r c e on t h e
next t u r n .
5. If you a r e playing a R u s s i a n who
holds EE12 with a 2-3-6 a n d then puts
a unit a t F F l Z t o d e l a y f o r y e t a n o t h e r
turn, you c a n u s e the San R i v e r t o a l -
low you t o move onto EE12. A t t a c k a t
3. 5 o r p e r h a p s 7 t o one f r o m DD12 a n d
E E l l and (if n e c e s s a r y ) r e t r e a t t h e
2-3-6 t o GG11. Move onto t h e v a c a t e d
s q u a r e . T h e unit i s now t r a p p e d e v e n
if you did not s u c c e e d i n eliminating
him, a n d u n l e s s t h e R u s s i a n i s c a r e f u l ,
you c a n u s e h i m t o put GG12 u n d e r y o u r
zone of control. A t t a c k the 2- 3-6 a n d
soak off a g a i n s t t h e u n i t s on GG12 f r o m
F F l Z and F F 1 3 . When your t u r n is
over, the Russian must counter-attack
f r o m GG12, o r , m o r e probably, r e t r e a t .
If your opponent puts a 4 - 6 - 4 a t E E 1 2
this s a m e plan c a n b e p u r s u e d , but a t
m o r e r i s k , a n d I d o not r e c o m m e n d i t
wholeheartedly.
6. Often i t i s worthwhile t o put
s o m e u n i t s a t MM8 a n d MM9 i n p r d e r
t o s u r r o u n d t h e u n i t s i n t h e mountains
a t G G l 2 and I112 i n conjunction with a t -
tacks f r o m m o r e normal approaches,
on the second a n d t h i r d t u r n s .
7. Do not d i s i p a t e y o u r s t r e n g t h i n
t h e South by one t o two a t t a c k s , u n l e s s
you can get a one t o two s u r r o u n d e d o n
say a 7-10-4 on NN14. T h i s a r e a
should b e held p r i m a r i l y a s a t h r e a t t o
f o r c e the R u s s i a n t o k e e p m a n y u n i t s
behind t h e r i v e r l i n e s which would
d e s t r o y you if you a t t e m p t t o a t t a c k a t
l e s s than t h r e e t o one v e r y often. T h e
best strategy i s to work southeast f r o m
Poland, killing the two u n i t s p e r t u r n
t h e R u s s i a n m u s t d e l a y with o n c e t h e
Bug is p i e r c e d . T h e o t h e r R u s s i a n
option is a n i m m e d i a t e r e t r e a t t o t h e
Dnepr, which is poor s t r a t e g y b e f o r e
t h e winter snows s t r i k e . V e r y l i t t l e
a r m o r should b e placed i n t h e South
initially. Fifty o r s o total a t t a c k f a c -
t o r s , twelve t o fifteen u n i t s of v a r i o u s
s t r e n g t h s , i s sufficient t o maintain a
r e s p e c t a b l e a n d r e s p e c t e d t h r e a t . Some
Roumanian infantry should b e stationed
h e r e , not s o m u c h f o r h i s t o r i c a l a c -
c u r a c y a s f o r holding t h e r i v e r - l i n e s
while t h e r e s t of your f o r c e s m a s s a t
one weak point t o c r o s s t h e n e x t r i v e r
if a good opportunity p r e s e n t s i t s e l f .
Never m o r e than one o r two 1 t o 2 b a t -
t l e s should b e fought i n t h i s a r e a , a t
l e a s t until communications through
Lwow have been opened up with t h e
m a i n body i n Poland. T r y t o avoid b e -
ing s u r r o u n d e d by R u s s i a n c o u n t e r -
a t t a c k s , a n d when t h i s is unavoidable,
have a m p l e r e s e r v e s to counter counter -
attack.
T o win the G e r m a n m u s t t a k e r i s k s
a t t i m e s , a t t a c k a t two t o one a n d w o r s e
odds, but d o t h i s only when defeat will
not m e a n d i s a s t e r , and v i c t o r y will h u r t
t h e R u s s i a n s considerably. C h a n c e s
c a n b e profitably t a k e n t o c a p t u r e Minsk,
B r e s t Litovsk. Kieve, Smolensk, Dnepro
P e t r o v s k , Riga, and of c o u r s e the t h r e e
c i t i e s t h a t will win t h e g a m e f o r you:
Moscow, Leningrad, a n d Stalingrad. I
suggest t h a t s t r a t e g i c a l l y your b e s t b e t
i s t o d r i v e o n Moscow since, when you
win, one of the two r e m a i n i n g c i t i e s
will d r o p into your lap. You will have
i n t e r i o r l i n e s a n d c a n s t r i k e with t h e
bull of y o u r f o r c e s a t e i t h e r L e n i n g r a d
o r Stalingrad, while t h e c a p t u r e of e i t h e r
of t h e s e two allow t h e R u s s i a n t o r e -
g r o u p and f o r m a l i n e t h a t p r o t e c t s both
of t h e r e m a i n i n g c i t i e s . E i t h e r s a v e
your r e p l a c e m e n t s f o r r e p l a c i n g y o u r

Answer: No. Aircraft based in a city cannot
exceed that city's current supply capacity.

Answer: Yes, however i f during the battle
portion of the turn enemy Fighters reduce
the odds below automatic victory conditions,

s i b l e Allied air s t r i k e . Your Bulge a i r
s t r i k e s c a n b e e x t r e m e l y i m p o r t a n t if
t h e y ' r e judiciously u s e d (I t r y t o u s e
s m a l l , but effective, b u r s t s s o a s t o
s p r e a d t h e p r i v i l e g e of being s t r u c k
a m o n g s t m o r e G e r m a n units. )
7 ) In D-Day a n d Waterloo, don't
h e s i t a t e t o u s e f a s t u n i t s of s m a l l f a c -
t o r s a s delay units. F o r instance. I
initially u s e a P r u s s i a n h e a d q u a r t e r s
s c r e e n t o d e l a y t h e F r e n c h a n d t o give
m e e x t r a t i m e i n which t o m a n e u v e r
u n i t s into positions i n f r o n t of t h e m a i n

8) A f t e r you have a s t r o n g p r i m a r y
line, t r y to formulate a secondary line
a s q u a r e o r two behind t h e front. It
d o e s n ' t have t o b e a solid l i n e a s long
as i t p r o t e c t s t h e r e a r of your f r o n t
a n d i t c a n b e brought u p t o full s t r e n g t h
d u r i n g r e t r e a t f r o m t h e p r i m a r y line.
9 ) Don't h e s i t a t e t o m a k e limite'd
offensives when e n e m y s t r e n g t h won't
threaten such operations against units
who a r e m o m e n t a r i l y outnumbered.
A s y o u r opponent's s u p e r i o r i t y is fin-
a l l y vanishing - a n d i t will a s h e s m a s h e s
himself a g a i n s t your i n c r e a s i n g l y solid
l i n e s - i t i s a d v i s a b l e t o s t e p up y o u r
offensives, eventually taking t h e initia-
t i v e completely.
T o wind up, l e t m e i n j e c t my opinions
into a few a r g u m e n t s . B e s i d e s what
h a s b e e n previously s t a t e d concerning
Waterloo. I initially p l a c e t h e P r u s s i a n
cavalry and a mediocre secondary line
behind Tilly, t h e r e s t of t h e P r u s s i a n s
a r e l e f t t o defend Q u a r t r e B r a s a n d t o
a c t a s a s m a l l r e s e r v e . A s the F r e n c h
a p p r o a c h T i l l y , I t r y t o keep m y c a v a l r y
intact - I sacrifice them l a t e r in num-
e r o u s delaying s c r e e n s . In D-Day I
s e t up a n a d v e r s e - o d d s c o a s t a l d e f e n s e
through t h e L e H a v r e a r e a a n d p l a c e a n
a n t i - p a r a t r o o p s c r e e n of f a s t - m o v i n g
s t r e n g t h a few s q u a r e s inland. T h e
m a i n p o r t i o n s of t h e G e r m a n s t r e n g t h
i s l o c a t e d between P a r i s and St. Lo.
A c r o s s the n e c k of B r i t t a n y and t h e
n a r r o w s i n South F r a n c e , I place head-
q u a r t e r s c r e e n s . T h e b e s t chance t h e

h a s m a d e a g r e a t many h i s t o r i c a l and
operational e r r o r s . If and when A . H.
c o m e s out with a "tournament Stalin-
g r a d " , I believe they ought t o place
t h e s e changes in the r u l e s .

d i v i s i o n s a t Smolensk. At t h e beginning
of t h e w a r t h e Soviets had 34 A r m i e s .
They l o s t s o m e 22 of t h e s e in the en-
c i r c l e m e n t b a t t l e s up t o t h e middle of
O c t o b e r , not counting what they l o s t t o
f r o n t a l c o m b a t and o t h e r c a u s e s (two
divisions shot t h e i r c o m m i s a r s and
d e s e r t e d o u t r i g h t ) , but t h e West Point
A t l a s gives t h e m c r e d i t f o r s t i l l having

c a p t u r e b e f o r e t h e Soviets could move
i t off (they completed the job by the end
of '41), might have crippled t h e i r w a r
capacity.
It m u s t a l s o be noted t h a t the con-
ditions of v i c t o r y in any such tourna-
m e n t g a m e should b e changed. The
capture of Archangel, Murmask,
A s t r a k h a n o r tlie C d c a s u s would l i i r v ~
g r e a t e f f e c t s on the Soviets, even if the
t h r e e c i t i e s w e r e not captured. It would
by no m e a n s b r i n g t h e m down, but a

combination of two c i t i e s and t h r e e of
the o t h e r s might d e s t r o y the R u s s i a n
will to win.
