Community Extension Service Narrative Report

Fire hazards are conditions that favor a fire development or growth. Three
elements are required to start and sustain fire. Namely, the oxygen, fuel, and heat. Fire
hazards usually involve the mishandling of fuel or heat because oxygen is naturally
present in most Earth environments. The effects of fire include hazard to life and property,
atmospheric pollution, and water contamination. In response, we conduct fire safety which
are the set of practices intended to reduce the destruction caused by fire. Fire safety
measures include those that are intended to prevent ignition of an uncontrolled fire, and
those that are used to limit the development and effects of a fire after it starts.

On the first day of February 2020, St. Gregory and our very own section, St.
Augustine went to Barangay Mahay, Butuan City to conduct a Fire Safety and Prevention
symposium to the residents. The activity we conducted wasn’t only for our Community
Extension Service, but it was for our performance task in Disaster Readiness and Risk
Reduction as well. The program started at around 8:00 in the morning with an Opening
Prayer, singing of the National Anthem and an Introduction Message. This was followed
by an intermission number.

After that, we had the program proper where the residents are taught about Fire in
general, Types of Fire, Fire Safety Measures, and First Aid. They were also taught about
what to do when there is fire in these specific places: at school, home, and at the mall but
before that, the residents were entertained by another intermission number. We did not
have a hard time teaching the residents because they were very attentive and
participative

After the lectures, a resident was able to share an experience of hers where their
house caught fire and panicked. She said that now, she already knows what to do and
she was really thankful to us for that. It was also fulfilling for us as urians because we
were able to help them a lot through our own little ways. Fire could happen anytime and
their location was sadly vulnerable to fire, given that there were a lot of wooden materials
there. This lecture was really an advantage not only for them, but to us as well. We,
students, were able to learn more about Fire Hazards since the beginning of our
preparation until the day of the lecture. I learned that fire isn’t something that we should
not be giving attention to. It is very important to learn about it because it could really
happen anytime and if it does happen, your knowledge could save not only your precious
life, but others’ as well. The program ended with another intermission number, a closing
message, and a prayer. We were also able to depart going to school at around 11:30 in
the morning, just as expected.
