Science 8: Unit D Jolene Hehn

Lesson Duration: 46 mins April 3rd, 2019

Hydraulic Lab

Stage 1: Desired Results

General 3. Investigate and describe the transmission of force and energy between parts of a
Outcome(s) mechanical system
Specific STS-K: 3.6: describe how hydraulic pressure can be used to create a mechanical advantage in a
Outcome(s) simple hydraulic jack
Learning Students will:
Objectives - use their understanding of mechanical advantage to find the force being output by 3
separate hydraulic systems
- use their knowledge regarding area of a circle to find the area of a piston (syringe) in a
hydraulic system
Student Understanding(s): Essential Question(s):
Students will understand the mechanical advantage of N/A
hydraulics
Students will understand the movement of force
between pistons
Students will understand the process of calculating
pressure, finding missing values, and area
Adaptations:
N/A: the activities are applicable for students with modifications and adaptations because of the hands-on
work. (TQS #4)

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative Discussion: this will be done as Summative N/A
Assessment students are gathering Assessment
information and calculating
values (TQS #3)
Lab Assignment: this will be
collected and reviewed to
ensure student understanding

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to Resources to Syringes with tubing (3 systems)
Lesson: Bring: Tape
Lab Assignments
Chalk for lab
Time: Content/Description Notes/Materials
Introduction:
Remind students that we have been working on understanding
hydraulics and finding missing values.

5 minutes Once students have settled and remember where we are going
students will quietly listen to instructions on the lab process and
expectations.
Body:
Activity #1:
Students will use a tape measure to find the circumference of both
syringes
Science 8: Unit D Jolene Hehn
Lesson Duration: 46 mins April 3rd, 2019

Students will use the circumference to find the area of each syringe at 10 minutes per
the stations. station
Students will work with and make two observations at each station.
Once students have calculated the area they will be provided with the
input force to find the output force for each of the three syringes.

2 Large Small

3 small Small

**check for understanding consistently**

Activity #2:
Students will be given time after they have completed all stations to
complete calculations the focus should be on them receiving the
information and making observations from the hands of portion.

5 min Conclusion: If students are
