Question 2

Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).

I have always been fascinated by my uncle, Osman, who is a veterinarian.

Compared to his brothers and sisters who are small and tall, he is rather well-built and

short. My uncle has been nursing and taking care of animals for a total of 20 years.

He served as the Head Veterinarian at the National Zoo during the last five years of

his service.
He had never imagined working with animals because when he was young, he

was afraid of them, particularly lizards. He once owned a parrot but it died after a few

months under his care.

His love for animals grew when he had to work as a zoo cleaner before furthering

his studies. Until now, he sometimes helps the local authorities rescue stray animals.

In 2016, his outstanding services had earned him the Best Veterinarian Award.

I am very proud of his contribution to the society.

In his profession, one has to be compassionate in dealing with pet owners and

their sick animals. He is lucky to have a hardworking team that helps him look after the

animals at any time of the day. The hardest part of his job is when he has to work long

hours, which is something not many people can do. On top of that, he put himself at risk

when he sometimes has to deal with dangerous animals. He is a great role model and he

inspires me in many ways.

Question 4
Read the text below.

MY SCHOOL GARDEN PROJECT

Three years ago, my school started a school garden project. Everyone

was excited and wanted to contribute to it. The district education officer visited
our school and gave us some seedlings to show his support. In addition, some
parents helped by donating gardening tools. Our principal launched the project
in January and by August that year, the garden was finally ready.
A school garden is usually situated near the science laboratory or beside
the canteen. However, ours is behind the school hall because we need a larger
area. There are four sections in the garden and the biggest is for fruit trees.
Initially, rambutan and mangosteen trees were among the popular options to
be planted. After some discussion, the principal decided that papaya and guava
trees were more suitable. Whenever the trees produce fruits, some students will
offer to pick them even though it is the duty of the school gardener. The fruits will
be served at the school canteen for everyone.
The other sections of the garden are planted with colourful flowering plants
like roses and orchids as well as vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers and
long beans. Sometimes teachers will pluck the flowers and use them to decorate
the meeting rooms. The vegetables, on the other hand, are in high demand
among the school staff because pesticide is not used. By selling the vegetables,
the school is able to buy more fertilisers and seedlings for the garden.
Above all, what makes our school garden unique is that it has a study
area where teachers and students prefer having their lessons. A school garden
brings many benefits to everyone and all schools should consider having
one too.

News Break

Now why so loving, darling,

And why the sudden kiss?
You’d help me with some little jobs?
For goodness sake, what’s this?

Your face is clean for once, dear.

Your clothes without a crease.
You saved your luncheon money?
Will wonders never cease?

No dropping of your school books,

No shrieking, childish treble.
Today you are a lamb, love,
Where yesterday a rebel.

But surely you’re some stranger,

No rage or hullabaloo.
Come closer, let me look, dear,
Can this be REALLY you?

Now were you struck by lightning

Or were you stunned at sport?
Ah … now I see the reason.
You’ve brought your school report!

Mark Scheme for Section D

[40 marks]

Assessment Objectives
This part assesses student’s ability to:
• write a letter based on the given notes using correct and appropriate language.
• add more information, opinions and elaborate ideas.
• write using coherent and cohesive structures to convey meaning effectively.
• write an appropriate response based on a novel that they have read.

A How writing is assessed

In the assessment of writing skills at the lower secondary school level, students are
assessed on their ability to demonstrate the following skills in their written responses:
• reading skills in understanding the rubric and fulfilling the requirements of the
writing task.
• thinking skills to reflect depth and maturity of thinking by giving ideas, reasons
and supporting them with appropriate elaborations.
• language skills in terms of using language appropriately to provide the correct
tone, form and content as required by the task.

The emphasis is on how well the response fulfils the set task and the level of
language used. Accuracy of language in terms of grammar, sentence structures and
mechanics of writing is essential for effective communication. The examiner must be
able to understand and follow the presentation of ideas or events conveyed in the
students’ responses. Creativity is important but should not be the sole criterion in the
assessment of writing.

B What is expected of a student

A student must at least be able to:
• identify the requirements of the task.
• provide the appropriate content according to the task specified.
• use an appropriate format.
• give evidence / reasons to support given response (novel).
• use correct grammar, sentence structures and mechanics of writing.
• use paragraphs to organise ideas.
• elaborate and develop ideas e.g. by adding details, giving reasons or examples
to make responses more interesting.

Note:
• Award ‘0’ mark when there is:
- no response or response written in language other than English; or
- mindless lifting of irrelevant chunks from other sources including rubric.
• When awarding marks, apply the ‘best fit’ principle. No script will fit neatly into
any one of the bands. To determine the appropriate mark, identify the band the
response belongs to and refer to the criteria in the band. Examiners should assess
the script holistically and always refer to the coordinated scripts for consistency.
• The length of the response should not be a criterion in awarding marks.
Award marks based on the quality and relevance of the response.
