AMU, Aligarh (2018-19)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMU Students’ Union (2018-19) strongly condemns the false statements made by M Yogi Adatynath,
the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in the State Assembly today accusing AMU students of hitting the
roads in large numbers to burn the Aligarh City on 15th December 2019. His statement that the students
of AMU used stones, petrol bombs and weapons against Police is absolute falsehood and contrary to the
truth. He is trying to cover up the state terror committed against the students of AMU on the 15
December. Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Govind Mathur after seeing the photographs of the clash
between Aligarh Muslim University students and the police on the intervening night of December 15-16
has already said that the police had made a war-like situation. AMU Students’ Union demands
immediate resignation of UP CM M Yogi Adatynath as his presence in the Office is a great hurdle in the
deliverance of justice. We ask the President of India to take notice of his false claims and seek his
removal.

AMU Students’ Union rejects his allegations and makes it clear that no attempt to obfuscate the facts by
the state administration will change the reality. The truth remains that AMU Students were protesting
peacefully in the campus since 08 December against CAA NRC NPR and on the 15th December, a
peaceful march was held to condemn the excessive use of force at Jamia Millia Islamia. UP police and
other armed state forces were present in massive numbers at the University gates, and were ready with
ammunition. Police entered the university campus and attacked the students like criminals. Police was
all prepared and motivated for violence. They were determined to crush the campus movement against
the new citizenship law and inflict the maximum pain on students. In complete violation of standard
manual, police used pistols, rifles, stun grenades, single way grenades, chilli shells, plastic pallets,
rubber bullets and other weapons against students as mentioned in their own FIRs. Police used
disproportionate force against students and over 100 students were taken to JN Medical College and
Hospital. There were bleeding, and had injuries in different parts of the body. Not only students,
ambulance drivers, medical professionals, AMU employees and many of the AMU gate keepers were
ruthlessly beaten by police. Ambulances were stopped and broken. One ICU ambulance was broken by
five police men. More than 30 students were illegally detained including juveniles. In Room No. 46 of
Morison Court, Aftab Hostel, police fired two tear shells and a sound shell into the room that led to the
fire in the room. The insiders were forced to come out and were mercilessly beaten. Police broke the
door of a toilet where nine students were hiding from the police. Students were beaten with rods and gun
butts. They were abused and scolded. They were asked to go to Pakistan and stay away from the protests
against the new citizenship act (the crux of police aggression in AMU). They were taunted as anti-
nationals. Students revealed that the language of the police was so abusive that it cannot be made public.
Police also went deep into the campus, broke the bikes and stole the mobile phones. They damaged the
university property. Besides, physical violence, police was specific in verbal violence. They forced
students to recite Jai Sri Ram, and other Hindu slogans. The used the words like Pakistani, Desh Drohi,
Sala, Maa...., aatankawadi and others specifically to students both during torture in campus and in
hospital and during detention. The UP Police/RAF acted like criminals and terrorized whosoever came
their way.

AMU Students’ Union asks the Judiciary to take serious note of his statement that if people come to die
they not get a life, signally more state sponsored violence against anti-CAA protestors. The judiciary
must intervene to save the lives of citizens and their right to protest.
