Frontonasal prominence

-upper 1/3 of face

-forehead, dorsum of nose, alae of nose, philtrum of upper lip, primary palate, nasal septum

Maxillary prominence

-middle 1/3 of face

-most of upper lip, maxilla, upper cheeks, secondary palate

Mandibular prominence

-lower 1/3 of face

- chin, mandible, lower lip and lower cheek

Intermaxillary segment

labial component that forms the philtrum of the upper lip and the premaxilla

Formation of anterior 2/3 of tongue

-PA 1
- median swelling (median tongue bud) and lateral swellings (dorsal tongue budes) merge
together to form body/ oral part of the tongue
-epi comes from ectoderm
-trigeniminar nerve CN5 will provide sensory information (all of PA 1)

Formation of posterior 1/3 of tongue

-PA 3
- one swelling (capula) overgrows arch 2 to from a base
-epi comes from endoderm
-glossopharyngeal nerve


a separation or division of parts of the lip/ roof of the mouth that occurs early in development of

Cleft lip

all parts of the lip are present but fail to merge or fuse in a normal way
