HR CONCLAVE

There is a question that looms large – That are our systems future proof? The clear answer is ‘No’.
With inventions like those sponsored by ‘Artificial Intelligence’, the future of work looks
diametrically different from what employees may be used to. Our systems need to be able to absorb
and incorporate the new ways of working, new modes of work structures and embed these
seamlessly. AI offers unique advantage of augmenting judgement and intuition, up and down the
hierarchy, with algorithm’s recommendations that empower decision making, giving better
answers that humans or machines by themselves may not be able to achieve. While AI is riding on
a high bubble, the next new breakthrough marking future workplace too will require a mindset to
adapt, assimilate and transform. As per current Harvard Business Review estimates, AI is set to
add $ 13 trillion to the global economy over the next decade. Running parallel is the corollary of
underlying changes to nature of work, with the new age work heavily dependent on AI and AI
tools.
Like it or not, the future of work heavily impinges on Technology, which after initial glitches
becomes increasingly affordable, as with case of development platforms, processing power, data
storage limits etc. that powered AI and were initially out of bounds. With such proliferation, as
also the ease of access, time seems ripe for companies to capitalize on AI. To say the least the
future of work calls for investment in data infrastructure, AI software tools, data expertise, model
development and equally important is the need for cultural transformation for easy assimilation
and adaptation at the workplace. It is seen that AI initiatives face formidable cultural and
organizational barriers, and thus the need for leaders to proactively preempt the negative wave,
with active use of employee centric softer tools such as innovation, engagement etc. Interestingly,
even the advanced technologies rely on the old mantras of collaboration, teamwork, to be able to
survive, and play the full pitch, thus reinforcing need for well integrated human infrastructure,
exhibiting traits of citizenship etc.
A worthy lesson for future of work technologies is the inability of even the best of tools to deliver results
that are impeccable, in the very first run. It is the test-and-learn mentality of reframing mistakes as
sources of discoveries, that will catapult the new age organisations to becoming advanced. An important
aspect we confront today is that the old economy organisations that aren’t born digital, traditional
mindsets and ways of working run counter to those needed for AI. Equally important is the need to
dismantle the siloed processes style, when transforming workplace using new age systems. The
technology of the day informing the workplace is as transient as the fashion of the day, while some stay
and some fade off. However, Organisations need not focus only on the quick wins, or the new systems as
some badges of honour, they should develop a portfolio of initiatives with different time horizons, thus
ensuirng continuous and planned making of the new age workplace. While technology is just an enabler,
with the correct readiness index, HR leaders can leverage the change to enable a culture of innovation.
Going digital and embracing innovation, done efficiently, would work to enhance human performance of
organisations
