FORGED IN FIRE.

TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF BOLIVAR

1. The anvil is a metal material than a normally wrought iron material that is used to forge
metals. The curious thing about this tool is that the material with which it is made is good
for the performance of the work, because it transfers the energy of the blow sufficiently and
is also hard and resistant enough to withstand the strong blows.

2. The material to be used is a metal that has a high carbon content so that the knife to be
made, I think that what is sought with this is to make the knife harder, increase the retention
of the knife's edge, the wear resistance among others. Because it has a high carbon content,
that is, it can range from 0.6% to 1.6%.

3. For the creation of the material (Gobi poplar knife) it was necessary to perform a hot
work of the metal at a certain temperature so that it is then forged.

4. Forging is the process performed above the crystallization temperature, in this process
the material is molded or deformed to the desired shape by applying a compression force,
giving it the required lengths. The plastic deformation in this process is hot.

5. After the slab, the heat treatment (tempering) is carried out, in this procedure the internal
structure of the steel varies and this seeks to achieve greater hardness or flexibility.

6. If the temperature is not even along the entire leaf, cases may occur where the hardness
is greater in some areas. Nor is it good to dip the blade several times.

7. In these processes it can happen that the sheet is deslamine, that is to say that the steel is
divided into two or more layers, when this happens the metal is reheated and forged again.

8. Materials are subjected to hardness tests to determine how resistant the materials are to
be scratched or penetrated. This property is very marked by the heat treatment that the
material previously received.

9. When you want to correct some property of the material, but you do not want to modify
the tempering of a certain part of the material, that part is placed in water so that the heat
that is applied to the other part of the material does not affect the hardness in that zone.
10. For the handle of the knife Micarta is more ideal compared to wood if resistance is
spoken. Micarta has better properties than wood.

11. If the knife is very light, it will have a lower inertia response at the time of the cut, this
causes the cut to be smaller, but it drills very well. On the other hand, the knives are
sharpened so that the edge is thinner and the contact area is reduced.
