ABSTRACT

Calamities such as flooding is very common these days, it happens unexpectedly due to
climate change, global warming, illegal logging and improper disposal of wastes. During flooding,
Electricity and water sources are destroyed, these times we can hardly find safe, potable drinking
water .
In response to this situation, the researchers decided to create a simple Water Filter, which
includes Malunggay Seeds (Moringa Oleifera ) as water purifier.
Malunggay Seeds (Moringa Oleifera ) is known for its many benefits, it is not only used as
food but also for medicinal purposes.
In this study, the researchers tried to test the effectivity of Malunggay Seeds (Moringa
Oleifera ) as water purifier which can be obtained in our backyard.

INTRODUCTION

Water is essential to human beings, it is used for several purposes, such as cleaning,
watering the plants and human consumption. But the level of purity of the water being consumed
is very crucial since it has direct effect on our health. Many had died due to water borne diseases
especially during calamities where there is scarcity of drinking water.
According to research, the ideal TDS for a safe drinking water is below 300mg/L and the
max permissible limit is 500mg/L or Parts per Million (ppm). TDS stands for total dissolved solids,
and represents the total concentration of dissolved substances in water. Common inorganic salts
that can be found in water include calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, which are all
cations, and carbonates, nitrates, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulfates, which are all anions.

Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) is a very well-known plant not only as food but for its
health benefits. It is very rich in antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds. Its trees grows
abundantly all throughout many tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The tree can easily
grow in our backyards. The seedpods, seeds, leaves, roots and flowers are all edible and nutritious.
Some uses its leaves and pith to cure wounds. In addition to these benefits, something in the seeds
has the ability to kill bacteria and clarify water.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In 2009, students from Ghana conducted an experiment using Malunggay (Moringa
Oleifera) and Aluminum Sulphate (Alum) as water coagulant. They used water from the pond as
a control. In their study they found out that Moringa Oleifera lessens the turbidity, conductivity
and coliform from their water sample from unacceptable to acceptable values. Thus, they highly
recommend the use of Malunggay Seeds (Moringa Oleifera) for water treatment.

OBJECTIVE:

To make simple water filter that contains Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) seeds, which can
purify water especially in times of calamities.

HYPOTHESIS:

HO: Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) seeds is not effective in purifying water.

HA: Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) seeds is effective in purifying water.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Main Problem:
To test if Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) seeds is effective in purifying water.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
Only the whitish kernel of the Malunggay Seeds (Moringa Oleifera) is used. The Water
tester used (TDS3) tests only for the conductivity of the water sample and not for Coliform test.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) is a plant that has been praised for so its health benefits for
thousand of years. It is very rich in antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds. Its trees grow
abundantly all throughout many tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
The main ingredient used from Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) is the whitish kernel from its seeds.
METHODOLOGY
A. Materials Used
Malunggay Seeds Cotton

Empty 1.5 Bottle (Cut) Mortar and Pestle

Containers (glass) water sample

spoon Water Tester (TDS

Sand and small Gravel

B. General Procedure

1. Gather all materials in conducting the experiment

2. Wash your hands properly.
3. Place a hole on the cap of the bottle.
4. Wash the empty bottle, cap, containers and spoon thoroughly.
5. Wash the sand and gravel thoroughly and place it in a clean container.
6. Peel the husk of the Malunggay seeds leaving the whitish kernel.

7. Crush the Malunggay kernel using the Mortar and Pestle. Set aside in a clean container.

8. Assemble your water filter. Turn the bottle upside down. Put it on top of a clean container
or glass. Place enough amount of cotton to cover the rim of the bottle. Replace the cap.
Carefully place the crushed Malunggay seeds inside the bottle, followed by the Fine Sand
and the gravel on top.

9. Get your water sample.Take note of the turbidity of the water sample.
10. Measure the Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) of the water sample with the use of the water
tester (TDS3).
11. Carefully pour the water sample into the water filter, allowing it to flow until all its content
is transferred to the clean container.
12. Notice the turbidity of the water.
13. Measure again the Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) of the water sample with the use of the
water tester (TDS3).

Results and findings

Before After

Turbidity

Conductivity (TDS) in
ppm
Parts per Million

368 ppm 242 ppm

The researchers found out that the turbidity of the water sample is lessened, and the
conductivity of the water is also lessened.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Water borne disease are most common during disasters such as flooding. In response to
this we constructed a water filter which is natural, affordable, readily available, effective and safe
to use.
We, researchers conclude that Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) seeds is effective in
purifying water.
RECOMMENDATIONS

The researchers recommend that Malunggay ( Moringa Oleifera) seeds should be used in
further studies in purifying water. It is also suggested that Malunggay ( Moringa Oleifera) seeds
should be powdered well. And that the water sample should be tested for other test such as
coliform test in a proper laboratory.
