Using Microsoft Expression Studio on the 
Mac 
Expression Studio 2 and the Mac 
Users running Mac OS® X on Apple® computers using Intel® processors can install Microsoft Expression® 
Studio using one of the following methods, both of which enable you to work in the Windows 
environment: 

• Install a Windows virtualization software solution such as Parallels Desktop® for Mac. If you have the 
Microsoft Expression Professional Subscription package, Parallels Desktop is included with it.  
• Install the Apple Boot Camp® utility, which is included with your Mac. If you don’t have the 
subscription package, this is your most convenient option since Boot Camp is included with your 
Mac.  
 
Note: You can also choose to purchase any one of a number of software packages that provide 
virtualization capabilities if you don’t have the subscription package and you want to run both the 
Mac and Windows operating systems concurrently (Boot Camp does not support running the 
operating systems concurrently). 
 
This document will instruct you on the steps you need to take to install Expression Studio on your 
Mac regardless of your status as an owner of the Microsoft Expression Professional Subscription. 

Preparing to install Expression Studio  
Before you install Expression Studio, you need to prepare your Windows environment. To do this, follow 
the directions in the section below that corresponds to your status as an Expression Profession 
Subscription user. 

If you have the Expression Professional Subscription package 
The Expression Professional Subscription package provides a total solution for designers to create 
engaging user experiences on Microsoft operating systems with the latest versions of the tools they 
need. Included with this subscription, in addition to Expression Studio, are all the applications necessary 
for running Expression Studio on the Mac. Your physical subscription package includes Windows Vista® 
and you can download Parallels Desktop from your online subscription portal. Refer to your subscription 
literature for information about accessing your subscription and for detailed descriptions of the 
available software. 

 
Note: Alternatively, you may use the Boot Camp utility that comes with the Mac operating system to 
install Windows on your Mac. For information about installing and using Boot Camp, see Installing Boot 
Camp and Windows on page 5. 

The process for preparing to install Expression Studio on the Mac includes the following steps: 

1. Log on to your Expression Subscription portal page. 

2. Download Parallels Desktop. 

3. (Optional) Download your desired operating system. The Expression Professional Subscription 
package includes Windows Vista Business on disc. If you want Windows XP, you will need to 
download it from your subscription portal.  

4. Burn the downloaded Parallel Desktop .iso files to a disc, or copy them to a portable drive, for 
example, a thumb drive. 

5. Transfer the .iso file to your Mac. 

6. Install Parallels Desktop. 

7. Install your operating system. 

Downloading Parallels Desktop 
To obtain Parallels Desktop, you will need to log in to your subscription portal and download the file 
from a computer running Windows. You need Windows because the tool that facilitates the download, 
the Microsoft File Transfer Manager, runs only in a Windows environment. Without the services of the 
Microsoft Download Manager, you would be unable to download any component of the Expression 
Professional Subscription.  

To download Parallels Desktop from your subscription portal 

1. Log on to your Microsoft Expression Professional Subscription home page.  
2. On the home page, click the Downloads tab. 
3. In the left navigation pane, expand the Applications category and click Parallels Desktop. 
4. In the Downloads section of the page, click Keys, located just to the left of the Availability 
section. Write down or copy the product key that displays. You will need that key later to install 
Parallels desktop.  
5. In the Availability section, click Download. If you have already installed the Microsoft File 
Transfer Manager, the download will proceed. However, if you have not yet installed it, you may 
have to allow an ActiveX control to run in order to proceed with the download. Read the dialog 
box and follow the instructions to allow the ActiveX control to run. Once you allow the control 
to run, it will install the Microsoft File Transfer Manager.

 6. In the Confirm Transfer Request dialog box, click Browse to specify a folder for the download. 
 

 
 
7. Click Transfer. The Microsoft File Transfer Manager will display the progress of your download.  
 

 
 
Note: If you need to install another operating system besides Windows Vista Business, which is 
included on a disc with your subscription package, you need to repeat steps 3‐7. Instead of

 expanding the Applications category, however, as explained in Step 3, expand the Operating 
Systems category. Once you expand that category, locate the operating system that you want to 
install. Make sure that you install an operating system that is compatible with Expression Studio. 

Transferring the .iso file to your Mac 
The files that you download from your subscription portal will be .iso files. An .iso file is an archive of the 
data normally contained on a CD or DVD. In order to access the data in that archive, you will first need 
to either burn the .iso file onto disc or copy the .iso to an external, swappable storage device, such as a 
thumb drive. Then, on your Mac, you can launch the .iso file directly from the storage device. 

If you choose to burn a disc, make sure that the application that you use supports burning .iso files.  

Note: The Parallels Desktop .iso is approximately 119 MB. 

Installing Parallels Desktop and Windows 
Parallels Desktop is a Mac virtualization application that allows you to install and run Windows 
concurrently with the Mac operating system. When running Parallels Desktop, you can freely access 
Windows applications while you are working in the Mac operating system. When you run Windows 
applications, they open in a fully‐functional virtual Windows environment. 

To install Parallels Desktop and Windows, you should first read either of the Parallels Desktop for Mac 
installation guides included with the Parallels Desktop .dmg. 

To access the Parallels Desktop .dmg 

1. Insert either your disc or portable drive into your Mac and double‐click the .iso file. 
2. Double‐click the Parallels Desktop .dmg.  
3. Open either of the Parallels Desktop for Mac installation guides to read instructions on how to 
install the application. When you are ready to install Parallels Desktop, you can double‐click the 
install icon that is in the same location as the installation guides. 

If you do not have the Expression Professional Subscription package 
The Expression Professional Subscription package includes all the software that you need to install 
Expression Studio on your Mac. However, if you do not have the Expression Professional Subscription 
package, you can still install Expression Studio on the Mac. You will just need to purchase the Windows 
operating system as well as Expression Studio.  

You will first need to run the Apple Boot Camp utility, which is included in the Mac operating system, in 
order to prepare your hard drive for a Windows operating system installation. Then, you will just need 
to install Windows and Expression Studio.  

Refer to the Boot Camp documentation for more details on the Boot Camp features.

Installing Boot Camp and Windows 
Boot Camp allows you to install the Windows operating system on your Mac by guiding you through a 
partitioning of your hard disk drive, and then through a subsequent Windows installation. After you 
install Windows, you can set preferences that specify which operating system the computer will 
automatically boot into. Alternatively, at boot time, you can hold down the OPTION key and then 
manually choose which operating system to run. You cannot run the Mac operating system and 
Windows operating systems concurrently using Boot Camp. If running the operating systems 
concurrently is a feature that better suits your workflow, you will have to purchase Parallels Desktop. 

Boot Camp enables you to specify a partition size for your Windows installation. When creating new 
partitions, make sure that you create an ample partition for your basic Windows installation. Determine 
how much disk space to allocate for the Windows partition based on how many Windows applications 
you plan to use and how many files you would like to store on your Mac. At least 32 GB are 
recommended, but you can allocate as much available space as you need. For installation, Expression 
Studio requires at least 2 GB of available hard disk space.  

You will need the following DVDs to install Boot Camp and Windows: 

• The installation DVD for Mac operating system 10.5 or later. 
• The installation DVD for Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2. 

To use Boot Camp to partition your hard disk drive and install Windows 

• Please refer to your Mac documentation for complete, detailed information on how to install and 
configure both Boot Camp and Windows. 
 
Note:   If you decide that you need more disk space after you install Boot Camp and Windows, you 
will have to delete the partition and begin the process again. For more information, refer to the Boot 
Camp installation guide.  

Installing Expression Studio on the Mac 
Once you have installed Windows on your Mac, you can install Expression Studio.  

To install Expression Studio 

1. Start Windows, either by using Boot Camp or by opening your Windows virtual machine in 
Parallels Desktop. 
2. Do one of the following: 
• Insert your Expression Studio retail installation DVD and follow the installation 
instructions. 
• Open your browser, browse to your subscription, and download the Expression Studio 
installation files.

 3. Run the setup file and follow the installation instructions. 

When you are finished with the installation, you will be able to use Expression Studio on your Mac.
