COURSESTRUCTURE/SCHEDULE: 3 Theory Lectures/week
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To introduce specific concepts of mathematics where these can be applied in any technological job with
efficient manner. These basic concepts are complex number with representation, hyperbolic and inverse
hyperbolic functions, Algebra of Vectors and Matrices. [CO-1]

2. To give comprehensive knowledge about Derivatives and Integration and their relative detailed topics that can
solve major real technological problems. Also the concept of polar and cartesian coordinates, polar curves,
curvatures and different types of cycloids will be covered in this objectives. [CO-2]

3. To improve communication skills & team work through group discussion, analysis & investigation, case-study,
research and presentation of course relevant advanced topics in Applied Mathematics. [CO-3]

COURSE OUTLINES in HEC for B-TECH 4 Year Curriculum (Revised 2010):


Complex numbers, Argand diagram, De Moivre‟s theorem, hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic functions. Algebra of
vectors and matrices, systems of linear equations. Derivative as slope, as rate of change (graphical representation).
Extreme values, tangents and normals, curvature and radius of curvature. Differentiation as approximation. Partial
derivatives and their application to extreme values and approximation. Integration by substitution and by parts,
integration and definite integration as area under curve (graphical representation). Reduction formulae. Double
integration and its applications. Polar and Cartesian coordinates, polar curves, radius of curvature, cycloid,
hypocycloid, epicycloids and involutes of a circle.

After the completion of the course, the students will be able
