CHAPTER II: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the procedure in the conduct of the study which contains

ample description of the research design, locale of the study, sources of data,

data gathering procedure and statistical tools.

2.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

This study utilized the descriptive method and used the quantitative research

design. It is descriptive quantitative type of research because it sought to identify

and describe the popularity and uses of Social Networking site’s among Senior

High School Students in ZCSPC. As a survey research, this study utilized survey

questionnaire as it evaluates the responses of the respondents.

The purpose of this descriptive/associational study was to evaluate the

Popularity and Uses of Social Networking sites.

2.2 LOCALE OF THE STUDY

This study was conducted at Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College

Senior High School.

2.3 POPULATION AND SAMPLING DESIGN

The study population consist of the Senior High School Students of

Zamboanga City State Polytechnic Colleges enrolled during the School Year

2019-2020. There are 782 enrolled students to which 415 are male and 367

female.
7

In this study, using the Necessary Sample Size=

(𝑧−𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒)2̇(𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛(1−𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛)
(𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑟)2̇
, introduce by smith (2013) at a 95% confidence level

with 0.5 standard deviation, and a margin of error (confidence interval) of +/- 5%, thus:

Necessary sample size = 738 respondents are supposed to be needed

Further calculation using the Modified Cochran Formula:

𝑛0𝑁
Modified Cochran Formula (n)=
𝑛0 +(𝑁−1)

(385)(782)
Sample size= = 258.2 = 258 respondents are needed
385+(782−1

Thus, this study had employed 258 Senior High School Students.

Table 1

Demographic Profile of the Respondent

Profile

12-Gas 117 15

12-TVL 348 49.1

total 782 100

8

The table shows that among the 782 respondents, 415 are male and 367 are female. About

28.6% of the respondents are from Grade 11 and 71.4% from Grade 12. And about 4.6% of the

respondent are from 11-Stem, 4.9% are from 11-Gas, 19.2% are from 11-TVL, 11.9% are from 12-

Stem, 15% are from 12-Gas, and 49.1% from 12-TVL.

Stratified random sampling was used in the selection of Students who participate by filling in the

questionnaire. This technique to ensure that obtain sufficient sample points in the population will be

well-represented in the sample size.

2.4 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Use of a questionnaire survey instrument is the most appropriate method of

data collection for the study. Requesting uniform data from respondent, this

methodology facilitates comparative statistical analysis. Stratified random

sampling was made and appropriate number of samples for each grade level

and gender were given the questionnaire following the administration procedure

being laid down in this study. The questionnaire was collected swiftly and

carefully.

2.5 RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY

The research instrument is an adopted questionnaire from a study conducted

in India. The content validity and reliability of the questionnaire was examined by

the experts (educationists).

In quantitative research, reliability consistency of measurement, or degree to

which an instrument measures the same way. This study use of reliability type is

internal consistency. It estimates reliability by group question in the

questionnaire that measures the same concept.

9

Validity explains how well the collected data covers the area of investigation.

This study used content validity to which the question on the instruments and the

score from these represent all possible question that could be ask based on the

content or skill. It ensures that the questionnaire includes the adequate set of

items that tap concept. With this type of validity, the researcher will be assured

with the consistency of the measure with the objective of the study.

2.6 ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

This study required the participation of human respondent, particularly

students. With this, certain ethical issues were taken into consideration. The

consideration of these ethical issues was necessary to ensure the privacy of the

respondent. Among the significant ethical issue were considered in the research

process include consent and confidentially. A letter of permission was sent to the

principal of ZCSPC Senior High school department in order to secure the

consent. When the permission was granted, the researcher relayed the

important details which include the purpose and the significance of the study to

the respondent.

2.7 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

This study followed a structured questionnaire method. The questionnaire

consists of different section. The questions in all selections regarding the

Popularity and uses of Social Networking Site’s among the respondent.

The Popularity sub-scale which assesses the frequently used of SNS’s does

include 1 item. The Uses SNS’s scale includes 18 items which aims to assess
10

the uses of SNS’s of the students. Intensity usage (5 items) active participation

(3 items), various application (6 items) predominantly use (3 items).

All the items in the scale contained both open ended and close ended

question that answer the appropriate question on it.

2.8 STATISTICAL TOOLS

The data taken from the questionnaires were sorted out, tallied, tabulated,

and treated statistically using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Weighted mean was used to determine the Popularity/frequently used of

Social Networking Site’s among the respondents.

Frequency count, percentage and mean were utilized to determine the Uses

of Social networking site of the respondent.
