I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the experiment students must be able to:

Cognitive
a.) understand the Norman’s principle of everyday life
.
Psychomotor:
a.) determine which things violates the Norman’s principle.

Affective
a.) appreciate the concept of Norman’s principle in the design of everyday things

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In order to accomplish this task, the student must have a clear understanding of the following
topics:
 The concept of HCI
 HCI Design Rules
 Norman’s 7 Principle of Design

III. PROCEDURES

Take a picture of everyday things, must not be IT related and answer the following:
 Where did you get the picture?
 What Norman’s principle was violated in the picture you have taken?
 Explain how it violates the Norman’s principle.

Present the picture in the class and discuss your assignment

Criteria Descriptions Points
Validity of the photo Photo must be taken by the student 25%
Norman’s principle used Correctness of the principle used for the 25%
photo
Explanation Clarity of the argument for the principle 30%
being violated in the photo
Presentation Delivery of the homework 20%
Total 100%

Note: The following rubrics/metrics will be used to grade students’ output in the lab 1.

I took this picture in the LRT

Recto Station before heading
home. As you can see, it has
violated Norman’s principle #1.
Normal doors have its own normal
doorknobs but this one has only
one doorknob which is the front
door. So basically, it’s more likely
one way out especially for
emergencies only.
After that, I took this picture in my
very own house. The principle that
has been violated was number 3.
Because they were no such labels
which one is the salt or the sugar.

I took this photo in my bedroom.

The principle that has been violated
was number 1. Notice all the
number order of the strength of its
spinning process. If we set it on
Fan number 1 to 3 its strength will
become from lower to highest. But
this fan of ours is different, if we
set it to number 1 to 3, it begins
from highest to lowest.
And lastly, I took this photo from our living room. The
violation of this in Norman’s principle was principle #6. Notice
the ceiling fan and the light? They’re too close to each other that
someday it may cause something destructive.
