Course Purpose within MIS:
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of information systems. Students who
have some experience in this area will find that the course compliments that experience. MIS 200 is
also the starting point for students who want to major or have a basic knowledge of MIS.
Expected Learning:
After completing this course successfully, students should be able to –
• Provide an understanding of the strategic role of information systems in organizations.
• Describe the components of a computer system (hardware, software, and networking).
• Understand and identify the current technologies used for obtaining, storing, and
communicating information in support of orientations and decision-making within an
organization.
• Describe the importance and ways to implement security procedures.
• Improve personal computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access, Web Page Authoring, etc.).

Grading Scale:
Final letter grades in the course will be assigned based on the numeric final scores obtained according
to the scale listed below:
1. Quizzes
Approximately five quizzes will be administered throughout the term. These quizzes will typically be
conducted at the beginning of the class periods. The exact dates for quizzes will be confirmed during
the class at least one week prior to the quiz date.
Material Covered:
The quizzes will cover ONLY the Business & Tech Plug-ins from the book and related materials
discussed through the class periods.
Due Date:
The exact date/time for the quiz will be confirmed (through Weekly Handouts) in class at least one
week prior to the quiz date. The quiz will ONLY be available during the scheduled date/time period.
Help/Feedback:
You can expect the grading (only the final score) immediately after you complete the quiz online.
2. Exams:
There will be THREE non-cumulative exams administered throughout the term.
1. Exam # 1 (Chapter 1 & 2)
2. Exam # 2 (Chapter 4 & 5)
3. Exam # 3 (Chapter 6 & 7)
Material Covered:
These exams will test assigned chapter readings and related material discussed primarily through
lecture periods and course activities. Internet Searches, cell phones, personal digital assistants,
pagers, and other electronic devices with communication capabilities are prohibited at all
times during the exam.
Due Date:
The exact date/time for the exam will be confirmed (through Weekly Handouts) in class at least one
week prior to the exam date. The exams will ONLY be available during the scheduled date/time period.

You can expect the grading of your exam to be completed within one week of submission. You can
contact your instructor at any time to provide you feedback regarding your score.
Missed/Make-up Exam Policy:
Absence from exams will be excused only under extraordinary circumstances such as medical or
family emergencies. makeup exam may be granted (one week from the original exam date only) if
the student is able to provide legitimate documentation (such as a physician's note). After this date no
makeup exam may be allowed.You MUST contact your Course Instructor as soon as possible in
regards to any absences.
Due Date:
Each activity needs to be completed during the class periods ONLY. No class activity responses
will be accepted via email unless instructed otherwise.
Help/Feedback:
You can expect grading of your class activities within one week of submission.
Homework Assignments:
To reinforce understanding of various concepts and tools related to the course content, students will
complete several homework assignments. Details will be provided with each assignment.
Due Date:
Each homework assignment will typically have a one-week due date. You MUST submit a hard copy
of your homework at the beginning of the class period.
Help/Feedback:
You can expect grading of your homework assignments within one week of submission.

2) Cell phones should NOT be used during class. If personal circumstances dictate that a
cell phone should be used please leave the room before answering.
3) Computer Use – Many MIS classes take place within computer labs. During this time,
computers should be used only as directed in class – they should not be used to check
email, web sites etc. The instructor reserves the right to ask consistent offenders to leave
the class.
