Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire

HR310 Leadership and Team Building

Alexis J Santiago 8 February 2020

The scores for Transformational is a 15, Transactional is a four and

Passive/Avoidant is a zero. I can understand why my scores will fall out like that,

I’m always looking out for my Sailors and it is taught to us as leaders in the Navy

as Chief Petty Officers to take all of the blame for mistakes and give the

appraises to the Sailors. Because the Sailors are the ones who make the Navy

operational. When I listen to my Sailors as a group or individuals I want to know

what are their needs so I can help them to become better and if I can make that

happen. Then a happy Sailor is a working Sailor that can get the job done. The

transactional style is a 50/50, I do not like giving out awards because I will do

whatever it takes to have my Sailors happy with there needs. I do keep track of

mistakes of what my Sailors or even myself have done the reason being is

because I do not want to have a repeated situation if the issues arise again and I

will remind my Sailors of the accident. In my line of work, I’m not

Passive/Avoidant. I am proactive, not reactive if I can stay ahead of the

workload and problems my workload will be easier to handle. I have to make

decisions if I do not make the decisions my Sailor will use trust in me as well as

my leadership above me.

That there is always room for improvement, with the younger generation

joining I need to be able to change my style of leadership because everyone is

different.I feel that as a leader it shows that I should development more on

inspirational motivation. I need to speak more about the future aspect of how

things may come about to my Sailors, so they can learn how to be a better
leader. Changing the leadership profile is good because as I stated before

everyone is different and one style can work on one person and you have to use

a different style when you are dealing with someone else. I believe the reason

why these leadership styles are different is the way I study my leadership

growing up in the Navy, it is a cycle of leadership style that is passed down from

generation to generation. Times have changed from the Vietnam War to the fight

with terrorism. The in your face all the time yelling is not as effective and talking

to the younger Sailor. Not to say that yelling is not required as long as it seems

fit for the situation.
