Problem 1:
If water is drained from a vertical cylindrical tank by opening a valve at the base, the water will flow fast
when the tank is full and slows down as it continues to drain. As it turns out, the rate at which water
level drops is given by the following equation

𝑑𝑦
= −𝑘√𝑦
𝑑𝑡

Where, k is a constant depending on the shape of the hole and the cross- sectional area of the tank and
drain hole. The depth water y is measured in meters and time t in minutes. If k is .06 then determine the
find the level of water after 2 minutes when water is initially at a level of 3 meter. Use Euler’s method
and a step size of 0.5 minutes.

Problem 2:
The following table shows the pressure of steam at given temperature

Temperature 140 150 160 170 180

o
C
Pressure 3.685 4.854 6.302 8.076 70.225
kgf/cm2

Use Newton divided difference method for quadratic interpolation to find the value of pressure at
temperature =165oC.
Problem 3:
The growth of a flame can be expressed by using following equation

𝑑𝑦
= 𝑦 2 (1 − 𝑦)
𝑑𝑡

After ignition, flame grows very fast to reach a critical size where it remains thereafter.

The initial condition is y (0) =0.01. Compute y at t=200 using Range Kutta 2nd order (Heun’s )method
having step size of h= 100.

Problem 4:
The power P is supplied to wheels is function of speed v of a car. If the mass of the car is m=2000kg
determine the time t for the car to accelerate from 1 m/s to 6 m/s and the power at these speeds is
4.7kW and 43.2kW respectively. Use trapezoidal method to evaluate the value of time. Following is the
relation that can be employed
6
𝑣
𝑡 = 𝑚∫ 𝑑𝑣
1 𝑃

Problem 5:
A missile is launched from a ground station the acceleration during first 80 second of flight, as recorded,
is given in the following table

T(s) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80
a(m/s2) 30 31.63 33.34 35.47 37.75 40.33 43.25 46.69 50.67
Compute the velocity of missile when t=80s, use Simpson’s 1/3 rule, following relation is used to find the
value of velocity
80
𝑣 = ∫ 𝑎𝑑𝑡
0
Problem 6:

Convert the following decimal number to a binary number

(18.375)10= (?)2

Problem 7:
A civil engineer involved in construction requires 4800, 5800 and 5700 m3of sand, fine gravel and coarse
gravel respectively for a building project. There are three pits from which these materials can be
obtained. The composition of these pits is:

Sand % Fine Gravel % Coarse Gravel %

Pit 1 55 30 15
Pit 2 25 45 30
Pit 3 25 20 55
Use gauss elimination method to find how many cubic meters must be hauled from each pit to meet the
engineer’s requirements.

Problem 8:
A trunnion of diameter 12.363" has to be cooled from a room temperature of 80F before it is shrink
fitted into a steel hub. The equation that gives the diametric contraction D of the trunnion in a dry-
ice/alcohol mixture (boiling temperature is  108F ) is given by

108
D  12.363   (T )dT
80

The equation for the thermal expansion coefficient,   a1  a 2T  a3T 2 , is obtained using regression
analysis where the constants of the model are found by solving the following simultaneous linear
equations.

 24  2860 7.26  10 5   a1   1.057  10 4 

 
Find the values of a1 , a 2 ,and a 3 using the Gauss-Seidel method. Use

 a1  0
a   0
 2  
 a3  0

Problem 9:
Water is flowing in a channel at a rate of Q = 20 m3/s. The critical depth ‘y ’ for such a channel must
satisfy the equation:

0 = 1- (Q2/g*Ac3)*B

Where g = 9.81 m/s2,Ac= cross sectional area of the channel (m2), B = width of the channel at the
surface (m)

The width and cross sectional area can be related to depth ‘y’ by:

Ac= 3y + y2/2

B=3+y

Use Bisection method to solve for error less than 1%. Use initial guess of xl= 0.5 and xu= 2.5

Problem 10:
The volume V in hollow horizontal cylinder is given by:

V = [r2cos-1 (r-h/r) – (r-h)*√(2rh-h2)] * L

V = 8.5 m3

r = 2m

L = 5m

Determine “h” using Newton-Raphson method
