First Year Dentists


Teacher : Lachmat Sabrina
Objective: By the end of the session, learners will be able to
identify the different dental problems and suggest some
solutions to them.

Warming Up:
Teacher greets her learners and welcomes them to her session
She pins two pictures on the board and asks her learners to
interpret them through asking a series of questions.

1) What do the pictures represent?


2) Describe the teeth’s condition in one word?
3) What is the secret of good/healthy teeth?
4) What is the reason behind bad/ damaged teeth?
(Teacher elicits different answers from the learners)
Pre-Reading Phase:
Before providing learners with a text to read, the teacher tries
to pre-teach some vocabulary that they may encounter in the
text.
 Activity One: Identify the pictures with the right tag

Tooth Infection

Fluoridated toothpaste

During - Reading Phase


The teacher provides learners with sheets of papers that
contains the text
Asks them to read it carefully for about five/ seven minutes
then do the following Activities
 Activity Two: read the text then answer the following
questions
a) The author here is trying to inform, persuade or
entertain the reader?
b) What background knowledge do you have about the
aforementioned topic?
c) Did you ask yourself questions as you read?
d) What did you do when you came across a notion that
you didn’t know before?
e) What does this passage remind you of? Does it steer a
particular memory in you; you first visit to the dentist?
f) What questions do you have about the topic?
g) Suggest a title to the text?
 Activity Three: Read the text again and say whether
these statements are “true” or” false”:
 Tooth infection can be deadly ………..
 Dental care starts from around three years old……
 It is preferable not to clean a baby’s teeth after each
meal……
 The use of fluoride to protect teeth is a common thing ….
 Swallowing fluoride can be harmless …….
 Children should have their first dental visit by the time
they are one year old……
 Activity Four: Match the medical terms with their
appropriate definition

Post- reading phase:


Topic One: One of your classmates missed today’s session.
He came to you for clarification. In few lines, summarize the
main points discussed in the text to him.
Topic Two: You opened your first dentist clinic recently. Your
first appointment was a three years old kid with a serious
tooth infection. After you gave him the necessary treatment,
you had a talk with his parents about what to do to prevent
such a thing. Write about the advice that you gave to the
parents and your recommendation as a dentist.
