This project Gender Equality, Let’s talk about it! started as expected on October 1st.

A- From 23rd to 26th October, we intervened in Jerada. The program was as follows:

In the mornings: Theater workshops in Jaber Ben Heyan high school, where we raised awareness among
100 young people, including 52 girls and 48 boys.

And Theater workshops in Zerktouni high school where we raised awareness among 162 youngsters,
including 85 girls and 77 boys.

Be a total of 262 youngsters, over this period, including 137 girls and 125 boys.

During the first two days we sensitized a large number of young people, which allowed us to make a
selection for the two following days. A selection composed of 10 young people, 5 girls and 5 boys, to play
on stage in the form of Forum Theater. This selection was made according to the parity between the young
people but also according to their motivation (learning of the texts, listening of the instructions, etc), their
implication, and their interest for the project (punctuality, respect of the group, spirit of initiative, etc).

The 4-day theater workshops conducted around the issue of gender equality were aimed at raising
awareness and preventing gender-based violence (physical and verbal) using a more participatory and
interactive approach.

The sessions held in each class lasted 3 hours to 3 hours 30 often in a classroom or a space reserved for
this purpose (multipurpose room for example) and took place in 3 stages: A first time of exchanges around
definitions (man , woman, discrimination, stereotypes, sexism, etc.), Then, a second time during which the
students played partially written scenes and improvising the end. These scenes deal with particularly
problematic dimensions in terms of equality between girls and boys today (practice of a sport, access to
public space with friends, love life, rumors, etc.). Following each scene played, a debate began in the
classroom and we replayed the scene to try to reach a more egalitarian situation.

During the sessions, students were asked to develop definitions together. they discussed and compared
their experiences and representations. They were actors and active spectators both with an interactive and
participative side that they liked very much.

Thus, staging dialogues and playing them in front of an audience led students to bring out and identify
gender stereotypes in scenes of daily life, to develop arguments to overcome them, and especially to speak
along with respecting the arguments of the others, to deploy an argument, to seek to convince, but also to
concede and to illustrate.

In the light of the many testimonies of young people, these workshops have made it possible to transmit
notions about the culture of equality to those who will build the society of tomorrow and the promotion within
the framework of the education system, of the equality between the sexes. The result is very positive and
the satisfaction of young people is total.

At the end of the workshops, we had a discussion with the high schools directors, who paid tribute to the
high quality of the interventions. We recommended them to create theater workshops and to set up
premises for this purpose. We also encouraged them to share this experience with other schools, youth
club, and so forth.
