1. List down the function of each of the essential parts of a simple circuit
Drycell, AC , DC
Conductors , copper wire
Load, lamp
Switch (Control device )
Fuse or circuit breaker ( Protection device)
Perform DP 13.2, 13.3 , 13.4 & 13.5
2. Define current, voltage and resistance operationally
From DP 13.3, derive Ohm’s law
Comparative values of Voltage and current at fixed resistance. Complete the table
below.
Trial Voltage Current Voltage(v/A)
(volt) (Ampere) Current
1 9.5 2.9
2 6.3 1.9
3 1.1
= 2.44 A
11. What is the resistance of a lamp which allows 0.8 A current when 110.0 V is applied to it?
R = V/I = 110 V / 0.8 A = 137.5 𝛀
12. What is the resistance of lamp that takes in a current of 0.40 ampere when 110 volts is
applied?
R = V/I = 110 v/ 0.40 A = 275 𝛀

3. Example problem
A length of nichrome ribbon with a rectangular cross-section of 0.25 x 10-3 m by : 1.0 x 10-3 m is
to be used as a heating element in a toaster. How long should it be to have a total resistance of
1.5 Ω at room temperature
Given: R = 1.5 Ω
A = ( 0.25 x 10-3 m )( 1.0 x 10-3 m ) = 0.25 x 10-6 m2
𝜌 = 100 x 10 − 8 ( Ωm ) for nichrome
Solution: from the relationship R = 𝜌 L
A solve for L
L = RA / = 𝜌
L = __________________
4. Effects of current in the human body
Less than 0.01 A = tingling or impercibtible
0.02 A = painful and cannot let go
0.03 A = breathing disturbed].’
0.07 A = breathing very difficult
0.1 A = death due to fibrillation
More than 0.2 A = no fibrillation, but severe burning and no breathing
