Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) & Innovation

Over the years, EESL has established itself as a company capable of delivering novel technological products
on a mass consumption scale at economical prices. This has involved implementation of a slew of
innovative strategies in the short history of the company. The firm has balanced its pursuits in the various
genres of innovations, laying the foundation of a firm that will not plateau. This is particularly relevant
since at a global level in the field of energy efficiency, the magnitude and frequency of change is
significantly higher than that witnessed in most other industries.

EESL’s key strategies through the innovation sieve is revealing. EESL’s Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for
All (UJALA), a flagship programme has flourished across the country on the back of several innovative
strategies, not only from its inception, but even in the pre-birth phase. Similarly, EESL is implementing its
unique innovative strategies in all the programmes running across the sectors.

International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy

Efficiency (INSPIRE)

India has significant ambitions for energy security and sustainability. India aims to reduce its emissions
target to 33-35% which is amongst the highest across the developing countries and increase the share of
non-fossil fuel-based electricity to 40% by 2030.

In order to achieve these sustainability targets, we need to implement newer technologies and
approaches with immediate action. India has already achieved a significant stride both in renewables and
energy efficiency adoption, with renewables constituting 8% of the total domestic grid, and the nation’s
energy intensity declining by 58% between 2005-06 and 2015-16. However, the effectiveness in both
these areas is inhibited by numerous factors of challenges. Energy consumption in India is expected to
increase by 165% by 2040, but adoption of energy efficient alternatives is limited to specific appliances
and institutions with minimal support for risk-sharing by financial institutions.

As energy markets evolve and undergo disruption and new innovative tools that are emerging through
the domain of Big Data, IoT and Blockchain become mainstream, there are phenomenal opportunities to
ramp up the deployment of energy efficiency measures in a way that the world has not seen before.

EESL in association with public and private sector stakeholders, supported by bilateral and multi-lateral
development partners, have been proactively driving the diverse agenda to scale up the energy efficiency
market transformation in India. EESL has been organizing editions of International Symposium to Promote
Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE). It is slated to be India’s largest gathering of energy
efficiency experts and innovators from across the globe.

This year, EESL and the World Bank, along with other supporting organisations present "International
Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE) - 2019". The event will focuse
on the theme of Innovation in energy efficiency. INSPIRE 2019 is a unique platform for learning and
collaboration to bring together key policy-makers, influencers, innovators, researchers, government
agencies and stakeholders from diverse sectors from globe to discuss on futuristic energy efficiency
challenges and possible solutions through technology, policy initiatives, delivery & business models and
market transformation strategies could happen by thought-provoking dialogue.
This signature event presents a unique opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with key
Indian and global experts and incubate partnerships and collaborations. It aims to bring to the forefront
global experiences and best implementation practices, and put the spotlight on technology, policy and
financing innovation and cutting-edge research that also give substantial traction to the momentum
already seen in this sector.

Innovation Challenge - #InnovateToINSPIRE 2019

Innovation is the single-most important enabler for resolving environmental problems which can further
reduce costs to induce consumer support. Innovation when brought to markets, the result can spark
unique transformation and can encourage an entire generation for cleaner & greener future. Innovation
explores cross-cutting solutions, scale of replication, affordability and inclusive social impact. With the
diversity and complexity of India’s end-use of applications and services, it is not one technology, or one
business model alone that can come to rescue. Instead, an environment of sustained multi-layered policy
and technology innovation can spark a far-reaching transformation.

With the event like INSPIRE give platform of opportunities to the budding entrepreneurs to showcase
their ready solutions in the presence of expertise environment. Last year’s INSPIRE 2018 has already set
the tone for innovation in India’s energy scenario. The first edition of #InnovateToINSPIRE, a first-of-its
kind energy innovation challenge, invited ideas for scalable solutions in the realm of energy efficiency.

EESL is proud to launch its second edition of its innovation challenge, #InnovateToINSPIRE 2019, which
invited entrepreneurs, innovators and the start-up community to provide viable solution to address
specific issues. The participants are invited to submit sustainable and scalable solutions to five specific
challenges - Improved Grid Management System, Energy Efficient Technologies, Innovation in the space
of clean energy, Innovation in the domain of E-Mobility and Financial Instruments. These challenge areas
will support & sustain Energy Efficiency innovations in the market. The challenge received an
extraordinary response from participants across the globe, with 831 submissions including international
applicants.

#InnovateToINSPIRE Challenge winners are eligible to receive funding of INR 5 lakh each, along with
mentoring and guidance from sector experts to help them bring their solutions to market place.
