Dear Student

As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also
placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and
the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice
the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these
changes during your studies at Unisa.

1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

Welcome to the subject Digital Signal Processing IV (Theory) (DSP4701) at UNISA. This
tutorial letter serves as a guideline to this subject. It provides you with general administrative
information as well as specific information about the subject. Read it carefully and keep it safe
for future reference. We trust that you will enjoy this course.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to enable the student study and analyze the fundamental
principles and applications of digital signal processing. Digital signal processing can be
summarized as:

 analysing transformations of signals that pass through various systems and to

efficiently characterize the signal.

 designing continuous and discrete time filters.

2.2 Outcomes
The outcomes of this module are to enable the student to:

 explain basic signal and noise in the engineering domain.

 perform the Fourier series and Fourier transforms on periodic and nonperiodeic signals.

 perform Laplace transforms and inverse Laplace transform on continuous time signals.

 design of analogue Butterworth and Chebyshev filters.

 perform z-transform and discrete Fourier transforms.

 apply convolution and correlation functions on continuous and discrete time functions. -
design digital FIR and IIR filters and the filter realization structures.

3
 perform state space representations of continuous and discrete systems

12 The phenomenon where a reconstructed signal appears at a lower frequency than

the original is due to modulation.

13 A causal system is a process for which cause and effect relations exists.

14 A system is invertible if its output at time n0, y[n0], does not depend on input values
other than x[n0].

15 The Nyquist frequency of x(t)=4cos(200t) is 200π Hz.

16 In a causal system the output at any time is dependent on the input only at the
