2. Radium decomposes approximately at a rate proportional to the amount present. If 50 mg. now will
be 48 mg. one century later, find the amount of radium after t centuries. How many centuries will elapse
before the radium will weigh 45 mg?

3. If in air at 60˚C, a body cools from 90˚C to 80˚C in 10 min., find its temperature 10 minutes later.

4. A thermometer reading 75˚F is taken out where the temperature is 20˚F. The thermometer reading is
30˚F 4 minutes later. Find the time (in minutes) taken for the reading to drop from 75˚F to within half
degree of air temp.

5. A bacterial population B is known to have a rate of growth proportional to B itself. If between noon
and 3 P.M. the population triples, at what time, no controls being exerted, should B become 200 times
what it was at noon?

6. A bank offers 5% interest compounded continuously in a savings account. Determine (a) the amount
of interest earned in 1 year on a deposit of $250 and (b) the equivalent rate if the compounding were
done annually.

7. A certain radioactive material is known to decay at a rate proportional to the amount present. Initially
there is 50 milligrams of the material present and after two hours it is observed that the material has
lost 10 percent of its original mass, find (a) the mass of the material after 4 hours and (b) the time at
which the material has decayed to one half of its initial mass.

8. A metal bar at a temperature of 100˚F is placed in a room at a constant temperature of 0˚F. If after 20
minutes the temperature of the bar is 50˚F, find (a) the time it will take the bar to reach a temperature
of 25˚F and (b) the temperature of the bar after 10 minutes.

9. The temperature of the body differs from that of a medium, whose temperature is kept constant, by
40˚C. In 5 min, the difference is 20˚C. (a) What is the value of k? (b) In how many minutes will the
difference in temperature be 10˚C?

10. The temperature in a room is 70˚F. A thermometer which has been kept in it is placed outside. In 5
minutes the thermometer reading is 60˚F. Five minutes later, it is 55˚F. Find the outdoor temperature.

11. Ten percent of a substance disintegrates in 100 years. What is its half life?

12. By natural increase, a city whose population is 40,000 will double in 50 years. There is a net addition
of 400 persons per year because of people leaving and moving into the city. Estimate its population in 10
years. Hint. Find first the natural growth proportionality factor.
