FINITE TRIUMPHS IN GOLDEN ROD

SILVER PROSPECTOR Heavily favored Finite (Munnings) ran to the money with her
UPSETS TIZ THE LAW IN KYJC second straight stakes win at Churchill Downs Saturday in the
GII Golden Rod S. Saving ground in third as an eager Bean
(Bernardini) clocked an opening quarter in :23.92, the chestnut
maintained that position, running with her head cocked to the
outside, through a :48.53 half-mile. Sweeping up three wide in
tandem with Lady Glamour (Discreet Cat) approaching the bend,
Finite took control at the top of the lane, but was immediately
confronted by Motu (Paynter). The pair battled to the wire with
Finite determinedly turning back her competitor in the final
strides to register a narrow victory.
AShe=s a super nice filly,@ said winning rider Ricardo Santana.
AThe credit goes to Steve [Asmussen] and his team because they
have been working hard with this filly to get her to relax in the
morning. She settled very nicely behind horses and was not
going to let anyone get by her today.@ Cont. p5

provided trainer Steve Asmussen wit a sweep of the day=s
graded events as he saddled Finite (Munnings) to his first victory
in the GII Golden Rod S. earlier on the card.
Silver Prospector raced in mid-pack as 84-1 shot New Eagle
(Street Boss) showed the way through early splits of :24.39 and
:49.92 with Tiz the Law racing a length off the leader, boxed in
on the fence in a joint third. Launching a three-wide bid on the
backstretch run, the gray drew alongside the pacesetter and
South Bend (Algorithms) turning for home with Tiz the Law
crying out for running room behind them. South Bend backed
out of it in early stretch, making room for Tiz the Law to join the
fray between Silver Prospector and a game New Eagle as Finnick
the Fierce ranged up menacingly on their outside. The
pacesetter threw in the towel leaving Silver Prospector and Tiz
the Law to battle it out as Finnick the Fierce continued his
charge on the outside, but it was Silver Prospector who pulled
clear at the line to score at odds of 7-1. Finnick the Fierce nosed
out favored Tiz the Law in a photo for second.

Silver Prospector | Coady

AIt=s very special to have horses compete at the highest level
on days like today,@ said Asmussen, who also won previous
runnings of the Kentucky Jockey Club with Private Vow (2005)
and Tapiture (2013). AThis horse has learned how to relax and
was able to do that very well today.@
AHe was able to relax behind horses today and was really
comfortable the entire trip,@ said winning rider Ricardo Santana,
who also piloted Finite. AHe showed a lot of strength being able
to kick that hard in the stretch.@
As for the beaten favorite, jockey Manny Franco said, AHe
handled the mud okay but I never was able to get him out of
that spot on the rail. He felt good the entire way, but he got a
little too far behind horses and we never got through.@
AWell, it=s disappointing it=s not our day today,@ said Jack
Knowlton, managing partner of Sackatoga Stable, which owns
Tiz the Law. AWe sent him down here to get a run over the track
and we got into some trouble in the race. Hopefully we can
move forward out of this and we=ll figure out a plan for what can
be next.@
Fourth when unveiled on the turf at Belmont July 6, Silver
Prospector was third next out in a two-turn grass event at
Saratoga Aug. 3 and was sixth in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile
Turf Sprint S. Sept. 7. Switched to the dirt next out at Keeneland
Oct. 13, he graduated by two lengths in a 6 1/2-panel event and
was third next out behind the re-opposing South Bend and
Fighting Seabee (Summer Front) in this venue=s one-mile Street
Sense S. Oct. 27.

Silver Prospector is the 25th black-type victor, 14th graded
winner and first graded winner on dirt for his sire Declaration of

JUDDMONTE DRAFT A STANDING DISH AT

FARHH COLT LEADS TATTERSALLS
TATTERSALLS FOAL FINALE By Emma Berry
NEWMARKET,UK--The sheer breadth of the Tattersalls
December Mares catalogue makes it a must-not-miss event for
any serious breeder in the bloodstock world and one draft that
can be relied upon to have global pulling power is the annual
consignment from the powerhouse that is Juddmonte.
Split into two batches--with in-foal mares selling on Monday
and fillies just out of training going through the ring on
Wednesday--there is ample opportunity to buy into a range of
successful families.
Furthermore, buyers can usually be safe in the knowledge that
the family is still working for you from within the Juddmonte
operation.

event still came in as a healthy second with a total of 663
weanlings bringing turnover of 29,338,300gns at an average of
44,251gns. Though these markers were reduced by 16% and
14%, respectively--again serving a reminder of the highly
selective nature of a polarised bloodstock market--the clearance
rate did rise marginally to 72%.
"A sale average of almost 45,000gns, second only to last year's
wide-margin record, combined with an improved clearance rate
and turnover well in excess of any other European foal sale, are
all positive indicators, yet again reinforcing the status of the
Tattersalls December Foal Sale as the premier fixture of its kind
in Europe," said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.
"Demand for quality British, Irish, French and German foals has
been unrelenting, and while we should continue to recognise
the selective nature of the current market, we have had more
than 70 foals selling for 100,000gns or more this week, as well
as an impressive 14 foals breaking the 300,000gns mark and
international buyers making a significant impact at all levels of
the market." Cont. p2

"There are plenty of stories of half-sisters to Enable (GB) and horse bred can be kept and the key to ongoing success is the
others being sold before they were famous," says Juddmonte's selective pruning of the broodmare band. Just because a certain
racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe. "That is an added incentive filly or mare is deemed surplus to requirement in the Juddmonte
to the buyer because we are intrinsically a homebred operation harvest, however, doesn't mean that she won't prove fruitful for
and the success and future success of the stud is very other breeders. And the decision-making process within the
important." Juddmonte team each year is a careful one.
Grimthorpe explains, "We consider a number factors in terms
of ability, pedigree, the numbers we have already at home in
the stud book and what would suit our stallions to a certain
extent. In other words, when we look at all these factors we try
to look at the combination together, and of course the individual
herself is important if she is to be retained.
"Juddmonte needs to be kept very tight which is why we let
some of the horses go to the market that might not otherwise
go. And of course this is all done in discussion with Prince Khalid
and the family as to what they would like to do. It's a detailed
process."
The draft kicks off with the 11-year-old Dansili (GB) mare All
Time (GB), a winning sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud
victrix Passage Of Time (GB). The latter is also the dam of
National Stud stallion Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), whose first
foals have been well received at Tattersalls in the last week.

graduate by Dubawi, the Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay
(GB).
Seven lots later (lot 1478) comes the 4-year-old Impede (GB)
(Bated Breath {GB}) from another well-established Juddmonte
family. Her dam Coraline (GB) (Sadler's Wells) is the dam of
three stallions: Reefscape (GB), Coastal Path (GB) and Martaline
(GB), the latter, who died last week, having been a successful
flagbearer for Haras de Montaigu under both codes. This is also
the family of Juddmonte stallions Oasis Dream (GB), Kingman

Juddmonte-bred, Whitsbury Manor Stud's popular stallion

two stakes winners and Popular's runners include the dual

Grimthorpe adds, "The December sale has always been a great
melting pot of international breeders and I think we have to
have some horses in order to attract them but equally so you
definitely want to be able to say 'come and have a nice cup of

that we have every year is an important part of that for us."
