Characteristics of a good curriculum

*The Curriculum is continuously evolving- the Curriculum must adapt it's educational activities and
services to meet the needs of a modern and dynamic community.

*The Curriculum is based on the needs of the people- it reflects the needs of the individual and the
society as a whole. The Curriculum is in proper shape in order to meet the challenges of times and make
education more responsive to the clientele it serves

*The Curriculum is democratically conceived- it is developed through the efforts of the group of individuals
from different sectors in the society who are acknowledgeable about the interests, needs and resources
of the learner and the society.

*The curriculum is the result of a long-term effort- it is a product of a long-tedious process. It takes a long
period of time in the planning, management, evaluation, and development of a good curriculum.

*The Curriculum is a complex of details- a good curriculum provides the proper instructional equipment
and meeting places that are often most conducive to learning. It includes the student-teacher relationship,
guidance and counseling program, health services, school and community projects, library and
laboratories, and other school related work experience.

*The curriculum provides for the logical sequence of subject matter- learning is developmental. Classes
and activities should be planned. A good curriculum provides continuity of experiences.

*The Curriculum complements and corporates with other programs of the community- the curriculum is
responsive to the needs of the community. The school offers it's assistance in the improvement and
realization of ongoing programs of the community.

8*The Curriculum has educational quality- quality education comes through the situation of the
individuals intellectual and creative capacities for social welfare and development.

* The Curriculum has administrative flexibility- a good curriculum must be ready to incorporate changes
whenever necessary. The curriculum is open to revision and development to meet the demands of
globalization and the digital age.

2. Explain the distinction between curriculum and the following terms.

a. Syllabus- describe as the summary of the topics covered or units to be taught in the particular subject
while curriculum refers to the overall content, taught in an educational system or a course. Syllabus is
descriptive in nature, curriculum is prescriptive.

b. Scheme of work- it is a plan that defines work to be done in the classroom, on the other hand
curriculum implies the chapters and academic content taught in school or college.
c. Course of study- a course is a set of lectures that can consist of any type of content. A curriculum is a
group of courses usually in a related topic.

d. Lesson note- a step by step guide into a specific lesson made by the teacher before the lesaon, it can
also contain an important information about the expected outcomes of the lesson, the sources of the
lesson and students data.

* What is the importance of curriculum in the school system. Cite an example –

A curriculum reassures students that they're on the right track reaching goals and having desired skills. In
addition to teaching students the importance of responsibility, hardwork and responsible citizenship.

*Explain the following

a. Curriculum as a process- The main purpose of the process is to translate broad statements of intent
into specific plans and actions. It is a process of critical questioning to frame learning and teaching

b. Curriculum as a product- central to approach is the formulation of behavioural objectives stated as


intended learning outcomes.
