Connection Designs for B-03 Building

General Assumptions
 Connection details for both 12m module and 8m module are available in typical module drawings
(J322-ST-DWG-001_Rev 7)
 Module to module connection at site will be both bolted and welded. Each module is welded to
the nearby module by best possible way so that the integrity of the entire building is ensured.

Beam End-Force Summary
The beam end force summary is listed below which is obtained from the STAAD analysis output.

Beam Forces as per Section Property

General Idea to Read the Beam Force Results

Beam forces may not be the forces at the joint. It could be anywhere in the beam length. Therefore the
moment value listed in the table may not be the values at the joint. One should compare it with the
second table where maximum beam end forces are listed.
By examining these 2 tables together, one can identify the maximum end forces/moments coming on to a
joint associated with a particular beam type.

STAAD report the maximum load values for each load component in the first table, therefore it could be
for different load combination and a single corresponding load combination is not identified whereas
maximum beam end forces are identified with load combinations.

Sections UC203x203x71
 Section UC203x203x71 are column members. So generally the axial force on them do not cause
any loading to connections in ideal case as the loading is always downwards.
 The shear loading can cause shear forces on to the 4 bolts of 20mm dia at each location. As per
table given in first page of this appendix, the total shear capacity of 4 bolts is 367 kN
 From the table maximum shear force is observed for UC203x203x71. The resultant can be
calculated as 195.6 kN
 Therefore bolts are safe and UC is 0.52

 The beam is resting on top of column. The bending capacity can be calculated as 2*axial capacity
of one bolt*distance between one bolt and to the opposite end of the column which is
approximately 45+45+60=150 mm. The minimum moment capacity of the joint without
considering any other effect is 137 kN * 2 * 150mm = 41 kN-m. Maximum bending moment
observed as 26.8 kN-m

Sections UC20360XUC20346 & UC20360XUC35667

 Sections UC20360XUC20346 & UC20360XUC35667 are prismatic sections running in the roof.
These members are welded to columns and the welding calculation is shown in this section for
these 2 beams.
 Please refer to “GHD Check on Beam Remedial Works_07102019” which is attached to the end
of this calculation sheet

Sections UC203x203x60
 Sections UC203x203x60 is running on the roof in horizontal direction and their axial load imparts
shear load on to connection. This section is directly connected to the same section in the next
module by means of 6 bolts additional to the 4 bolts
 Maximum axial loading of 228.6 kN is considered from the table.
 There are 4 (20mm) +welding of 20mm plate as shown below for which the total shear capacity is
of bolt itself is 91.9*4=367 kN
 Therefore the bolts are safe with UC 0.62 without considering welding strength
UC2036060DXUC20360
 Sections UC20360XUC20360 is prismatic section considering 1 UC203x60 beam from bottom
part and 1 UC203x60 beam from top part. This section is directly connected to the same section
in the next module by means of 6 bolts additional to the 4 bolts on each beam.
 We can assume that at least 6 (24mm) + 4 (20 mm) bolts will resist shear forces at beam end.
 Maximum axial loading of 267 kN is considered from the table.
 There are 10 bolts for which the total shear capacity is more than 1000 kN
 Therefore the bolts are safe with UC less than 0.27

Sections UC152x152x30
 Sections UC152x152x30 is running on the roof in horizontal direction and their shear load imparts
shear load on to connection.
 Maximum shear loading of 51.61 kN is considered from the table.
 There are 2 bolts of minimum 24mm dia for which the total shear capacity can be calculated as
2 x132 kN = 264 kN
 Therefore the bolts are safe with UC 0.195
