Jokowi Asked to Reconcile Damaged Polri-KPK
Relationship
Oleh Moch Harun Syah pada 23 Jan 2015, 15:30 WIB

The conflict between the Indonesian police and the Indonesian Corruption Eradication
Commission (KPK) exacerbated shortly after the naming of KPK Deputy Bambang
Widjojanto as a suspect for false- statement made to the Constitutional Court in 2010 in
regards to the regional elections at Kotawaringin Barat, Central Kalimantan.

The commotion between the two parties is widely known as 'cicak vs buaya' or 'gecko
vs crocodile' which symbolizes the tumult behind those who are in power. This issue is
speculated to have a direct correlation with previous hotly debated issue regarding the
naming of Budi Gunawan as a suspect of graft- case by KPK. The fact that he remains the
most eligible candidate for head of Indonesian police position aggravated those who are
unsupportive with the notion.

As the issue became rampant, many corruption activist came to KPK. One of them is the
former vice Minister of Justice and Human Rights Denny Indrayana. Denny personally
requests for President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo to help the reconciliation process between
the two parties before the conflict starts to deteriorate even more.

"Lets save the Indonesian police, lets save KPK from this unresolved conflict. President
Jokowi has to engage himself in the reconciliatory attempt as to assure the safety of all,"
Denny said at KPK Building, Friday (23/01/2015).

Denny speculates the naming of Budi Gunawan as a suspect for graft- case is driven by
personal reason. The conflict between the Indonesian police and the Indonesian

Indonesian Student Executive Body Alliance (BEM SI) refused the invitation
from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who asked them for dialogue at State
Palace. However, the students will accept the invitation if the discussion is
conducted openly. x

“We will only accept to meet Mr President if the discussion held openly and can be
witnessed directly by public,” said BEM SI Coordinator, M. Nurdiansyah in his official
statement on Friday.

In addition, Jokowi was asked to address a number of demands from students which
listed in the ‘Declaration on Completing Reformation in a strict and thorough
manner. Nurdiansyah asserted the meeting or discussion must guarantee that there
would be concrete policies in order to create a better society.

5
According to Nurdiansyah, every aspiration of students came from public anxiety
due to the incompatibility of state policies for the people. He stated all of these
demonstrations will not occur if the state is willing to open up and be able to hear
what the public wants.

“All of our demands have been conveyed clearly in the demonstrations and also
through media channels. Therefore, what is necessary needed is not a meeting, but
the firm attitude of Mr President to fulfill our aspirations,” Nurdiansyah explained.

Since Tuesday (Sept 24), thousands of university students from different campuses
protested against several controversial bills outside House of Representatives
building in Jakarta. The mass demonstrations turned violent. It was believed to be
the biggest student protest since 1998.
