BODY LANGUAGE. IS IT IMPORTANT IN COMMUNICATION?

Body languages or nonverbal communication, have been a great important factor in

communication, this means that all the time humans are using it, always trying to express
emotions and feelings in different situations. This type of language is considered for some,
one of the most difficult to understand, because in some cultures there are gestures, habits
and also custom that are not well seen, and it can develop miscommunication. Others think
that body language is something that happens without conscience, sometimes people don’t
know how to control their body, and it can generate or show insecurity at the time of
speaking. In my point of view body language is an important thing that all people have for
communicate, and also it can become a tool to facilitate communication or business
between cultures if you know how to control it.
First I have to mentioned that problems in business are due to miscommunication between
countries or companies with different cultures, it means that sometimes the message is not
correctly received because the body language express not the same as the message, and the
person who is getting the information most of the time gives more importance to body
language than the real message. Therefor as is mentioned by Maja Bratanic (2007):
The nonverbal component of communication thus easily becomes a factor linguistic
and cultural miscommunication. The boundaries between verbal and nonverbal,
linguistic and extralinguistic, are delineated by very hazy lines, and separating then
into Two distinct categories often proves to be virtually impossible. (p.84)
For that reason, is necessary to understand that communication is composed by verbal and
nonverbal language, this implies that is important to consider all the factors presents in a
culture like habits, gestures and custom, so that in that way the message can be interpreted
correctly.
In second place it is also important to talk about body language is a product of your
subconscious, because all the time that humans are communicating the body expressed
almost all the opinions, thoughts, shows if you are agree or disagree or even if you are
lying or not, with different actions, attitudes or gestures. In business world, people
sometimes try to lie about the economic or political system that they used in their
companies just because they want to earn much money in spite of know that their body
language talk for itself. Continuing with this idea it is important to say that.
Dishonest behavior is easy to recognize when you know what to look for.
Remember people don’t enjoy lying. […]. There are so many clues and tells that no
one can cover them all, while they are busy concentrating on the effect their lie is
having on their audience. (Hamilton,2013.ND).
According to Hamilton some people can not hide their body language, because they are
asking to be believed and their attitudes show the opposite.
In conclusion body language have an important place in communication, also this can be a
good clue if you are doing business with someone, because you can realize if that person is
following your ideas or if he or she are just like bored about your presentation. Just as you
can recognize someone’s attitude whether or not they are connected to you, they can
observe yours , for that reason if you don’t know how to manage it, it will play against you
and can deteriorate the relationship between different cultures that all people in business
world try to get.
