The Prophet ‫’ﷺ‬s dua at Taif
" November 20, 2016

After a decade of preaching in Makkah, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬had lost his uncle and his wife and was still reject-
ed by tribesmen. In an attempt to !nd a more receptive audience, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬traveled to Taif, hoping
that his message would !nd a home in the oasis city. Instead, he was rudely insulted by the city leaders
and then pelted with stones by the tribe members. Bruised and rejected, with his blood clotting as it
leaked onto his sandals, he made the following du’a.

‫اللهم إليك أشكو ضعف قوتي وقلة حيلتي وهواني على الناس‬
?‫ياأرحم الراحم? أنت أرحم الراحم‬
‫ستضعف? وأنت ربي‬I‫أنت رب ا‬
‫إلى من تكلني إلى عدو يتجهمني أم الى عدو ملكته امرى‬
‫ أبالي ولكن عافيتك هي أوسع لي‬U‫إن لم يكن بك غضب علي ف‬
‫رض‬Z‫أعوذ بنور وجهك الذي أضاءت له السموات و ا‬
‫خره‬Z‫وأشرقت له الظلمات وصلح عليه أمر الدنيا وا‬
‫أن ينزل بي غضبك أو يحل علي سخطك‬
‫بك‬m‫قوة إ‬m‫حول و‬m‫لك العتبى حتى ترضى و‬

To You, my Lord,
I complain of my weakness,
lack of support and the humiliation I am made to receive.
Most Compassionate and Merciful!
You are the Lord of the weak,
and you are my Lord.
To whom do You leave me?
To a distant person who receives me with hostility?
Or to an enemy You have given power over me?
As long as you are not displeased with me,
I do not care what I face.
I would, however,
be much happier with Your mercy.
I seek refuge in the light of Your face by which
all darkness is dispelled and both this life and the life to come
are put in their right course against incurring your wrath
or being the subject of your anger.
To You I submit,
until I earn Your pleasure.
Everything is powerless without your support.

The translation is correct but the arabic text is incorrect and needs to be edited. ‫ صديق‬means friend. The
Arabic text doesn’t correspond to the correct translation.

The !fth line should be ‫ – الى من تكلى الى بعيد يتجهمنى ام الى عدو ملكته امرى‬which is the correct translation of to
whom do you leave me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility or to an enemy you’ve given
power over me.
