Manchester United F.C.

Manchester United F.C. is a world-famous English football club. It is based at Old Trafford Football
Ground, Trafford, Greater Manchester. Manchester United is one of the most successful football clubs in
English football history, having won the FA Premier League/Football League 18 times, FA Cup 11 times,
the League Cup twice, the European Cup twice, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once, the Intercontinental
Cup once, and the European Super Cup once. The club has had the highest average attendance in English
football for the past 34 seasons, with the exception of 1987-1989 during redevelopment at Old
Trafford. The 'Red Devils' are considered to be the best supported football club in the world. They play in
FA Premier League.
The club was formed as Newton Heath FC in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire
Railway depot at Newton Heath. After nearing bankruptcy in 1902, the club was taken over by J H
Davies who changed its name to Manchester United. United appointed Sir Matt Busby as manager after
the Second World War, and his then-unheard-of policy of producing most of the players through the
club's youth team brought great success, with the club winning the Football League in 1956 and 1957.
This success was halted by the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which eight of the club's players died. It
was thought that the club might fold, but instead went on to win the football league in 1965 and 1967, and
the European Cup in 1968. The club did not see success again until the 1990s and early 2000s when Sir
Alex Ferguson guided it to eight league championships in eleven years, most recently in the 2002-03
season. In 1999, Manchester United became the only team to win the treble, that is the UEFA Champions
League, FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season.

Birmingham City F.C.

Birmingham City Football Club is an English football club based in Birmingham. Originally known as
Small Heath Alliance(1875), followed by Small Heath in 1888, they became Birmingham F.C. in 1905
and Birmingham City F.C. in 1943.
The club is nicknamed The Blues (from the colour of their kit) and the fans are known as Bluenoses.
The most successful period in their history was in the 1950s and early 1960s. They achieved their highest
finishing position of sixth in the First Division in the 1955–56 season and reached the 1956 FA Cup
Final, progressed to the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960 and 1961, and won their only major
trophy, the League Cup, in 1963, beating Aston Villa 3–1 on aggregate. They have spent the majority of
their history in the top tier of English football, though their darkest era came between 1986 and 2002,
when they were continuously outside the top division. From the 2009/10 season they are back in FA
Premier League.
In 1956 Blues became the first English club side to compete in Europe as they took part in the 1955-58
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. They were not however the first English team in Europe – a representative London
XI side had played their first group match in the same competition in June 1955, nearly a year before
Birmingham's first group match in May 1956 Blues took part in the competition on four separate
occasions between 1956 and 1962. Blues were unbeaten in the 12 home games.
The biggest crowd was that of 75,000 for the 2nd leg of the Final on the 4th of May 1960 at the Nou
Camp against Barcelona. An audience of 60,000 witnessed the second leg of the semi final clash with the
Catalan side in November 1957 and a similar crowd saw the clash between Barca's city neighbours RCD
Espanyol in November of 1961. The biggest crowd seen at St Andrews was that of 40,524 for the first leg
of the Blues-Barca final in March 1960.
In April 1961 Blues became the first English side to beat Internazionale (Inter Milan) at the San Siro by
two goals to one, goals from Jimmy Harris and Inter defender Balleri, in the semi final first leg of that
season competition. Blues also won the return leg at St Andrews 2-1 with goals from Jimmy Harris and
Bertie Auld.

Chelsea F.C. London

Chelsea Football Club (also known as The Blues or previously as The Pensioners), founded in 1905, are
an English Premier League football team. The club's home ground is the 42,360 capacity Stamford Bridge
football ground in Fulham, south-west London. Despite their name, the club is based just outside the
Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It is on
the Fulham Road, which runs between Fulham and Chelsea. The club have won three league titles, three
FA Cups, three League Cups and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups. They are the reigning league champions
for the second year in a row (2005 and 2006).
Chelsea F.C. was founded on March 14, 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher's Hook), opposite
today's main entrance to the ground on the Fulham Road, and were elected to the Football League shortly
afterwards. The club began with established players recruited from other teams and promotion to the top
flight was swift, but their early years saw little success, save for an FA Cup final in 1915, where they lost
to Sheffield United. Former England centre-forward.
Ted Drake became manager in 1952 and proceeded to modernise the club. He removed the club's Chelsea
pensioner crest, improved the youth set-up and training regime, re-built the side, and led Chelsea to their
first major trophy success - the League championship - in 1954–55. The following season saw UEFA
create the European Champions' Cup, but after objections from The Football League and the FA Chelsea
were persuaded to withdraw from the competition before it started. The League Cup was won in 1965,
but in three seasons the side were beaten in three semi-finals and were FA Cup runners-up. They also
narrowly missed out on winning the league title in 1964-65. In 1970 Chelsea ran out FA Cup winners,
beating Leeds United 2–1 in a pulsating final replay. A UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph was added to
the haul the following year - Chelsea's first European honour - with another replayed win, this time over
Real Madrid in Athens.
Gullit became player–manager and added several top-class international players to the side, particularly
Gianfranco Zola, as the club won the FA Cup and established itself as one of England's top sides again,
earning a reputation for playing Sexy Football. Gullit was then sacked after a dispute with Bates and
Gianluca Vialli was installed as player-manager. Vialli led the team to victory in the League Cup and the
Cup Winners' Cup in 1998, a near-miss in the Premier League title race in 1998-99 and the UEFA
Champions League quarter-finals in 2000. In 2000, Chelsea were again FA Cup winners with a 1-0 win
over Aston Villa. A disappointing start to the 2000–01 season saw Vialli sacked in favour of another
Italian, Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri guided Chelsea to the 2002 FA Cup final and Champions League
qualification in 2002–03.
In June 2003, Bates sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for £60 million, thus
completing the biggest-ever sale of an English football club. Over £100 million was spent on new players.
The spending saw an upturn in the club's form, but they had to settle for 2nd place in the Premiership, and
reaching the Champions League semi-finals. Ranieri was sacked and replaced by successful Portuguese
coach José Mourinho, who had just guided FC Porto to UEFA Champions League success.
2005 was Chelsea's centenary year. Led by captain John Terry and high-scoring midfielder Frank
Lampard, they celebrated it in style by becoming Premiership champions in a record-breaking season
(most clean sheets, fewest goals conceded, most victories, most points earned), League Cup winners with
a 3–2 win over Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium and reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
The following year, they were again League Champions, equalling their own Premiership record of 29
wins set the previous season. They also became the fifth team to win back-to-back championships since
the Second World War and the only London club to do so since the 1930s.

Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. are a Wolverhampton-based football club playing at Molineux. The
club is mostly referred to by a shortened version of its name, Wolves. The club's local rivals are West
Bromwich Albion (known as the 'Black Country' derby), Aston Villa and Birmingham City.
Wolves were founder members of the Football League and before the outbreak of the Great War they had
won the F.A. Cup twice. But Wolves really established themselves as a top side under the management of
Stan Cullis after the Second World War. They were league champions three times and F.A. Cup winners
twice between 1949 and 1960. Wolves have yet to match the successes of the Stan Cullis era, although
they did win the League Cup in 1974 under Bill McGarry and again in 1980 under John Barnwell. Since
1984 they have spent just one season in the top division.
The team was founded as St. Lukes in 1877 by John Baynton, Jack Addenbrooke and Jack Brodie after a
group of pupils at St Luke's school in Blakenhall had been presented with a football by their headmaster
Harry Barcroft. Two years later, they merged with local cricket and football club The Wanderers, to form
Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves remained as members of the Football League First Division from 1888 until relegation in 1906,
winning the FA Cup for the first time on March 26 1893. The club's return to the English top flight
heralded another period of relative success, as Wolves reached the UEFA Cup final in 1972 and two years
later beat Manchester City to win the Football League Cup for the first time. In 1976 Wolves were
relegated again, but bounced back right away as Second Division champions. Three years later, an Andy
Gray goal defeated reigning European champions Nottingham Forest to bring League Cup glory to the
Molineux in 1980. Wolves have yet to win another major trophy.
From the 2009/10 season they are back in FA Premier League.

Burnley F.C.
Burnley Football Club is a professional football club based in Burnley, in north-east Lancashire,
England. Nicknamed The Clarets due to their claret and blue strip, founded in 1882, they have played at
Turf Moor since 1883. They were founder members of The Football League in 1888.
Burnley have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920-21 and 1959-60, and were FA Cup
winners on April 25, 1914, beating Liverpool F.C. 1-0 at Crystal Palace.
As recently as 1960 they were league champions, but have been outside the top flight since 1976 and
from 1985 endured a seven-year spell in the lowest tier of the Football League. In 1987 they narrowly
avoided relegation to the Conference. Since 2000, they have been in the second tier of the English league.
Burnley enjoyed a long unbroken top flight spell ending in 1971 in which, more often than not, they were
in the upper reaches of the League table. The 50s and early 60s saw the team revolve around the midfield
engine room of Jimmy Adamson and Jimmy McIlroy. It was around these two that the championship-
winning team of 1960 was built, managed by Harry Potts. Two years later the Clarets narrowly missed
out on a League and Cup double. The departure of McIlroy to Stoke City and retirement of Adamson
coincided with a decline in fortunes; they nonetheless managed to finish 3rd in 1966. The remainder of
the decade was otherwise one of mid-table mediocrity, with Potts being replaced by Adamson as manager
in 1970. Adamson was unable to halt the slide and relegation followed in 1971.
Burnley won the Second Division title in 1973 with Adamson still in charge. In the First Division, led by
elegant playmaker Martin Dobson, the side managed 6th in 1974, and 10th (despite Dobson being sold to
Everton early in that season) in 1975. Relegation from the First Division in 1976 saw the end of
Adamson's tenure as manager, and the club have not been back in the highest level since. From the
2009/10 season they are back in FA Premier League.

Nottingham Forest F.C.

Nottingham Forest Football Club is an English football club, based at the City Ground, which is just
outside the official boundary of Nottingham on the south side of the River Trent. The club lies directly
across the Trent from its city rival, Notts County.
From the 2009/10 season the are back in Football League Championship (second level). Their relegation
to League One (third level) of the Football League in May 2005 made them the first European Cup
winners ever to later play outside their country's top two divisions.
Forest were founded in 1865 shortly after their neighbours Notts County, (the world's oldest surviving
professional football club), in 1862. They joined the Football Alliance in 1888, and won the competition
in 1892, which allowed them entry to the Football League. Forest claimed their first major honour when
they won the 1898 FA Cup (beating rivals Derby County). However, for much of the first half of the 20th
century the club spent life in the Second Division (and had to seek re-election in 1914 after finishing
bottom). In 1949 the club were relegated to the Third Division, but bounced back two years later as
champions thanks to 35 goals from Wally Ardron - still the club's record goalscorer in a season - and
returned to the Second. A brief period of glory followed at the end of the 1950s, as they regained First
Division status in 1957 and won the FA Cup for a second time in 1959, despite losing Roy Dwight
through a broken leg and becoming the first team to defeat the Wembley 'hoodoo'. By this time Forest had
become the biggest team in Nottingham, overtaking Notts County. But after reaching the high of runners-
up spot and cup semi-finalists in 1967, Forest were relegated from the First Division in 1972.
Forest were considered a small team by English league standards until the mid 1970s, when Brian Clough
and his assistant Peter Taylor took the helm at the club. Clough was the most successful manager in the
history of Nottingham Forest football club. They won promotion to the top division at the end of the
1976-77 season after finishing third in the Second Division, but no-one could have predicted how
successful Clough's team would be over the next three seasons.
Nottingham Forest became one of the few teams (and the last team to date) to win the English First
Division Championship 1977-78 season, a year after winning promotion from the English Second
Division. In 1978-79, Forest went on to win the European Cup by beating Malmö FF [1-0] in Munich's
Olympic Stadium and retained the trophy in 1979-80, beating Hamburger SV [1-0] in Madrid thanks to
an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Peter Shilton. They also won the European Super Cup, played
in 1984 UEFA Cup semifinal and won four League Cups.
Nottingham Forest's next trophy came in 1989 when they beat Luton Town in the League Cup final. For
most of the season they had been hopeful of completing a unique domestic treble, but were beaten into
third place by champions Arsenal and runners-up Liverpool and lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-
final at Hillsborough, where 96 Liverpool fans were trampled to death on terracing. Clough's side retained
the League Cup in 1990 when they beat Oldham Athletic. There was chance for more success in 1991
when Forest reached their first ever FA Cup final under Brian Clough and went ahead after scoring an
early goal (Stuart Pearce free kick) against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but ended up losing 2-1 in
extra time after an own goal by Des Walker. Forest reached their third League Cup final in four seasons
in 1992, but lost to Manchester United.
Brian Clough's 18-year reign as manager ended in May 1993 when Forest were relegated from the
Premier League after 16 illustrious years of top flight football which had seen one league title, two
European Cups and four League Cups. Since Brian Clough's departure, Nottingham Forest have had eight
managers and spent just four out of 12 seasons in the Premiership. Brian Clough is considered one of the
greatest managers in English football history by fans of all clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday F.C.
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club (often abbreviated as SWFC), nicknamed The Owls, is one of the
oldest football clubs in the English Football League founded in 1867. Based in Sheffield, South
Yorkshire, England, Sheffield Wednesday's chief rivals are Sheffield United F.C. with whom they play in
the Steel City Derby. The Owls have won four league titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup, but their
League Cup triumph (secured in 1991) is their only major trophy since World War II. They did reach
both domestic cup finals in 1993, but lost 2-1 to Arsenal each time.
Sheffield Wednesday currently play in the Football League Championship with Paul Sturrock as
manager. Home games are played at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, which had staged numerous FA
Cup semi-finals prior to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.
The club were initially a cricket team formed in 1820, named The Wednesday Cricket Club. The
footballing side of the club was established to keep the team together and fit during the winter months,
after a meeting on the evening of Wednesday 4 September 1867 at the Adelphi Hotel, Sheffield; they
played their first match against the Mechanics on 19 October the same year. The 1880s saw two major
events that radically changed the face of the club. In 1882 the cricket and football clubs parted ways; the
cricket club would later go out of existence in 1925. The football club turned professional in 1887 after
pressure from players threatening to defect to other clubs. The move to professionalism led to the team
leaving Bramall Lane, which took a share of the ticket revenue, and building a new ground at Olive
Grove. In 1889 the club became founder members of the Football Alliance, of which they were the first
champions in a season where they also reached the 1890 FA Cup Final, losing 6-1 to Blackburn Rovers at
the Kennington Oval. Despite finishing the following season bottom of the Alliance, they were eventually
elected to the expanded Football League in 1892. They won the FA Cup for the first time in 1896, beating
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Crystal Palace. In a strong decade Wednesday won the league twice in
the 1902-03 and 1903-04 seasons and the FA Cup again in 1907, beating Everton, again at Crystal Palace
by 2 goals to 1. After this the club went through a relatively fallow period for another two decades.
The 1950s saw Wednesday unable to consistently hold on to a position in the top flight. After being
promoted back up in 1950, they were relegated three times, although each time they bounced back up by
winning the Second Division the following season. The decade ended on a high note with the team finally
finishing in the top half of the First Division for the first time since World War II. This led to a decade of
successfully remaining in the First Division, which included a run to the FA Cup final in 1966.
Wednesday were relegated at the end of the 1969-70 season, starting the darkest period in the club's
history. After going into free-fall they dropped to the Third Division for the first time in their history and
were marooned there for five seasons. The club were almost relegated to the Fourth Division in 1976, but
a revival under the management of Jack Charlton saw them return to the First Division in 1984.
Sheffield Wednesday spent the majority of the 1980s and 1990s in the top tier of English football. 1990-
91 was the only season out of sixteen in a row that Wednesday spent in a lower division, but the season is
best remembered by fans for Wednesday's swift return to the top flight, and their League Cup victory over
Manchester United to win their first major trophy for over 50 years. The 1992-93 season established
Sheffield Wednesday as a top club as they visited Wembley four times during the season - a League Cup
final and an FA Cup semi-final, final and replay. However Wednesday failed to win any silverware,
losing to Arsenal in both League and FA Cup finals, the latter after Andy Linighan's late extra-time
winner in the replay to give Arsenal the victory.
A failure to beat Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. in the penultimate game of the 2002-03 season
condemned them to another relegation. After failing to gain promotion the following season and a poor
start to the 2004-05 Coca-Cola League One campaign, Turner was replaced by former Southampton F.C.
manager Paul Sturrock. Sturrock revitalised Sheffield Wednesday's fortunes and they finished fifth in
League One at the end of the 2004-05 season, qualifying for the promotion playoffs. Over 40,000 SWFC
fans travelled to Cardiff to watch the Owls beat Hartlepool United 4-2 after extra time, achieving
promotion to the Championship, where they have remained since.

Leicester City Football Club, nicknamed the "Foxes", are an English football team, playing in the

field by the Fosse Road. Before moving to Filbert Street in 1891, the club played at five different
grounds. The club joined the Football Association in 1890. It joined in the Midland League in 1891, and
after finishing second was elected to the Division Two of the Football League in 1894. The first ever
league game was a 4-3 defeat at Grimsby, but a week later at Filbert Street the club recorded its first
league win against Rotherham. The club's largest win to date, 13-0 against Notts Olympic in a FA Cup
qualifying game was also recorded in that season.
Leicester City's highest league finish is runners-up in Division One in the 1928-29 season. Their highest
finish in the Premiership, the current incarnation of the top flight of the Football League is eighth in the
1999-00 season. In pre-war football, they were Divison Two champions twice, in 1924-25 and 1936-37.
They were War League South champions in 1941-42. Post-war, they have won the Second Divison
championship in 1954, 1957, 1971 and 1980. This is the most in post war English football, joint with
Sunderland_A.F.C. Leicester have somewhat of a reputation of being a "yo-yo" team (a team the moves
up and down leagues). Statistics suggest that this is deserved, since Leicester hold the record for the most
promotions and relegations in the Football League, 11 moves up and 11 down. All these moves have been
between the first and second flight of the Football League, except the 2008/09 season, spent in third level.
They have been League Cup winners three times (1964, 1997 and 2000). They were Charity Shield
winners in 1971. They have been runners-up in the FA Cup in 1949, 1961, 1963 and 1969. They have
reached the first round of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1961-62, and the first round of the UEFA
Cup in 1997-98 and 2000-01.

Tottenham Hotspur London F.C.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are an English football club who play in the FA Premier League.
The club is also known as Tottenham and Spurs, while their own fans also refer to them as the
Lilywhites because of their traditional white shirts. Their home ground is White Hart Lane, Tottenham,
London. Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the league and cup Double, winning
both competitions in the 1960-61 season. In 1963, Spurs became the first British club to win a European
trophy - the European Cup Winners' Cup. The club motto is Audere est Facere (lit: "To dare is to do")
and their emblem is the cockerel and ball.
In 1882 the Hotspur Football Club was formed by young men from a local grammar school and Hotspur
cricket club. It is thought that the name Hotspur was associated with Sir Henry Percy (Sir Harry Hotspur)
who lived locally in the 14th Century. The team later became Tottenham Hotspur to distinguish itself
from another team called London Hotspur. In 1899 Spurs made their final ground move to a former
market garden in nearby High Road, Tottenham. In time the ground adopted the name of a local
thoroughfare, "White Hart Lane". The move proved successful as in 1900, Tottenham won the Southern
League title and crowned this achievement the next year by winning the FA Cup - becoming the only
non-League club to do so since the formation of the Football League. Tottenham were Division Two
Champions in 1919-20 and in the following year, on April 23, 1921, Spurs went all the way to their
second FA Cup Final victory beating Wolves 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Bill Nicholson guided Tottenham to major trophy success three seasons in a row in the early 1960s: the
double in 1961, the FA Cup and European Cup Semi-final in 1962, and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963.
They won the 1967 FA Cup and finished third in the league. Nicholson added the League Cup (1971 and
1973) and the UEFA Cup (1972) to Tottenham's illustrious history before he resigned at the start of the
1974-75 season due to both a poor start, and his disgust at seeing rioting fans in Rotterdam in a UEFA
Cup final, which Spurs lost.
Tottenham slipped out of the First Division at the end of the 1976-77 season, and the club installed Keith
Burkinshaw as manager in a bid to revitalise their fortunes. They won promotion to the top flight and
lifted the FA Cup in 1981 beating Manchester City in a replay, with Ricardo Villa scoring a memorable
solo goal. Spurs retained the trophy the following year, beating QPR. Key players in this successful
Tottenham side included Steve Archibald, Garth Crooks, Glenn Hoddle, Osvaldo Ardiles, and Steve
Perryman who, in seventeen seasons, played 655 league games for Spurs. These players inspired
Tottenham to UEFA Cup glory in 1984. Spurs veteran Terry Venables was named Pleat's successor, and
after two league seasons, guided the club to third place in 1989-90 and an FA Cup win in 1991.

Ipswich Town F.C.

Ipswich Town Football Club is the professional football club of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, founded in
1878. Popularly known as the Blues for the colour of their jerseys, or Town for short. The horse in the
club's crest is a Suffolk Punch. Ipswich currently play in the Football League Championship, the second
tier of English football after the FA Premier League.
Ipswich have launched the careers of two England managers. Alf Ramsey guided Ipswich to league title
glory in their first season as a top division team (1961-62). Bobby Robson took Ipswich to an F.A Cup
triumph in 1978 and UEFA Cup glory three years later, as well as achieving second place in the league on
two occasions. He then went on to manage England in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, taking England to
a Semi Final spot in the latter. In some respect, it is thought that Ipswich has supplied England with two
of the most successful managers in its long footballing history. Ipswich are the only club to have ever
won the English top flight division in their debut season (1961-62). Ipswich is the only British team (who
have played more than two games) unbeaten at home in European competition.
Ipswich Town won promotion to the First Division for the first time in its history on winning the Second
Division Championship at the end of the 1960-61 season (having entered the league in the Third Division
South in the 1938-39 season) under Alf Ramsey. Ipswich's first top division season was an enormous
success, winning the First Division Championship and qualifying for the European Cup at the end of an
excellent 1961-62 season. Under Jackie Milburn Ipswich's fortunes on the pitch plummeted, slipping
down to the Second Division in 1964, just two years after winning the league title, conceding a top
division record of 121 league goals in 42 games. The club remained in the Second Division for four years
until Bill McGarry finally guided Ipswich to promotion in the 1967-68 season.
It took a while for Bobby Robson to establish himself at Ipswich. His first two seasons were a case of
staying up. From finishing 18th and 19th (from 22) in his first two seasons he then managed to push up
the table finishing 13th in 1972, and in 1973 Ipswich finished 4th, qualified for the UEFA Cup for the
first time. Ipswich became a regular feature in the top five of the league and in the UEFA Cup, again
winning the youth cup in 1975. Bobby Robson gained Ipswich Town's first FA Cup success in 1978 with
a victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, and more success came with a UEFA Cup victory in 1981
and runners-up finish in the league in 1981 and 1982.
Ipswich finally returned to the Premiership in 2000 after coming from behind to beat Barnsley 4-2 in the
last Division One playoff final at Wembley Stadium before the old stadium was to be redeveloped. Most
observers expected Ipswich to suffer relegation from the Premiership in their first season back at this
level, but George Burley's hardworking side defied the odds and finished in an impressive fifth place—
being pipped by Liverpool on the last day of the season for a place in the Champions League - gaining
themselves a UEFA Cup place instead, and earning George Burley the Manager of the Year Award.
In the following season's UEFA Cup, Ipswich played Torpedo Moscow in the first round and won 3-2 on
aggregate. After a goalless draw with Helsingborgs in the first leg, they won 3-1 in the second. Ipswich
beat Inter Milan 1-0 at home in round 3 with a headed goal from Alun Armstrong, but lost the tie over
two legs after a 4-1 defeat in Italy. The loss of income due to relegation led to the club going into
financial administration. They had the minor consolation of again qualifying for the UEFA Cup, this time
via UEFA's Fair Play route, and became the first lower-level team to survive two ties in the same UEFA
Cup (losing in the second round proper).

Everton Liverpool F.C.

Everton Football Club is located in the city Liverpool in Merseyside, England. The club competes in the
FA Premier League and have contested more seasons in the top flight of English football than any other.
They are one of the top five most successful English clubs in terms of major honours, having won the
League Championship nine times, the FA Cup five times and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup once. The
club's most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup. Currently managed by David Moyes, the first team
have experienced a period of inconsistency, with results under Moyes' tenure ranging from as low as 17th
to as high as 4th. Everton have a notable rivalry with Liverpool F.C., who were formed after a dispute
over the rent at Anfield, Everton's old ground, in 1892; since then Everton have been based at Goodison
Park as a result of the split.
Everton were founded as St. Domingo F.C. in 1878 in order that people from the parish of St. Domingo
Methodist Church could play a sport outside of the summer months (during which time cricket was
played). A year later the club were renamed Everton F.C. after the surrounding area, as people outside the
parish wished to participate. They were founder members of the Football League in 1888, and won their
first League Championship title in 1890–91. They won the FA Cup in 1905–06 and League title again in
1914–15, but it was not until 1927 that Everton's first sustained period of success began. In 1925 the club
signed Dixie Dean who, in 1927–28, set the record for league goals in a single season (60 goals in 39
league games, a record that still stands to this day), helping Everton achieve their third league title.
Everton were relegated to the Second Division two years later but won the title and thus promotion at the
first attempt. On their return to the top flight in 1931–32, Everton wasted no time in reaffirming their
status and won a fourth League title at the first opportunity. They also won their second FA Cup in 1932–
33 with a 3–0 win against Manchester City in the final. The era ended in 1938–39 with a fifth League
title. The advent of World War II saw the suspension of League football, and once official competition
restarted in 1946, the Everton team had been split up and paled in comparison to their pre-war
incarnation. Everton were relegated again in 1950–51 and did not return until 1953–54, when they
finished as runners-up in their third season in the Second Division. The club have been a top flight ever-
present since.
Everton's second successful era started when Harry Catterick was made manager in 1961. In 1962–63, his
second season in charge, Everton won the League title and in 1966 followed with a 3–2 FA Cup win over
Sheffield Wednesday. Everton again reached the final two years later, but this time were unable to
overcome West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. A year later in 1969–70, Everton won the First Division,
nine points clear of nearest rivals Leeds United. However, the success did not last; the team finished
fourteenth, fifteenth, seventeenth and seventh in the following seasons. Catterick retired and Everton
failed to win any silverware for the remainder of the 1970s. Though the club finished third in 1977–78
and fourth the following season, manager Gordon Lee resigned in 1981, after Everton slid down the table
and fell further behind local rivals Liverpool. Howard Kendall took over as manager and guided Everton
to their most successful era. Domestically, Everton won the FA Cup in 1983–84 and two league titles in
1984–85 and 1986–87. They were also runners-up to neighbouring Liverpool in both league and cup
competitions in 1985–86 and were again on the losing side to Liverpool in the 1984 League Cup final and
the 1988–89 FA Cup final. In Europe, Everton won their first and only trophy in the shape of the 1984–85
European Cup Winners' Cup. After beating University College Dublin, Inter Bratislava and Fortuna
Sittard, Everton defeated German giants Bayern Munich 3–1 in the semi-finals, despite trailing at half
time (in a match voted the greatest in Goodison Park history) and recorded the same scoreline over
Austrian club Rapid Vienna in the final. Having also won the league title that season, Everton came very
close to winning a treble, but lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Arsenal London F.C.

Arsenal Football Club (also known as Arsenal or The Gunners) are an English professional football
club based in north London. They play in the FA Premier League and are one of the most successful clubs
in English football. Arsenal have won thirteen First Division and Premier League titles, ten FA Cups and
in 2005–06 became the first London club to reach the UEFA Champions League final. Arsenal are also
members of the G-14 group of leading European football clubs. Arsenal were founded in Woolwich,
south-east London, in 1886, but in 1913 they moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury.
In May 2006 they left Highbury, moving to their current home, the Emirates Stadium in nearby
Ashburton Grove, Holloway. Arsenal have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with neighbours Tottenham
Hotspur, located four miles away in Tottenham, whom they play in the North London derby.
Arsenal were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, but were
renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. They renamed themselves again to Woolwich Arsenal after
turning professional in 1891. The club joined the Football League in 1893, starting out in the Second
Division, and won promotion to the First Division in 1904. In 1913, soon after relegation back to the
Second Division, they moved across the Thames to the new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, north London.
They dropped "Woolwich" from their name the following year. Between 1930 and 1938, Arsenal won the
First Division five times and the FA Cup twice, although Chapman (manager) did not live to see all of
these achievements, as he died of pneumonia in 1934. Following the suspension of English professional
football during World War II, Arsenal won the league in 1948 and 1953 and the FA Cup in 1950.
After losing two League Cup finals, they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, their first European trophy, in
1970. This was followed by an even greater triumph: their first League and FA Cup double in 1971.
However, the following decade was characterised by a series of near misses. Arsenal finished as First
Division runners-up in 1973, lost three FA Cup finals (1972, 1978 and 1980) and lost the 1980 Cup
Winners' Cup final on penalties. The club's only success during this time was an FA Cup win in 1979,
with a last-minute 3–2 victory over Manchester United that is widely regarded as a classic. The return of
former player George Graham as manager in 1986 brought a third period of glory. Arsenal won the
League Cup in 1987, Graham's first season in charge. This was followed by a League title win in 1989,
won with a last-minute goal in the final game of the season against fellow title challengers Liverpool.
Graham's Arsenal won another title in 1991, losing only one match, the FA Cup and League Cup double
in 1993 and a second European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup, in 1994.
The club's success in the late 1990s and 2000s owes a great deal to the appointment of manager Arsène
Wenger in 1996. Wenger brought new tactics, a new training regime and several foreign players who
complemented the existing English talent. Arsenal won a second league and cup double in 1998 and a
third in 2002. In addition, the club reached the final of the 2000 UEFA Cup (losing on penalties to
Galatasaray), were victorious in the 2003 and 2005 FA Cups, and won the Premier League in 2004
without losing a single match, which earned the side the nickname "The Invincibles"; in all, the club went
49 league matches unbeaten, a national record.
Arsenal have finished in either first or second place in the league in eight of Wenger's ten seasons at the
club. They are one of only four teams (along with Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea) to
have won the Premier League since its formation in 1993, although they have failed to retain the title each
time they have been champions. Until recently, Arsenal had never progressed beyond the Champions
League quarter-finals; in 2005–06 however, they reached the competition's Final (the first club from
London to do so in the competition's fifty year history), but were beaten 2-1 by FC Barcelona.
Arsenal's tally of thirteen League Championships is the third highest in English football, after Liverpool
and Manchester United, while the total of ten FA Cups is the second highest, after Manchester United.
Arsenal have achieved three League and FA Cup "Doubles" (in 1971, 1998 and 2002), a joint record
shared with Manchester United, and were the first side in English football to complete the FA Cup and
League Cup double in 1993.

Liverpool F.C.
Liverpool Football Club is a football club based in Merseyside, in the north west of England. They play
at Anfield in the FA Premier League and are the most successful club in the history of English football.
Liverpool have won eighteen First Division titles, seven FA Cups, seven League Cups, five European
Cups and three UEFA Cups. Liverpool are also a member of the G-14 group of leading European football
clubs. The club was involved in two of the biggest tragedies in European football, at Heysel in 1985 when
thirty-nine spectators died, and at Hillsborough in 1989 where ninety-six people lost their lives. After
Heysel, English clubs were banned from European competition for a period of five years, and Liverpool
were excluded for six years. The Hillsborough tragedy led to a review of ground safety at all top English
league clubs, and paved the way for legislation necessitating all-seater stadiums in the top-flight.
Everton F.C. were founded 1878 and played at Anfield from 1884. In 1891 John Houlding, the
leaseholder of Anfield, purchased the ground outright and proposed increasing the rent from £100 to £250
a year. The Everton members objected, left Anfield and moved to Goodison Park. With an empty ground
and just three players remaining, Houlding decided to form his own football club and on 15 March 1892,
Liverpool Football Club was born. The original name was to be Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds, Ltd.,
or Everton Athletic for short, but was changed to Liverpool F.C. after The Football Association refused to
recognise the team as Everton.
Liverpool were elected to the Football League Second Division for the 1893–94 season. They ended the
season unbeaten as Second Division Champions, and were promoted to the First Division. In 1901,
Liverpool won their first Football League championship; a feat that was repeated in 1906. They played
their first FA Cup final in 1914, but lost 1-0 to Burnley. In 1921–22 and 1922–23 Liverpool won their
first back-to-back League titles, captained by England full-back Ephraim Longworth. This was only to be
followed by the longest barren spell in the club's history. It was felt that Liverpool might have recovered
in 1947 when they became Champions once again, but it proved to be a false dawn, and in 1954
Liverpool were relegated. The years 1954-59 were the nadir for Liverpool, when the team languished in
League Division Two (the old second level of professional football in England) and had no success in the
F.A. Cup. Having started the 1960s in the Second division, Liverpool would end that decade as a major
domestic power. In 1964, Liverpool lifted the League Championship for the first time in seventeen years.
They were League Champions again in 1966, having won their first ever FA Cup in the previous season,
beating Leeds United 2-1 in the final.
Liverpool had won their eighth league title and defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach to win their first
European trophy, the UEFA Cup, in 1973. Liverpool's first European Cup was won in 1977. The final
was played in Rome, and Liverpool defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1. The next year Liverpool
would retain the trophy, beating Club Brugge 1-0 in the European Cup final at Wembley, and in 1979 the
club broke another record winning the league title with sixty-eight points and only sixteen goals conceded
in forty-two matches. Paisley's third and last European Cup victory came in 1981 with a 1-0 victory in the
final over Real Madrid. In 1985 Liverpool again reached the European Cup final. The match was to be
played at Heysel Stadium but, before kick-off, disaster struck Liverpool fans breached a fence separating
the two groups of supporters and charged Juventus fans causing a retaining wall to collapse, killing thirty-
nine Juventus fans. The match was played regardless and Liverpool lost 1-0 to Juventus.
In 1985 Kenny Dalglish, already idolised as perhaps Liverpool's greatest player, became Liverpool's first
player-manager. His reign would see the club win another three League Championships and another two
FA Cups including a double in 1985/86 at Everton's expense. His initial season in charge saw the club
winning the league title and beating arch rivals Everton 3-1 in the FA Cup final to become only the third
team to win the league championship/FA Cup double in the 20th century (after Spurs in 1961 and Arsenal
in 1971). 2000–01 was Liverpool's best season for many years as the team completed a unique treble of
the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.
Spaniard Rafael Benítez took over and in his first season Liverpool finished a disappointing fifth in the
Premier League. The season had a surprising ending, however, as Liverpool won their fifth European Cup
final in Istanbul. The Reds met the heavily favoured Italian club A.C. Milan in an astonishing final.
Liverpool trailed 3-0 at half time and looked much the poorer side over the first 45 minutes, but they
made a dramatic comeback by scoring three goals in a period of only six minutes in the second half,
forcing extra time. Liverpool went on to win the penalty shoot-out thanks to goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
Liverpool's tally of eighteen Football League championships is a record for English clubs, their nearest
challenger being Manchester United with fifteen. Liverpool have also achieved the League and FA Cup
"Double" in 1986 and two "Trebles". The first treble of League, League Cup and European Cup was
achieved in 1984 (the first English club to win three major competitions in a single season) and a second
treble was achieved in 2001 with the winning of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup. Liverpool's
total of five European Cups is an English record and the third highest total overall, after Real Madrid and
A.C. Milan. The fifth victory in 2005 entitled Liverpool to receive the UEFA badge of honour, thus
allowing them to keep the trophy permanently. Liverpool's total of three UEFA Cups is a record for
English clubs and also ties the overall record with Inter Milan and Juventus. The tallies of seven League
Cups and three European Super Cups are also English records.

West Ham United F.C.
West Ham United F.C. are a football club based in Upton Park, Newham, East London and play their
home matches at The Boleyn Ground. They are currently in the English Premier League.
The team enjoyed 10 consecutive top flight seasons from 1993 to 2003 prior to relegation to The
Championship. They have won the FA Cup three times: in 1964, 1975 and 1980, and also captured the
now defunct Cup Winners Cup in 1965 and the Intertoto Cup in 1999, but have never won the League
Championship, best position: 3rd in the 1985-86 season. The club returned to the Premier League in 2005
and achieved a 9th place finish. In addition the club progressed through to the FA Cup Final for the first
time in twenty-six years where they lost on penalties to Liverpool F.C. after a 3-3 draw.
The club was founded in 1895 as the works side Thames Ironworks F.C. by Thames Ironworks and
Shipbuilding Co. Ltd company chairman Arnold Hills and foreman Dave Taylor. They turned
professional upon entering the Southern League Second Division in 1898, which they won at the first
attempt. In June 1900, Thames Ironworks was wound up, but was immediately relaunched on July 5,
1900 as West Ham United Football Club
West Ham United first established themselves in 1964, when manager Ron Greenwood guided the club to
their first major trophy in the shape of an FA Cup final victory over Preston North End. The success of
1964 was repeated a year later, this time with a European Cup Winners Cup triumph over 1860 Munich at
Wembley. West Ham marched to another FA Cup success in 1975 and to another UEFA Cup Winners'
Cup final (1975-76). But this time West Ham were on the losing side. 2 years later in 1978 and the club
were relegated to the Second Division. They won a second FA Cup victory under Lyall's leadership
whilst still in Division 2 in 1980 (no side outside the top division has achieved that since). This time the
win was over another London club, the much-fancied Arsenal F.C. This remains West Ham's most recent
major trophy. In 1981, West Ham finished runners-up in the League Cup.
The next manager to occupy the hot seat at West Ham was Billy Bonds, whose first season at the helm
(1990-91) ended with runners-up spot in the Second Division and a place back in the top division. But
West Ham struggled throughout the 1991-92 season and were relegated in bottom place, missing the first
season of the new Premier League. West Ham regained their top flight status at the first attempt, finishing
Division One runners-up in 1992-93 and securing promotion to the Premiership. They survived relegation
by a comfortable margin in 1993-94, but Bonds walked out on the club the following summer to be
succeeded by Harry Redknapp. West Ham avoided relegation again in 1994-95 and played their part in
the final-day drama of the season, holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Upton Park and denying
them a third successive Premiership title. By the end of 1998/99 West Ham had achieved an impressive
5th place finish. But, for the only time in league history, were denied a UEFA Cup place due to new
UEFA Coefficients. (The seasons to either side had seen every team down to 7th feature in the UEFA
Cup.) The team instead was entered as one of England's Inter-Toto cup competitors (and a place in the
UEFA Cup proper up for grabs). A victory over Metz in the two-legged final eventually earned the
Hammers a place in the UEFA Cup - ending an absence of almost 20 years from European competition.
The highlight of the 2005-06 season, was reaching the FA Cup final, and taking favourites Liverpool to a
penalty shootout where they lost, but gained entry to the UEFA Cup as Liverpool had qualified for the
Champions League through league position.

Leeds United A.F.C.

Leeds United Association Football Club are the only professional association football club in the city of
Leeds. The club was established in 1919, following the demise of Leeds City F.C. The club's nicknames
are "Leeds", "United" or "The Whites".They play play their home games at the Elland Road stadium.
Leeds rose to prominence under the management of Don Revie during the 1960s and 1970s, when they
won a host of major trophies and were one of the most feared sides in Europe. Leeds got their white home
kit in the 1960s when Revie decided to make the team more impressive, adopting the colours of the
Spanish giant Real Madrid so that they both played like and looked like the Spanish team. Revie's
departure for the England job spelled the end of an era for Leeds and they were relegated to the Second
Division in 1982, not regaining their top flight status until 1990, by which time they were being managed
by Howard Wilkinson. Leeds were league champions in 1992, but this title triumph is their most recent
major trophy. In 2004, a financial crisis saw Leeds slip out of the Premiership and they are currently in
their third successive season outside the top flight after being beaten 3-0 by Watford in the play-off final
of the 2005-06 season.
Leeds United's predecessor club, Leeds City F.C., was formed in 1904 by the committee and supporters.
It was forcibly disbanded by The Football League in 1919 in response to allegations of financial
irregularities regarding illegal payments to players during the First World War. Shortly after the collapse
of Leeds City, a new club, Leeds United, was formed and, shortly afterwards, began playing in the
Midland League, taking the place vacated by Leeds City's reserve team. Over the following few years,
Leeds consolidated their position in the Second Division and in 1924 won the Second Division title with
54 points. However, they failed to establish themselves in the first division and were relegated in 1927. In
the years up until the start of World War II Leeds were twice relegated and instantly re-promoted the
following season. In the first official season after the war, Leeds were relegated with the worst league
record in their history. They remained in the Second Division for a further nine seasons until 1955-56,
when Leeds once again won promotion to the First Division.
Under Revie Leeds won promotion to Division 1 in the 1963-64 season; two league championships,
1968-69 (losing only two games) and 1973-74, when the team went an incredible 34 games undefeated;
the League Cup in 1968; the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971; the FA Cup in 1972; and FA
Charity Shield in 1969. In 1992 Leeds won the final old First Division championship (1991-92). They
also won the Charity Shield 4-3 against Liverpool in 1992.
Leeds reached their first European semi-final in 25 years and were paired against Turkish champions
Galatasaray, notorious for their fanatical support. Another dark moment in Leeds’ history was around the
corner when two Leeds United fans, were brutally stabbed to death before the game in Istanbul. Leeds
lost 2-0. The return leg in Leeds had the most charged, emotional yet poisonous atmosphere. The game
saw Harry Kewell sent off and a 2-2 score was not enough for Leeds, as they went out of the competition.
Following their appearance in the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Valencia Leeds' fortunes
started to change. Along with the team not performing as the loans required, Leeds slipped further and
further into debt. The team continued to struggle on the field and were eventually relegated in 2004, after
14 years in the top flight. From the 2007/08 season they play in League One (third level).

West Bromwich Albion F.C.

West Bromwich Albion Football Club is an English football club that was formed in 1878 by workers
from Salter's Spring Works in West Bromwich (then in Staffordshire, now part of the West Midlands).
Commonly called West Brom, or W.B.A., less commonly Albion.
The club reached the FA Cup final for the first time in 1886, just eight years after its foundation, but
ended as runners-up. They repeated this achievement the following year, but in 1888 it was third time
lucky as Albion won this prestigious trophy for the first time. This, if nothing else, made them an
automatic choice to be one of the twelve founder members of the Football League which was established
later that year. They won their only league title in 1920, but to date they have won the FA Cup five times.
The most recent occasion was in 1968 when they beat Everton thanks to a single goal from iconic centre-
forward Jeff Astle. They also won the Football League Cup at the first attempt in 1966, beating West
Ham United in the last two-legged final. Albion's most memorable times of more recent years came under
the management of Ron Atkinson in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when they qualified for the UEFA
Cup twice and on one occasion reached the quarter final. Atkinson's team won widespread approval for
its attractive, attacking style of football, and also for its pioneering selection of players of Afro-Caribbean
origins, but material success in the form of trophies eluded it. Since the 1980s Albion have failed to
maintain even this relatively modest level of success. From 1986 to 2002 they spent their longest ever
period out of the top division, and although there has been a promising revival in recent years (three
seasons being spent in the Premiership between 2002 and 2006). They are currently playing in the
Football League Championship. In 2008/09 they played in Premiership, but were relegated next year.
The 1968 FA Cup win is still their most recent major trophy to date.

Manchester City F.C.

Manchester City Football Club is an English football club based in the city of Manchester. Formed in
1880 as West Gorton (St. Marks), it went on to become Ardwick A.F.C. in 1887 before finally
becoming Manchester City F.C. in 1894. The club has won the League Championship twice, the FA Cup
four times, the League Cup twice and the European Cup Winners Cup once. Manchester City's most
successful period came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it acquired several trophies.
In more recent years, the club has fallen on harder times, and has not won a major honour since 1976. The
club's decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, meaning it spent one year (1998/99) in
the third tier of English football. However, the club has since regained its FA Premier League status,
putting City back in the top flight (2002/03), the division in which it spent the majority of its history. The
club enjoys a large fanbase, regularly attracting more than 40,000 fans to its home ground, the City of
Manchester Stadium.
City gained their first honours by winning the Second Division in 1899; with it came promotion to
highest level in English football, the First Division. They went on to claim their first major honour on 23
April 1904, beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup; City narrowly missed out
on a League and Cup double that season after finishing runners-up in the League. A fire at Hyde Road
destroyed the main stand in 1920, and in 1923 the club moved to Maine Road in Moss Side.
In the 1930s Manchester City reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing to Everton in 1933, before
claiming the Cup by beating Portsmouth in 1934. The club won the First Division title for the first time in
1937, but were relegated the following season, despite scoring more goals than any other team in the
division. 20 years later, a City team inspired by a tactical system known as the Revie Plan reached
consecutive FA Cup finals again, in 1955 and 1956; just as in the 1930s, they lost the first one and won
the second. The 1956 final, in which Manchester City beat Birmingham City 3-1, is one of the most
famous finals of all-time, and is remembered for City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann continuing to play on
after breaking his neck. After relegation to the Second Division in 1963, the future looked bleak, but City
won the Second Division title. Two seasons later, in 1967-68, Manchester City claimed the League
Championship for the second time, clinching the title on the final day of the season with a 4-3 win at
Newcastle United. Further trophies followed: City won the FA Cup in 1969, before achieving European
success by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970, beating Górnik Zabrze 2-1 in Vienna. City
also won the League Cup that season, becoming the first English team to win a European trophy and a
domestic trophy in the same season. The club continued to challenge for honours throughout the 1970s,
finishing just one point behind the league champions on two occasions and reaching the final of the 1974
League Cup. The final trophy of the club's most successful period was won in 1976, when Newcastle
United were beaten 2-1 in the League Cup final.
City reached the 1981 FA Cup final but lost in a replay to Tottenham Hotspur. The club were twice
relegated from the top flight in the 1980s (in 1983 and 1987), but recovered to finish fifth in Division One
twice in succession but Manchester City's fortunes continued to fade. City members were founders of the
Premier League upon its creation in 1992, but were relegated to Division One in 1996. After two seasons
in Division One, City fell to the lowest point in their history, becoming the first ever European trophy
winners to be relegated to English football's third tier. The 2002-03 season was the last at Maine Road,
and included a 3-1 derby victory over Manchester rivals Manchester United, ending a run of 13 years
without a derby win. City also qualified for the UEFA Cup through the "Fair Play ranking", earning the
club's first entry into European competition in 25 years. In the 2003 close season the club moved to the
new City of Manchester Stadium, a stadium renowned for having the brightest floodlights in the English
Football League. The 2005-06 season started brightly for Manchester City; however, form deteriorated in
the second half of the season, and the club finished 15th, and continued their 31 year search of a trophy.

Newcastle United F.C.
Newcastle United Football Club is an English professional football team based in Newcastle upon Tyne,
nicknamed the "Magpies". The team was formed in 1892 after the merger of two local clubs, Newcastle
East and Newcastle West and currently plays at St James' Park, the old Newcastle West ground in the
city.
Newcastle United then went on to lift the League Championship on three occasions, 1905, 1907 and
1909, although the 1908-09 season also saw them record what is still a record home defeat in the top
flight of English football, 9-1 to rivals Sunderland, who count the result as their record win. They also
reached five FA Cup Finals in seven years (winning only in 1910 against Barnsley FC in a replay at
Goodison Park away from the regular FA Cup Venue of Crystal Palace) leading up to World War I in
1914. They won the League a fourth time in 1927. During the 1950s, United lifted the FA Cup trophy on
three occasions within a five year period. In 1951 they defeated Blackpool 2-0, a year later Arsenal were
beaten 1-0 and in 1955 United defeated Manchester City 3-1.
Newcastle qualified for Europe for the first time in 1968 and surprised many the following year by lifting
the Inter Cities Fairs Cup; which two years later evolved into the UEFA Cup beating the likes of Sporting
Lisbon, Feynoord and Real Zaragoza along the way before triumphing over two legs against the
Hungarians Újpesti Dózsa in the final.
By the start of the 1980s, United had declined dramatically and were languishing in the Second Division.
The 1995-6 season would see the team come close to winning the FA Premier League. Despite being
twelve points ahead of their nearest rivals, Manchester United, Newcastle would go on a terrible run of
form and lose out. Keegan resigned in 1997 and was replaced by Kenny Dalglish, who it was felt would
help solidify the team defensively. In their first season under his guidance, Newcastle entered the
Champions League, and reached the 1998 FA Cup Final only to fall to a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal. Ruud
Gullit, mostly famous for being a trophy winning manager with Chelsea a few years previously, was put
in charge promising to bring back 'sexy football' to Newcastle. The team again started promisingly, and
reached the FA Cup final that season. Over the next few seasons Robson built up an exciting young
squad. Players such as Kieron Dyer (a Gullit signing), Craig Bellamy and Laurent Robert ensured the
team were capable of once again punching their weight in the league. An unlikely Championship
challenge almost emerged in the last few weeks of the 2002/2003 season, and Newcastle achieved
qualification for the lucrative Champions' League. In 2009 they relegated from the FA Premier League.

Southampton F.C.
Southampton Football Club (originally St Mary's YMA) are an English football team, nicknamed The
Saints. Based in the city of Southampton in Hampshire, the team was formed in November 1885. In 1898
the team moved into The Dell, the ground which was to be their home for over 100 years. However, as a
result of a limited stadium capacity, the team moved to St Mary's Stadium in 2001. The current stadium is
more than double the size of its predecessor, and has staged England internationals.
Their finest hour was their FA Cup win in 1976, when they beat Manchester United 1-0. They also were
the runners-up in 2003 against Arsenal and runners-up in the 1979 League Cup final against Nottingham
Forest. Southampton also finished runners-up in the Football League Championship to Liverpool in
1983/84.
Southampton reached their first F.A Cup final in 1900, losing to Bury, but had to wait until 1976 to win
the trophy - beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley. In 1984 they finished second in the league to
claim their highest-ever league finish. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and
competed in its first 13 seasons before finally being relegated in 2005. From the 2009/10 season they play

Coventry City Football Club, otherwise known as the Sky Blues owing to the traditional colour of their
strip, is an English football club based in Coventry, UK. Coventry City were founding members of the FA
Premier League in 1992. They currently play in the Coca-Cola Championship, the second-highest tier of
the English league system. Between 1967 and 2001, a period of 34 years, they were continuously
members of England's top division although they never finished higher than sixth (1969/70). At the time
of their eventual relegation, only Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton could claim to have amassed a longer
tenure in top-flight English football than Coventry. Their only major trophy came in 1987 when they beat
Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 to win the FA Cup, whilst they also reached two League Cup semi-finals in 1981
and 1990.
When originally founded in 1883 by the employees of a cycle manufacturer, the club was known by the
name of that company, Singers (a local firm). Ten years later, the club turned professional after a very
successful season (1891-92) in which three separate cups were won (The Birmingham Cup, The
Wednesbury Cup and The Walsall Cup). In 1898, the club was renamed Coventry City just prior to a
move to new playing fields on the site of Highfield Road in the Hillfields district of the city, the stadium
they called home for the next 106 years.
In 1970-71, manager Noel Cantwell led Coventry into their only European campaign to date. They played
in the European Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (renamed the UEFA Cup the following season), beating Bulgarian
side Trakia Plovdiv 6-1 on aggregate in the first round. In the second round they notably beat Bayern
Munich (a team that included a young Franz Beckenbauer) 2-1 in the home leg, but lost 3-7 on aggregate.
In 1987 they won the FA Cup, deservedly beating an impressive Tottenham Hotspur side 3-2 in the final
after extra time, the score having been 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Stoke City F.C.
Stoke City Football Club is a football club based in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Stoke is the second-oldest
Football League club in the world, as it was founded in 1863. The best moment in the First Division came
in 1946-47, Stoke mounted a serious title challenge. The club needed a win in their final game of the
season to win the First Division title, however a 2–1 to Sheffield United defeat meant the title went to
Liverpool F.C. instead and finished fourth (best place, also achieved in 1936). Stoke's first major trophy
was won in the 1972 League Cup Final, when Stoke beat Chelsea F.C. 2-1 with goals from Terry Conroy,
who is now employed at the club - and George Eastham who now lives in South Africa.
Stoke have not participated in the top flight, the Premier League, since the 1984-85 season when they
were relegated with a total of 17 points, which would be a record low tally for twenty-one years. The club
played in the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football till 2008 when they were
preomoted to FA Premier League. They finished on 12th place in 2008/09 season.

Derby County
Derby County Football Club is an English football club based in Derby. The club was formed in 1884
as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. On 16 April 1898, Derby appeared in their first FA
Cup final at Crystal Palace, but lost 3-1. They were losing finalists again in 1899 and 1903.
In the 1945-1946 season Derby got to the final of the FA Cup and won by beating Charlton Athletic 4-1
after extra time. The League restarted the following season after a break due to World War II, but Derby
could not reproduce their pre-War form and were relegated in 1953. In 1955 they were relegated to the
Third Division North for the first time in their history. In 1967, Brian Clough took over and led them to
their greatest glory. Derby were promoted to the First Division in 1969, finished fourth in 1970, got
banned from competing in Europe due to financial irregularities in 1971, and won their first ever Football
League Championship in 1972. Though Derby did not retain their title the following season, they did
reach the semi-finals of the European Cup. They lost to Juventus in a controversial match which was
subject to subsequent allegations that the Italian club had bribed the match officials, leading Clough, to
call the Italians "cheating bastards". Derby's League success was repeated in 1974–1975 season when
they won the title. However, Derby's form declined towards the end of the 1970s and they went down to
the Second Division in 1980. Though they challenged well in their first season, Derby's stay in the
Second Division was not a happy one and they were relegated to the Third Division in 1984. After a two
year stint in the Third Division, Cox's emerging side were promoted to the Second Division and won it at
the first attempt, returning to the old First Division in 1987. The club finished fifth in the 1988-1989
season, with the team now containing stars like Peter Shilton, Mark Wright, Dean Saunders and Ted
McMinn. However, English clubs were banned from European competition at the time following the
Heysel Stadium Disaster, so the Rams missed out on their place in the UEFA Cup. The club was
relegated back to the Second Division in 1991 and once again in 2002. They played in Premier League in
the 2007-2008 season, but were relegated, so from 2008/09 they play in the Championship.

Sunderland A.F.C.
Sunderland Association Football Club is a professional association football team based in Sunderland,
Tyne and Wear, in North-East England. They play in the Premier League and are one of the most
successful clubs in English football, reached the First Division in 1890 and over the next 50 years were
league champions six times and having won two FA Cups. They moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997
after 99 years at Roker Park.
Before the Second World War, Sunderland were league champions six times - in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902,
1913, and most recently in 1936, when they became the last team wearing striped shirts to win the league.
They were elected into the football league in 1890, becoming the first team to join after the league's birth
in 1888. Sunderland stayed in the top flight until 1958, a record which only Arsenal have bettered since,
in 1992. The club won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3-1 victory over Preston North End.
Sunderland's major triumph post World War II was the club's second FA Cup victory in 1973, when the
club secured a 1-0 victory over Leeds United thanks to an Ian Porterfield goal and a terrific double save
from Jimmy Montgomery (who has the record number of appearances for Sunderland). They reached the
final of the League Cup in 1985, in which they were beaten 1-0 by Norwich City.
Were relegated from the First Division for the first time in 1958, making 68 consecutive seasons spent in
the English top league, still the second highest total in English football. Since then though, they have
struggled to establish themselves back in the top flight. Played their first Premiership season in 1996-97,
which ended in relegation on the final day of the season. Returned to the Premiership in 1999 and finished
seventh in both of their first two seasons back at the highest level. Were relegated from the Premiership in
2003 with a record low of four wins, 21 goals and 19 points.
They returned to the Premiership in 2005/2006 season, but went down after just one season, breaking
their own record by attaining just 3 wins and 15 points. They then returned to England's top flight after a
successful 2006/07 season in the Championship, winning it under the leadership of manager Roy Keane.

Aston Villa F.C. Birmingham

Aston Villa Football Club (also known as The Villa) is an English professional football club based in
Aston, Birmingham, who currently play in the Premier League. The club was founded in 1874 and have
played at their current home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. Aston Villa were founding members of the
Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992.
They are one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in England, having won the First Division
Championship seven times and the FA Cup seven times. Villa are also one of only four English clubs to
win the European Cup, which they did in 1982. Aston Villa is the fourth most successful club in English
football history, having won 21 major honours, although most of these were won before the Second
World War and the most recent was in 1996.
The club won its first FA Cup in 1887 and was one of the dozen teams that competed in the inaugural
Football League in 1888. Aston Villa emerged as the most successful English club of the Victorian era,
with numerous League titles and FA Cup wins. In 1897, the year Villa won The Double, they moved into
their present home, the Villa Park, which came about through fan usage.
Aston Villa won their sixth FA Cup in 1920, soon after though the club began a slow decline that led to
Villa, at the time one of the most famous and successful clubs in world football, being relegated in 1936
for the first time to the Second Division. Aston Villa's first trophy for 37 years came in the 1956–57
season which saw them go on an unexpected FA Cup run that would culminate in them defeating the
'Busby Babes' of Manchester United in the final. The team were relegated though two seasons later, in
1958–59, and a complacency had set in at Villa Park. This was soon vanquished though as Villa returned
to the top flight in 1960 as Second Division Champions and the following season Villa won the inaugural
League Cup. New ownership though could not prevent Villa being relegated to the Third Division for the
first time at the end of the 1969–70 season. In the 1971–72 season they returned to the second division as
Champions with a record 70 points. In 1973 Ron Saunders was appointed manager and by 1977 he had
taken them back into the First Division and Europe.
Villa were back amongst the elite and they continued to have much success under Saunders, winning the
league in the 1980–81 season. To the surprise of commentators and fans, Saunders quit halfway through
the 1981–82 season, after falling out with the chairman, with Villa in the quarter final of the European
Cup. He was replaced by his softly-spoken assistant manager Tony Barton who guided them to 1–0
victory over Bayern Munich in the European Cup final in Rotterdam. Villa remain to this day one of only
four English teams to have won the European Cup, along with Liverpool, Manchester United and
Nottingham Forest. This marked a pinnacle though and Villa declined for most of the 1980s culminating
in relegation in 1987. This was followed by promotion the following year and second place in the football
League in 1989/90. Villa were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992, and finished
runners-up to Manchester United in the inaugural season. For the rest of the nineties though Villa went
through three different managers and their league positions were inconsistent, although they did win two
League Cups. Villa reached the FA Cup final in 2000 (for the first time since 1957) but lost 1–0 to
Chelsea in the last game to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.

Queens Park Rangers F.C. London

Queens Park Rangers Football Club is an English football club, from Shepherds Bush in the London
Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in West London. The club's first team currently plays in the
Football League Championship. The club is commonly referred to as "QPR" or often just "Rangers" by
fans.
QPR was formed in 1882, when a team known as St Jude's merged with Christchurch Rangers. The
resulting team was called Queens Park Rangers, because most of the players came from the Queens Park
area of North-West London. In 1966-67, QPR won the Division Three championship and became the first
Third Division club to win the League Cup on Saturday, March 4, 1967, beating West Bromwich Albion
3-2, (coming back from a two goal deficit). 40 years on, it is still the only major trophy that QPR have
won. They won promotion again the following year, reaching the top flight for the first time in their
history, but were relegated after just one season. In 1975-76 Dave Sexton led them to the runners-up spot
in the First Division, missing out on the Championship by a single point. QPR were unable to recreate
their wonderful league form in 1976-77 but the cup competitions saw some success. The side reached the
semi-finals of the League Cup but lost in a replay to Aston Villa and in their first entry into European
football reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup losing to AEK Athens FC on penalties. In 1982 QPR
reached the FA Cup Final for the only time in the club's history, facing holders and London rivals
Tottenham Hotspur. The first game ended 1-1 after extra time and so for the second year running the
Final was to be decided by a replay. Tottenham won the replay 1-0 with the only goal coming from a
Glenn Hoddle penalty in the 6th minute. The cup exploits probably accounted for QPR missing out on
promotion that season. The most successful season during this period was the 1987-88 in which QPR
finished fifth. QPR was relegated at the end of the 1995-96 season. They played three seasons between
2001-2004 in League One. From 2004/05 season they play in Championship.

Watford F.C.
Watford Football Club are an English professional football club based in Watford, Hertfordshire. As of
the 2007-08 season, they play in the Championship, having been relegated from the Premiership in 2006-
07. The club was founded in 1881, first playing at Cassio Road ground, before moving to Vicarage Road
in 1922, where they remain to this day.
The club is best known for its two spells under the management of former England manager Graham
Taylor. The first lasting from 1977 to 1987, when the club rose to the old Division One from Division
Four, also reaching the FA Cup final in 1984 and competing in the UEFA Cup. The second lasting from
1997 to 2001, when Taylor took the club from Division Two to the Premiership in successive seasons.
During both of these eras the club was owned by Elton John, who is now the club's honorary life
president. Watford had reached the First Division by the start of the 1982–83 season. Watford finished
their first top flight season as runners-up behind champions Liverpool. The club competed in the UEFA
cup the following season and an FA Cup final appearance followed in 1984, although Watford lost to
Everton. The Hornets suffered a terrible start to the 1987-88 season and were relegated from the First
Division at the end of that season. The next season, 1988-89, Watford failed to return to the First Division
after they lost Second Division playoffs. Over the next few seasons, Watford never seriously challenged
for promotion. A second successive promotion followed in 1998-99, thanks to a playoff final victory over
Bolton which secured the club's promotion to the Premiership. The Premiership season started brightly
with an early surprising victory over Liverpool, but soon faded away, and Watford were relegated after
finishing bottom. In the 2006/07 season played once again in the Premiership, but Watford only recorded
five wins, and sat at the bottom of the league table. However, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup,
where they lost to Manchester United. Despite drawing 1-1 with Manchester City, Watford were
relegated on 21 April 2007.

Norwich City F.C.

Norwich City Football Club (also known as The Canaries) is an English professional football club
based in Norwich, Norfolk. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992–93, and played
in its first three seasons reaching the UEFA Cup 3rd Round, returning for one season in 2004–05. They
first won promotion to the Football League First Division in 1972, and have played a total of 18 seasons
in the top flight, with a longest continuous spell of nine seasons. Norwich have won the League Cup
twice, in 1962 and 1985. The club was founded in 1902. Since 1935, Norwich have played their home
games at Carrow Road and have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with East Anglian neighbours Ipswich
Town, with whom they have contested the East Anglian Derby 137 times, winning 51 since 1902.
The 1984–85 season was of mixed fortunes for the club; they reached the final of the Milk Cup at
Wembley Stadium. In the final, they beat Sunderland 1–0, but in the league both Norwich and Sunderland
were relegated to the second tier of English football. Norwich were also denied their first foray into
Europe with the ban on English clubs after the Heysel Stadium disaster. City bounced back to the top
flight immediately by winning the Second Division championship in the 1985–86 season. High league
placings in the First Division in 1986–87 and 1988–89 would have been enough for UEFA Cup
qualification, but the ban on English clubs remained. They also had good cup runs during his period,
reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1989 and again in 1992. In 1992–93, the inaugural season of the
English Premier League, Norwich City led the league for most of the season, before faltering in the final
weeks to finish third (best position till now) behind the champions, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.
The following season Norwich played in the UEFA Cup for the first time, losing in the third round to
Internazionale, but defeating Bayern Munich. The club were relegated to the First Division in 1994/95
season. The 2003–04 campaign saw the club win the First Division title, finishing eight points clear of
second-placed West Bromwich Albion and returned to the top flight for the first time since 1995, but a
poor season next year, condemned them to relegation.
From 2005 Norwich played in the Football League Championship (second tier of the English football
pyramid), but in the 2008/09 they relegated in League One (third level).

Blackburn Rovers F.C.

Blackburn Rovers Football Club is an English Premier League football club based in the town of
Blackburn, Lancashire. It is one of only three teams to be founder members of both the Football League
and the Premier League, the others being Aston Villa and Everton. Blackburn Rovers Football Club was
established in 1875, and in 1888 became a founding member of The Football League. In 1890 Rovers
moved to its permanent home at Ewood Park. Until the formation of the Premier League in 1992, the
majority of the club's success was pre-1930 when they won the league and FA Cup on several occasions.
Their relegation in 1966 was followed by 26 successive seasons of football outside the top flight.
In 1992, Blackburn were promoted to the new Premier League a year after being taken over by local steel
baron Jack Walker, who installed Kenny Dalglish as manager. In 1995, Blackburn became league
champions, having spent millions of pounds on players like Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton. However, the
title-winning team was quickly split up and, in 1999, the club were relegated. They were promoted back
to the Premiership two years later, just after Walker's death, and have been in the top flight ever since.
During this time they have qualified for the UEFA Cup four times: once as League Cup winners, twice as
the Premiership's sixth-placed team and once via the Intertoto Cup.

Fulham F.C. London

Fulham Football Club is an English professional football club based in Fulham, in the London Borough
of Hammersmith and Fulham. Founded in 1879 as Fulham St Andrew's Church Sunday School, they
celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2004, and they are in the top tier of English football, the FA Premier
League. Fulham are the oldest professional football team in London, usually considered to have been
founded in 1879 (though the semi-professional Cray Wanderers F.C. are the oldest team in London still in
existence). They spent much time in the old First Division through the 1960s, but are yet to gain any
major honours. In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in
their history, losing 2–0 to West Ham United. Fulham qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2002 by winning
the Intertoto Cup, beating Bologna 5–3 in the final over two legs. In the UEFA Cup, they won through
two rounds before being defeated by Hertha Berlin. In the mid-1990s they had a brief spell in the former
Fourth Division, but they recovered spectacularly by the early 2000s.
Promotion to the top tier of English football in 1949 saw the club perform poorly, finishing 17th in their
first year and 18th in their second. In only their third season of First Division football, Fulham finished
rock bottom of the 22-team league in the 1951-52 season, winning only 8 of 42 games. From 2001 they
play in Premier League, best position the 7th place in 2008/09 season.

Millwall F.C. London
Millwall Football Club is an English football team based at The Den, in Bermondsey, South East
London. They currently play in Football League One (third level). The team was founded in 1885,
nickname is The Lions, previously, The Dockers. They changed the nickname after being referred to as
"Lions" for their acts of giant killing in their FA Cup run of 1900, when they reached the semi final. They
also reached the semi final in 1903, and 1937, while they went one better and reached the final in 2004,
losing to Manchester United.
In 1988, Millwall surprised observers by winning the Second Division championship and gained
promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time in their history. Millwall had been the
only professional team in London never to have played in the top flight. Millwall's first top division
season ended with a tenth place finish, which was the lowest place occupied by the club all season, but
were relegated in bottom place at the end of the 1989-90 campaign. In 2001, the club won promotion as
Division Two champions after five years in the lower tier of the league. They played the Cup final on
May 22, 2004, losing 3–0 to Manchester United. As Manchester United had already qualified for the
Champions League, Millwall were assured of playing in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup. They were only the
second team from outside the top flight to play in the final since 1982, and were the first team from
outside the Premiership to reach the final since its foundation in 1992. In the 2004/05 UEFA Cup,
Millwall lost 4–2 on aggregate in the first round proper, to Hungarian Champions Ferencváros, with Wise
scoring both Millwall goals. Millwall experienced a very difficult season, possibly as a consequence of
having had no fewer than four managers in 2005. Their relegation to League One was confirmed on
Monday 17 April 2006 with a 2–0 loss against Southampton.

Middlesbrough F.C.
Middlesbrough Football Club, also known as 'The Boro', are an English football club based in
Middlesbrough. Formed in 1876, they have played at the Riverside Stadium since August 1995, their
third ground since turning professional in 1889. The club's highest league finish to date was third in the
1913–14 season and they have only spent two seasons outside of the Football League's top two divisions.
Middlesbrough were controversially deducted three points for failing to fulfil a fixture against Blackburn
Rovers during the 1996–97 Premier League season and were subsequently relegated. They were
promoted the following season and played eleventh consecutive season in the top division, but relegated
from Premier League in 2009, so from 2009/10 season they play in Championship.
Middlesbrough won the League Cup in 2004, the club's first and only major trophy. This success also
ensured that Middlesbrough would qualify for Europe — the UEFA Cup — for the first time, in which
they reached the last 16. UEFA cup qualification was achieved for the second consecutive year (finished
7th) after a dramatic 1–1 away draw with Manchester City thanks to a late penalty save from Mark
Schwarzer in the last game of the 2004/05 season.
On 27 April 2006, Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven, following two comebacks
from 3–0 down. However, the team lost 4–0 to Sevilla.

Bolton Wanderers F.C.

Bolton Wanderers Football Club is an English professional football club based in Horwich, in the
Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. They are currently in the Premier League.
The club was founded by the Reverend John Farrall Wright in 1874 as Christ Church FC, but changed
its name to Bolton Wanderers in 1877. Bolton were one of the 12 founder members of the Football
League, which formed in 1888, finished in 5th place that first championship edition (their best position
was the third place in 1892, 1921 and 1925). Bolton have spent the highest number of seasons in the top
flight without winning the title (the current season, 2008-09, is their 70th in the top flight).
In 1894 Bolton reached the final of football's oldest competition, the FA Cup, for the first time, but lost
4–1 to Notts County at Goodison Park. A decade later they were runners-up a second time, losing 1–0 to
local rivals Manchester City at Crystal Palace on 23 April 1904.[4] On 28 April, 1923 Bolton won the cup
at their third attempt to win their first major trophy, beating West Ham United 2–0 in the first ever
Wembley final. Bolton were a successful cup side in the 1920s, winning the FA Cup three times. They
became the most successful cup side of the twenties, also winning in 1926 and 1929, beating Manchester
City and Portsmouth respectively.
From 1935 to 1964, Bolton enjoyed an uninterrupted stay in the top flight – regarded by fans as a golden
era, spearheaded in the 1950s by Nat Lofthouse. They would not return to the top flight until 1978, where
they lasted but two seasons before a period of further decline set in. In 1953 Bolton played in one of the
most famous FA Cup finals of all time - The Stanley Matthews Final of 1953. Bolton lost the game to
Blackpool 4-3 after throwing away a 3-1 lead. The club won the cup a fourth time in 1958 thanks to two
Nat Lofthouse goals. A leaner spell followed, reaching a nadir in 1987 when the club spent a season in the
Fourth Division. The closest they have come to winning a major trophy since then is finishing runners-up
in the League Cup, first in 1995 and again in 2004. The club regained top-flight status in 1995 after a 15
year absence; their current spell in the top division started in 2001. Bolton reached the League Cup final
in 2004, but lost to Middlesbrough. Nevertheless, Bolton finished eighth in the league, at the time their
highest finish in their Premiership history. In 2005 Bolton finished sixth in the league, thus earning
qualification for the UEFA Cup for the first time in their history.
In 2005–06 they participated in European competition for the first time, reaching the last 32 of the UEFA
Cup. Bolton qualified for the 2007–08 tournament by finishing 7th in the 2006–07 Premier League season
and this time they managed to reach the last 16 of the competition. Bolton Wanderers moved to the
Reebok Stadium in 1997.

Portsmouth F.C.
Portsmouth Football Club is an English football club founded on 5 April 1898, based in Portsmouth.
They play in the Premier League. Portsmouth have won the FA Cup twice, most recently in 2008.
Portsmouth's debut in the First Division in 1927/28 season was a struggle. The next season they continued
to falter, losing 10-0 to Leicester City, still a club record defeat. However, despite their failings in the
league, that season also saw Portsmouth reach the FA Cup final for the first time, which they lost to
Bolton Wanderers. The 1933-34 season saw Portsmouth again reach the FA Cup Final, defeated this time
by Manchester City. Having established themselves in the top flight, the 1938-39 season saw Portsmouth
reach their third FA Cup Final. This time the club managed to defeat the favourites, Wolves, convincingly
4-1. League football was again suspended due to World War II, meaning Pompey hold the unusual
distinction of holding the FA Cup for the longest uninterrupted period as the trophy wasn't contested
again until the 1945-46 season. League football resumed for the 1946-47 campaign. In Pompey's Golden
Jubilee season of 1948-49, the club were tipped to be the first team of the 20th century to win the Football
League and FA Cup double. However, Pompey crashed out of the FA Cup in the semi-final against
Leicester City, but made up for it by claiming the league title in spectacular fashion. The club retained the
title the following year, beating Aston Villa 5-1 on the last day of the season, and are thus one of only five
English teams to have won back to back titles since World War II. Although the team finished third in
1954-55, subsequent seasons saw Portsmouth struggle and they were relegated to the Second Division in
1959. Portsmouth went down to the Third Division in 1961 (the first former English League champion
team to do so) but were promoted back to the Second Division at the first time of asking, but Portsmouth
were again relegated to the Third Division in 1976. In November 1976 the club found itself needing to
raise £25,000 to pay off debts and so avoid bankruptcy. Consequently, they were relegated to the Fourth
Division in 1978. Portsmouth were promoted back to Division Three in 1980, and in the 1982-83 season
they won the Third Division championship, gaining promotion back to the Second Division. Portsmouth
narrowly missed winning promotion to the First Division twice before finally succeeding in 1986-87.
Unfortunately, by the middle of the 1987-88 season the club was again in grave financial trouble, and
Portsmouth were relegated straight back to the Second Division. In 1991-92 season, Portsmouth reached
the semi-finals of the FA Cup, losing on penalties to eventual winners Liverpool after a replay.
Portsmouth missed out on promotion to the FA Premier League only by virtue of having scored one less
goal than West Ham United. In 2002/03 Portsmouth were celebrating winning the Division One
Championship and promotion to the Premier League. The club finished 13th , 16th and 17th in its first three
Premier League seasons. In January 2006 Portsmouth was bought by businessman Alexandre Gaydamak
and, with large amounts of money available for the manager to make record signings, the club finished
the 2006-2007 season in the top half (9th ) of the table for the first time, only one point short of European
qualification. The 2007-08 season ended even better (8th place) and won the FA Cup with a 1-0 win
against Championship team Cardiff City. The win earned them a place in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, the
club's first time playing European football.
