Burnley F.C.
Burnley Football Club is a professional football club based in Burnley, in north-east Lancashire,
England. Nicknamed The Clarets due to their claret and blue strip, founded in 1882, they have played at
Turf Moor since 1883. They were founder members of The Football League in 1888.
Burnley have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920-21 and 1959-60, and were FA Cup
winners on April 25, 1914, beating Liverpool F.C. 1-0 at Crystal Palace.
As recently as 1960 they were league champions, but have been outside the top flight since 1976 and
from 1985 endured a seven-year spell in the lowest tier of the Football League. In 1987 they narrowly
avoided relegation to the Conference. Since 2000, they have been in the second tier of the English league.
Burnley enjoyed a long unbroken top flight spell ending in 1971 in which, more often than not, they were
in the upper reaches of the League table. The 50s and early 60s saw the team revolve around the midfield
engine room of Jimmy Adamson and Jimmy McIlroy. It was around these two that the championship-
winning team of 1960 was built, managed by Harry Potts. Two years later the Clarets narrowly missed
out on a League and Cup double. The departure of McIlroy to Stoke City and retirement of Adamson
coincided with a decline in fortunes; they nonetheless managed to finish 3rd in 1966. The remainder of
the decade was otherwise one of mid-table mediocrity, with Potts being replaced by Adamson as manager
in 1970. Adamson was unable to halt the slide and relegation followed in 1971.
Burnley won the Second Division title in 1973 with Adamson still in charge. In the First Division, led by
elegant playmaker Martin Dobson, the side managed 6th in 1974, and 10th (despite Dobson being sold to
Everton early in that season) in 1975. Relegation from the First Division in 1976 saw the end of
Adamson's tenure as manager, and the club have not been back in the highest level since. From the
2009/10 season they are back in FA Premier League.

West Ham United F.C.
West Ham United F.C. are a football club based in Upton Park, Newham, East London and play their
home matches at The Boleyn Ground. They are currently in the English Premier League.
The team enjoyed 10 consecutive top flight seasons from 1993 to 2003 prior to relegation to The
Championship. They have won the FA Cup three times: in 1964, 1975 and 1980, and also captured the
now defunct Cup Winners Cup in 1965 and the Intertoto Cup in 1999, but have never won the League
Championship, best position: 3rd in the 1985-86 season. The club returned to the Premier League in 2005
and achieved a 9th place finish. In addition the club progressed through to the FA Cup Final for the first
time in twenty-six years where they lost on penalties to Liverpool F.C. after a 3-3 draw.
The club was founded in 1895 as the works side Thames Ironworks F.C. by Thames Ironworks and
Shipbuilding Co. Ltd company chairman Arnold Hills and foreman Dave Taylor. They turned
professional upon entering the Southern League Second Division in 1898, which they won at the first
attempt. In June 1900, Thames Ironworks was wound up, but was immediately relaunched on July 5,
1900 as West Ham United Football Club
West Ham United first established themselves in 1964, when manager Ron Greenwood guided the club to
their first major trophy in the shape of an FA Cup final victory over Preston North End. The success of
1964 was repeated a year later, this time with a European Cup Winners Cup triumph over 1860 Munich at
Wembley. West Ham marched to another FA Cup success in 1975 and to another UEFA Cup Winners'
Cup final (1975-76). But this time West Ham were on the losing side. 2 years later in 1978 and the club
were relegated to the Second Division. They won a second FA Cup victory under Lyall's leadership
whilst still in Division 2 in 1980 (no side outside the top division has achieved that since). This time the
win was over another London club, the much-fancied Arsenal F.C. This remains West Ham's most recent
major trophy. In 1981, West Ham finished runners-up in the League Cup.
The next manager to occupy the hot seat at West Ham was Billy Bonds, whose first season at the helm
(1990-91) ended with runners-up spot in the Second Division and a place back in the top division. But
West Ham struggled throughout the 1991-92 season and were relegated in bottom place, missing the first
season of the new Premier League. West Ham regained their top flight status at the first attempt, finishing
Division One runners-up in 1992-93 and securing promotion to the Premiership. They survived relegation
by a comfortable margin in 1993-94, but Bonds walked out on the club the following summer to be
succeeded by Harry Redknapp. West Ham avoided relegation again in 1994-95 and played their part in
the final-day drama of the season, holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Upton Park and denying
them a third successive Premiership title. By the end of 1998/99 West Ham had achieved an impressive
5th place finish. But, for the only time in league history, were denied a UEFA Cup place due to new
UEFA Coefficients. (The seasons to either side had seen every team down to 7th feature in the UEFA
Cup.) The team instead was entered as one of England's Inter-Toto cup competitors (and a place in the
UEFA Cup proper up for grabs). A victory over Metz in the two-legged final eventually earned the
Hammers a place in the UEFA Cup - ending an absence of almost 20 years from European competition.
The highlight of the 2005-06 season, was reaching the FA Cup final, and taking favourites Liverpool to a
penalty shootout where they lost, but gained entry to the UEFA Cup as Liverpool had qualified for the
Champions League through league position.

Southampton F.C.
Southampton Football Club (originally St Mary's YMA) are an English football team, nicknamed The
Saints. Based in the city of Southampton in Hampshire, the team was formed in November 1885. In 1898
the team moved into The Dell, the ground which was to be their home for over 100 years. However, as a
result of a limited stadium capacity, the team moved to St Mary's Stadium in 2001. The current stadium is
more than double the size of its predecessor, and has staged England internationals.
Their finest hour was their FA Cup win in 1976, when they beat Manchester United 1-0. They also were
the runners-up in 2003 against Arsenal and runners-up in the 1979 League Cup final against Nottingham
Forest. Southampton also finished runners-up in the Football League Championship to Liverpool in
1983/84.
Southampton reached their first F.A Cup final in 1900, losing to Bury, but had to wait until 1976 to win
the trophy - beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley. In 1984 they finished second in the league to
claim their highest-ever league finish. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992 and
competed in its first 13 seasons before finally being relegated in 2005. From the 2009/10 season they play
in League One (third level).

Derby County
Derby County Football Club is an English football club based in Derby. The club was formed in 1884
as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. On 16 April 1898, Derby appeared in their first FA
Cup final at Crystal Palace, but lost 3-1. They were losing finalists again in 1899 and 1903.
In the 1945-1946 season Derby got to the final of the FA Cup and won by beating Charlton Athletic 4-1
after extra time. The League restarted the following season after a break due to World War II, but Derby
could not reproduce their pre-War form and were relegated in 1953. In 1955 they were relegated to the
Third Division North for the first time in their history. In 1967, Brian Clough took over and led them to
their greatest glory. Derby were promoted to the First Division in 1969, finished fourth in 1970, got
banned from competing in Europe due to financial irregularities in 1971, and won their first ever Football
League Championship in 1972. Though Derby did not retain their title the following season, they did
reach the semi-finals of the European Cup. They lost to Juventus in a controversial match which was
subject to subsequent allegations that the Italian club had bribed the match officials, leading Clough, to
call the Italians "cheating bastards". Derby's League success was repeated in 1974–1975 season when
they won the title. However, Derby's form declined towards the end of the 1970s and they went down to
the Second Division in 1980. Though they challenged well in their first season, Derby's stay in the
Second Division was not a happy one and they were relegated to the Third Division in 1984. After a two
year stint in the Third Division, Cox's emerging side were promoted to the Second Division and won it at
the first attempt, returning to the old First Division in 1987. The club finished fifth in the 1988-1989
season, with the team now containing stars like Peter Shilton, Mark Wright, Dean Saunders and Ted
McMinn. However, English clubs were banned from European competition at the time following the
Heysel Stadium Disaster, so the Rams missed out on their place in the UEFA Cup. The club was
relegated back to the Second Division in 1991 and once again in 2002. They played in Premier League in
the 2007-2008 season, but were relegated, so from 2008/09 they play in the Championship.

Sunderland A.F.C.
Sunderland Association Football Club is a professional association football team based in Sunderland,
Tyne and Wear, in North-East England. They play in the Premier League and are one of the most
successful clubs in English football, reached the First Division in 1890 and over the next 50 years were
league champions six times and having won two FA Cups. They moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997
after 99 years at Roker Park.
Before the Second World War, Sunderland were league champions six times - in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902,
1913, and most recently in 1936, when they became the last team wearing striped shirts to win the league.
They were elected into the football league in 1890, becoming the first team to join after the league's birth
in 1888. Sunderland stayed in the top flight until 1958, a record which only Arsenal have bettered since,
in 1992. The club won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3-1 victory over Preston North End.
Sunderland's major triumph post World War II was the club's second FA Cup victory in 1973, when the
club secured a 1-0 victory over Leeds United thanks to an Ian Porterfield goal and a terrific double save
from Jimmy Montgomery (who has the record number of appearances for Sunderland). They reached the
final of the League Cup in 1985, in which they were beaten 1-0 by Norwich City.
Were relegated from the First Division for the first time in 1958, making 68 consecutive seasons spent in
the English top league, still the second highest total in English football. Since then though, they have
struggled to establish themselves back in the top flight. Played their first Premiership season in 1996-97,
which ended in relegation on the final day of the season. Returned to the Premiership in 1999 and finished
seventh in both of their first two seasons back at the highest level. Were relegated from the Premiership in
2003 with a record low of four wins, 21 goals and 19 points.
They returned to the Premiership in 2005/2006 season, but went down after just one season, breaking
their own record by attaining just 3 wins and 15 points. They then returned to England's top flight after a
successful 2006/07 season in the Championship, winning it under the leadership of manager Roy Keane.

Watford F.C.
Watford Football Club are an English professional football club based in Watford, Hertfordshire. As of
the 2007-08 season, they play in the Championship, having been relegated from the Premiership in 2006-
07. The club was founded in 1881, first playing at Cassio Road ground, before moving to Vicarage Road
in 1922, where they remain to this day.
The club is best known for its two spells under the management of former England manager Graham
Taylor. The first lasting from 1977 to 1987, when the club rose to the old Division One from Division
Four, also reaching the FA Cup final in 1984 and competing in the UEFA Cup. The second lasting from
1997 to 2001, when Taylor took the club from Division Two to the Premiership in successive seasons.
During both of these eras the club was owned by Elton John, who is now the club's honorary life
president. Watford had reached the First Division by the start of the 1982–83 season. Watford finished
their first top flight season as runners-up behind champions Liverpool. The club competed in the UEFA
cup the following season and an FA Cup final appearance followed in 1984, although Watford lost to
Everton. The Hornets suffered a terrible start to the 1987-88 season and were relegated from the First
Division at the end of that season. The next season, 1988-89, Watford failed to return to the First Division
after they lost Second Division playoffs. Over the next few seasons, Watford never seriously challenged
for promotion. A second successive promotion followed in 1998-99, thanks to a playoff final victory over
Bolton which secured the club's promotion to the Premiership. The Premiership season started brightly
with an early surprising victory over Liverpool, but soon faded away, and Watford were relegated after
finishing bottom. In the 2006/07 season played once again in the Premiership, but Watford only recorded
five wins, and sat at the bottom of the league table. However, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup,
where they lost to Manchester United. Despite drawing 1-1 with Manchester City, Watford were
relegated on 21 April 2007.

Millwall F.C. London
Millwall Football Club is an English football team based at The Den, in Bermondsey, South East
London. They currently play in Football League One (third level). The team was founded in 1885,
nickname is The Lions, previously, The Dockers. They changed the nickname after being referred to as
"Lions" for their acts of giant killing in their FA Cup run of 1900, when they reached the semi final. They
also reached the semi final in 1903, and 1937, while they went one better and reached the final in 2004,
losing to Manchester United.
In 1988, Millwall surprised observers by winning the Second Division championship and gained
promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time in their history. Millwall had been the
only professional team in London never to have played in the top flight. Millwall's first top division
season ended with a tenth place finish, which was the lowest place occupied by the club all season, but
were relegated in bottom place at the end of the 1989-90 campaign. In 2001, the club won promotion as
Division Two champions after five years in the lower tier of the league. They played the Cup final on
May 22, 2004, losing 3–0 to Manchester United. As Manchester United had already qualified for the
Champions League, Millwall were assured of playing in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup. They were only the
second team from outside the top flight to play in the final since 1982, and were the first team from
outside the Premiership to reach the final since its foundation in 1992. In the 2004/05 UEFA Cup,
Millwall lost 4–2 on aggregate in the first round proper, to Hungarian Champions Ferencváros, with Wise
scoring both Millwall goals. Millwall experienced a very difficult season, possibly as a consequence of
having had no fewer than four managers in 2005. Their relegation to League One was confirmed on
Monday 17 April 2006 with a 2–0 loss against Southampton.

Middlesbrough F.C.
Middlesbrough Football Club, also known as 'The Boro', are an English football club based in
Middlesbrough. Formed in 1876, they have played at the Riverside Stadium since August 1995, their
third ground since turning professional in 1889. The club's highest league finish to date was third in the
1913–14 season and they have only spent two seasons outside of the Football League's top two divisions.
Middlesbrough were controversially deducted three points for failing to fulfil a fixture against Blackburn
Rovers during the 1996–97 Premier League season and were subsequently relegated. They were
promoted the following season and played eleventh consecutive season in the top division, but relegated
from Premier League in 2009, so from 2009/10 season they play in Championship.
Middlesbrough won the League Cup in 2004, the club's first and only major trophy. This success also
ensured that Middlesbrough would qualify for Europe — the UEFA Cup — for the first time, in which
they reached the last 16. UEFA cup qualification was achieved for the second consecutive year (finished
7th) after a dramatic 1–1 away draw with Manchester City thanks to a late penalty save from Mark
Schwarzer in the last game of the 2004/05 season.
On 27 April 2006, Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven, following two comebacks
from 3–0 down. However, the team lost 4–0 to Sevilla.

Portsmouth F.C.
Portsmouth Football Club is an English football club founded on 5 April 1898, based in Portsmouth.
They play in the Premier League. Portsmouth have won the FA Cup twice, most recently in 2008.
Portsmouth's debut in the First Division in 1927/28 season was a struggle. The next season they continued
to falter, losing 10-0 to Leicester City, still a club record defeat. However, despite their failings in the
league, that season also saw Portsmouth reach the FA Cup final for the first time, which they lost to
Bolton Wanderers. The 1933-34 season saw Portsmouth again reach the FA Cup Final, defeated this time
by Manchester City. Having established themselves in the top flight, the 1938-39 season saw Portsmouth
reach their third FA Cup Final. This time the club managed to defeat the favourites, Wolves, convincingly
4-1. League football was again suspended due to World War II, meaning Pompey hold the unusual
distinction of holding the FA Cup for the longest uninterrupted period as the trophy wasn't contested
again until the 1945-46 season. League football resumed for the 1946-47 campaign. In Pompey's Golden
Jubilee season of 1948-49, the club were tipped to be the first team of the 20th century to win the Football
League and FA Cup double. However, Pompey crashed out of the FA Cup in the semi-final against
Leicester City, but made up for it by claiming the league title in spectacular fashion. The club retained the
title the following year, beating Aston Villa 5-1 on the last day of the season, and are thus one of only five
English teams to have won back to back titles since World War II. Although the team finished third in
1954-55, subsequent seasons saw Portsmouth struggle and they were relegated to the Second Division in
1959. Portsmouth went down to the Third Division in 1961 (the first former English League champion
team to do so) but were promoted back to the Second Division at the first time of asking, but Portsmouth
were again relegated to the Third Division in 1976. In November 1976 the club found itself needing to
raise £25,000 to pay off debts and so avoid bankruptcy. Consequently, they were relegated to the Fourth
Division in 1978. Portsmouth were promoted back to Division Three in 1980, and in the 1982-83 season
they won the Third Division championship, gaining promotion back to the Second Division. Portsmouth
narrowly missed winning promotion to the First Division twice before finally succeeding in 1986-87.
Unfortunately, by the middle of the 1987-88 season the club was again in grave financial trouble, and
Portsmouth were relegated straight back to the Second Division. In 1991-92 season, Portsmouth reached
the semi-finals of the FA Cup, losing on penalties to eventual winners Liverpool after a replay.
Portsmouth missed out on promotion to the FA Premier League only by virtue of having scored one less
goal than West Ham United. In 2002/03 Portsmouth were celebrating winning the Division One
Championship and promotion to the Premier League. The club finished 13th , 16th and 17th in its first three
Premier League seasons. In January 2006 Portsmouth was bought by businessman Alexandre Gaydamak
and, with large amounts of money available for the manager to make record signings, the club finished
the 2006-2007 season in the top half (9th ) of the table for the first time, only one point short of European
qualification. The 2007-08 season ended even better (8th place) and won the FA Cup with a 1-0 win
against Championship team Cardiff City. The win earned them a place in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, the
club's first time playing European football.
