 Our Guruji- ShriGuru Pawan Sinha Ji,
always told us to read and know about Gurudev,
Swami Vivekananda ji. It wasn't until I started
reading about him in his books (The complete
works of Swami Vivekananda) that I realised
how important he was and IS for us. Not only a
spiritual leader, but he’s also a worldwide
inspiration for students and adults alike. His
knowledge, his power, his sacrifices and
dedication towards his duties for the nation and
its culture have made him a source of
inspiration.
The misfortune of Indians is that we haven’t
realised his importance even now. While the
world claims that Swami Vivekananda belongs
to them, we still do not value saints like him.
Swami Vivekananda is one of the Hundred
makers of America, but he is nowhere to be
found in the hundred makers of India. It is sad
that we have lost the ability to respect our
teachers and Gurus.
If we look into the history of Indian freedom
struggle, it will become apparent that Swami Ji
was an integral part of it as he inspired several
of them. Not only did he inspire freedom
fighters, but also several other big personalities
including kings, industrialists, writers, artists
etc. On the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s
birth anniversary on 12th January 2020, we
decided to bring forth several aspects of his
personality.
The 7th edition of ‘Young Moves; The
Magazine for Game Changers’ talks about our
inspiration- Swami Vivekananda Ji by
highlighting different aspects related to him.
These include his meditation on the rock, his
world-famous lecture in Chicago, his message
on education and Hinduism, his relationship

This issue also highlights the places visited
by Swami Vivekananda Ji which becomes the
motivation behind our slug- ‘YAM Connects’
wherein Swami Ji travelled throughout Indian
sub-continent and spread the message of
unity, peace, love and Hinduism. Our ashram-
Paavan Chintan Dhara has portrayed the story
of Swami Vivekananda Ji in several of its self-
created theatrical plays. The glimpses of these
plays are also pictorially presented in this
magazine.
As we celebrate Makar Sakranti and Lohri in
the month of January, we’ll highlight the
reasons behind celebrating them in ‘Ae Mere
Watan Ke Logon.’
It is imperative to understand the
importance of saints like Swami Vivekananda
Ji in current times when personal political
motives of people have been shadowing the
purity of religions. Swami Ji in such sense has
been a figure who rooted us and brought glory
to the Hindu religion. It is rightly said- " What
Hinduism needed, amidst the general
disintegration of the modern era, was a rock
where it could lie at anchor. An anchor, an
authoritative utterance in which it might
recognise itself.” According to me, this was
given to Hinduism by the words and writings of
Swami Vivekananda ji.

Is the transformation of a human being
easy? And especially, when a person like
Narendranath Datta (Pre-monastic name of
Swamiji), having rationalist and scientific
temperament.
No. it’s not easy at all. Transformation is not
a one-day activity, it’s a gradual and cumulative
process. One can change their habits but a
change in personality, thoughts, lifestyle,
temperament and most vital the goal of life can
only be brought about with the help of a Master
(Guru).
So was the case of Swamiji who born in a
prosperous family but sacrificed everything for
Sri Ramkrishna’s mission. November 1880
was the year when Naren met his Master at
Surendranath Mitra family’s residence in a
spiritual festival. 16, August 1886 was the
unfortunate day when his Master left him.
Naren was left with responsibilities of Sri
Saradamoni (Wife of Sri Ramkrishna) and
other fellow direct disciples of Ramkrishna
order. Swamiji lived only for 39 years and had
spent 5 years, a very small period with his
Master, but this small duration determined his
future. He had the full potential and the calibre
to live a lavish life but he chose to be a monk to
succeed in his Master’s vision.

Sri Ramkrishna lived a simple and mystic life
with the vigour of austerity. He used to spend
hours with visitors of Dakshineshwar, a shrine
in Kolkata dedicated to Divine Mother
(Goddess Kali) where he was appointed as a
priest but he was very careful and choosy in the
selection of his disciples. He chose only 16
disciples to carry forward his spiritual legacy
and Swamiji headed them all.
Sri Ramkrishna loved disciples like his own
children once he said that “Some of my disciples
are like two-petalled lotus, some are like four or
eight-petalled lotus but my Naren is like
thousand-petalled lotus as he has so many
qualities.” He was familiar with the intrinsic
powers of Naren that is why he had decided to
make him his successor. In the first meeting
with Naren, he said, “He is Narayan, sustainer
of the world.”
Sri Ramkrishna and Narendranath both are
entirely different personalities. One is
uneducated, simple and always in ecstatic
mood whereas Naren was a young, curious and
an exceptionally brilliant young man.
Ramakrishna was in search of a man who can
contribute to mankind and Naren had all
essential merits to do so.

Ramkrishna initially due to his
unsophisticated and informal behaviour.
Sometimes he even used crack jokes on him
but gradually he realized the truth. He had
long discussions on various issues,
particularly on the existence of God. Sri
Ramkrishna trained Naren in meditation and
gave answers to his all spiritual and worldly
questions. After the demise of Ramkrishna,
Naren never felt lonely because whenever he
required his guidance, he sat in deep
meditation and got connected to the astral
form of Ramkrishna. Even before his famous
Chicago speech when he was nervous, he
immediately he concentrated on his Master
and eventually created a history. It is said that
the Master never left Naren alone because
before demise he transferred his all spiritual
powers to Naren and well-equipped him to
establish the ultimate truth.
It is also said that if Naren did not meet to
Ramkrishna he would have become one of the
greatest atheists of the world. Swamiji spread
his master’s message of universal humanism
across the globe. He said that his Master’s life
was divided into two parts, in the first part, he
attained spiritual knowledge and in the second
part, he imparted everything to mankind. The
selfless life of Sri Ramkrishna led him to work
for humanity irrespective of class, creed, sect
and religion. He wrote many hymns on Master
and his wife. In those hymns, he constantly
used synonyms of Lord Shiv for Master as Lord
Shiv is the deity of reconstruction and his
Master played a pivotal role in the
reconstruction of his personality.
Undoubtedly, Sri Ramkrishna eliminated all
unrequited features of Naren and made him a
self-reliant leader of humanity. It is the beauty
of the Master- Disciple relationship that they
are connected with a metaphysical bond to
make the physical world more beautiful and
conducive for coming generations. Shri
Ramkrishna and Narendranath have set a
milestone for forthcoming generations of
Masters and Disciples.

the life and teachings

Vivekananda. He is
the biggest game-
changer ever because
of his infinite
contribution to
Indian society and
the world. This time, therefore, we present to you the original game
changer, Swami Vivekananda Ji. This article shall be highlighting why
and how Swami Vivekananda is a youth icon. Along with the
understanding of his teachings, it is also imperative to understand what
he expected out of the youth of the country. It is then that we will be able
to become the India of his dreams. Swami Vivekananda’s life is an
example for the youth of the country. He lived a life dedicated to the
youth of the country and died as a youth, too.

 The young age is a crucial time in a
youth's life. Where, on one hand, they are
getting the direction of their lives, on the
other, they are also getting ready to direct
the society. Similarly, the misery of society,
stemming out of the lack of knowledge,
worried Swami Vivekananda. He says that
the re-establishment of the society is only
possible through brave, strong, intellectual
and pious youth. Youth who works without
any political agenda or political gain. He
gave a very strong and clear message to
youth- "Arise, awake, and stop not till the
goal is reached.” He carried forward these
golden words and gave many great
speeches which inspired the world.
Swami ji says that if there is any nation in
the world which can be called pious or
where people are still inclined towards the
search of God or where people have
qualities of humanity like forgiveness,
patience, mercy, purity or where
spirituality and self-realization are
developed, then that nation is India. Great
men have taken birth in India since ages
and they have given the principles of truth,
spirituality, Sanatan Dharma and have
enlightened us with the knowledge that will
shower today's society with the bliss of
spiritual life.
Religion is the life force of the whole of
India. Even after thousands of years of
foreign invasion and tortures, this race
(Indians) has survived. That's because this
race has always been attached to
spirituality and religion. So for Indians, the
only way for the development of our race is
by understanding that nurturing the
invaluable knowledge given by our
forefathers is our main responsibility. Have
you ever heard about a nation whose great
kings call themselves sons of Tapasvis,
Rishis (scientists), and Ardhnagan (half-
naked) with pride? If not, then listen- ours
is that nation. In other nations, spiritual
leaders feel pride in calling themselves
successors of great kings, but ours is the
nation where the great kings feel proud in
calling themselves the sons of old Rishis.
Swami ji says that the main objective of
the western people is only to survive in this
materialistic world. For them, God is a
being who keeps their land clean and
produces resources. That's the primary
objective of their God. Contrary to this, our
religion asks us not to focus on
materialistic well-being, on gaining money
and in exploiting the weaker. Our religion
does send not an army, under whose feet
the land trembles, and who feels great
pride in destroying other races and looting
others. That's why they say, "so what's in
your religion? If it can’t help you conquer
the materialistic world, then what's the use
of it?" They can't even imagine that this
proves the supremacy of our religion
because our religion is beyond this
materialistic world. They teach us that God
is the only truth. The world is false and
momentary. The primary thought of our
religion is ‘Tyaag’ ie Sacrifice. We gather
materialistic objects for the establishment
of our religion and then sacrifice it for the
betterment of others.
Swami ji says that all the other religions
in the world are established on some
historical lives, but ours is established on
the basis of some principles. Any person on
this planet, be it a man or a woman, can't be
said to have formed the Vedas. They are
formed by the everlasting principles. The
names of these rishis are still unknown.

Sanatan Dharma. They shaped and kept

Ok, let's suppose you experience all this,
but I ask, have you ever decided to do

agendas? Have you chosen a path to save
brothers and sisters of your nation from

discovered a few words of the remedy for
your brothers and sisters? This is the
second point - work. But nationalism
doesn't end here. Are you ready to fight
gigantic problems for completion of work?
Even when the whole world, your whole
family, everyone is standing against, will
you stand the fight for the truth? Even when
your name, fame and money is snatched
from you would you still have the same will
power? If yes, then you can achieve
anything you wish for.
Do you know that Vedas are divided into
two parts - 'KarmKand' and 'GyaanKand'.
'Karmkand' consists of many types of yog-
yagya and anushthans, which is not in
limelight today. 'Gyaankand' consists of
spiritual teachings- they are commonly
known as Upanishads and Vedanta. Each
and every chapter in Upanishads give me a
message of power. Who'll give us the
power? Our Upanishads consists of such
energy which can ignite the whole world,
can reform this whole world and make it
full of energy and bravery.
It is rightly said by the Upanishads that
ignorance is the root cause of all the pain
(worldly, as well as, spiritual pain). If a lady
doesn't know the art of cooking food, she
can't be a successful housewife, which will
be the cause of her pain. Similarly, if a
student, teacher or a businessman doesn't
have proper knowledge of his/her field, it
will become the cause of their pain and
sufferings. This ignorance is what keeps us
apart from loving each other. When we'll
know each other, love and compassion will
automatically come. And that's for sure
because we all are one. I'll make one thing
clear, that we all are weak, too weak
actually. First is our physical weakness.
This physical weakness is the reason for the
one-third of our pain and sufferings. We
are lazy and we can't work. We can't
establish the full unity, we can't love each
other, we are very greedy, once we get in
small bunches, hate starts to grow, we get
jealous. For instance, we fought about the
way of doing tilak for years. We think a lot
but don't work accordingly. Our way of
living is very backwards. The main reason
for this is- physical weakness. Now talking
about mental weakness. Playing football
rather than reading Gita for an hour is more
beneficial. The increased blood circulation
increases the internal growth and energy
and enables us to understand Gita much
better.”
So, we learnt that swami ji dreams of a
youth who is physically strong, is filled with
knowledge, is compassionate towards
others, has a clear aim of life, who
understands his religion inside out and is
proud of it and most of all, who is a true
nationalist.

 Ignited Pens Why that ROCK?

 I recently went to Vivekananda Rock,
the last continuous land of India. I
learned from my Guruji- ShriGuru
Pawan Sinha Ji, the history of this rock,
the reason behind naming it as
Vivekananda Rock, why Swami Ji went
there and all such things. I’ve already
been to Vivekananda Rock earlier, but
this time when I went there, I wanted to
feel the energy of that place as I knew its
historical background now. The place
now held different importance for me
and it no longer remained just a tourist
spot for me.
Swami ji came down to Kanyakumari,
the last point of India on 24 December
1892 before his departure for Chicago to
participate in world religious conference
in 1893. He came here to meditate and
wanted to know the solution to the
problems faced by our country at that
time. When he was travelling
throughout the country, he realised that
the biggest problem faced by the general
population of the country was a severe
lack of food and education. He was
deeply disturbed by these problems and
wanted to understand the solutions.
After travelling the whole country he
came to this rock which was the
endpoint of India. He reached there by
swimming as he didn’t even have enough
money to reach there through a
ferry/boat. He sat there on the rock,
meditating for presumably, the
estimated three days 25, 26, 27
December 1892, to attain enlightenment
on the rock.
Even the noise of the gigantic sea
waves could not disturb the peace of this
place. As Swami Ranganathananda says
in his lecture on Swami Vivekananda Ji,
“For the first time in the spiritual
history of mankind, on a tiny bit of
a rock at the southern end of India,
a man of God sat in meditation, not
on God and His Glories, but on
man and his problems.” After his
meditation, Swami Ji gathered more
energy and courage and took the
permission of his Guru, the revered
saint- Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa
and his Guru Maa- Sharda Devi and his
parents, the permission to go to the
Parliaments of Religions in Chicago. He
became a spiritual leader and
philosopher.
The place of such importance, both for
spirituality and for the future of India, is
sadly converted into a popular tourist
spot where most of the people don’t
know the history or the reason behind its
name, but they’re always eager to click
thousands of photos and selfies. Many
people came here, not to feel the beauty
and peace of this place but to take
photos, this place became a tourist spot.
Vivekananda Rock has many bookshops
and even a Dhyana math, but people
prefer superficial things, destroying the
goal to visit this place.

 Ignited Pens What happened in
Chicago?
This story begins from Swami
Vivekananda’s travel when he meets
Maharaja Ajit Singh of the Khetri state.
Maharaja Ajit Singh tells Swamiji that he
should go abroad and represent India and
Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's
Religions. Swamiji refuses him, but when
people started forcing him, Swami
Vivekananda replied that he will go only
after getting orders from his master. He had
never even thought of going abroad, but one
day while meditating, he got orders for the
same from his master, Ramakrishna
Paramahansa. Later, he received a letter
from his spiritual mother and on 31st May
1893, he departed from a ship going from
Bombay to America.
He reaches Chicago on 30th July 1893,
after passing through many countries. He
comes to know that the Parliament of the
World's Religion has been postponed to
September and for participating, he had to
submit his identity card. He could not stay
in a place like Chicago because Chicago was
very expensive for him. So, he left for
Boston where Swamiji found Professor
John Henry Wright who arranged an

Nobody had given Swami Vivekananda a
place to stay in Boston. It was an extremely
cold climate there and to protect himself
from cold, Swami Ji used to sleep in the
railway's box kept at the station. He didn’t
even have anything to eat. One day, a person
teased him by showing food while Swamiji
had nothing to eat and no money to buy
some food. Suddenly, a person comes
running towards him and shouts, “Who is
Naren?” So, Swamiji looked around to see
who was calling him in an unknown country
and tells that his name is Naren. That
person gives Swami Vivekananda a full
meal to eat. Swamiji asks the person why
did he give him the food? The person
answers that a person came in his dream
and said that his son was hungry at the
station. So that person requested to give
Swami Ji something to eat. Thus, this
person ran in search of Naren. This is the
Guru-shishya (disciple's) love, Guruji was
not around but still, he had to take care of
his disciple.
 Children in Boston gave weird looks to
Swami ji and made fun of him and his dress.
These children, including some older
people, pelted stones on him, but to protect
himself, he used to hide in the corners of the
wall. Not all people were bad. There were
also some women who gave him a place to
stay and a pair of suit. After spending some
time in Boston, he returned to Chicago.
Now came the day of the World's first
Parliament of Religions and it was held
from 11 to 27 September 1893. More than
seven thousand people were sitting in that
parliament, including great spiritual
leaders. On 11th September 1893, Swamiji
was listening to the other speakers while
sitting there and started thinking about
where he would start from, what would he
say, how would he speak. At one point of
time, he was so nervous and afraid of the
stage that he kept on postponing his turn.
He asked the authority to send him at the
last. He never had much interest in stage
speaking and this was visible through his
nervousness. Yes, a great speaker like
Swami Vivekananda was nervous too.
When his turn came, he stood shakingly
and started going towards the podium.
With shivering legs, he stood there
watching everyone. Some people thought
that he was just another Hindu with no
power, so they started leaving the
parliament. It was then that he closed his
eyes and chanted “Om”, took goddess Kali
name and remembered his master,
gathered the power of the universe and
said, “My sisters and brothers of America!”
The power of his Yog and the power of his
speech shocked everyone, even the ones
who were leaving and everyone gave him a
standing ovation for 2 minutes. The
parliament was ringing with thunderous
sounds of clappings. Everyone was
impressed with his confidence, the way he
started and clarity of voice. He moved
forward as India's youngest monk by saying
that Hinduism is a religion which has told
the world about tolerance and universal
acceptance.
One of his very famous speech was on
19th September 1893 called “Paper on
Hinduism”. He spoke with the perfect
examples and gave complete logic. He gave
many speeches in Chicago after which his
huge portraits were hung on the road in the
city, under which Sanyasi Vivekananda was
written. Americans kneeled before his
portrait with devotion and respect.
Wherever he went, people used to run
behind him to listen. He was called many
times to give speeches from the altars of the
Churches, as well.
If Swamiji did not go abroad, many
revolutionaries and freedom fighters like
Subhash Chandra Bose, who were going
into depression would never wake up. It is
this saint who worked silently behind the
creation of several revolutionaries. It was
this Chicago speech that brought him into
the limelight of the world. But, it is the story
behind this that makes him one of the
greatest personalities ever.

Swami Vivekananda
It is said that when Swami Vivekananda
was to address before the parliament of
religions in Chicago, he began to speak on -
"The religious ideas of Hindus", but when
he ended, Hinduism had been created. This
saying alone is enough to make prudent
people realize how important are the

Hinduism in 3-4 pages, it’s like showing
light to the sun, but this is a small attempt
to give you'll an idea about it. The following
are the definitions, explanations and views
of Swamiji on the aspects of Hindu religion:
What is meant by religion?
Every living creature has intelligence
which strives for freedom. This is what
distinguishes living from dead. To be freer
is the goal of all our efforts. This effort to
attain freedom underlies in all forms of
worship, whether we know it or not.
Freedom from bondage is the goal of every
man. His whole life is a struggle after it. The
child rebels against the law as soon as it is
born. Its first utterance is a cry, a protest
against the bondage in which it finds
himself. This longing for freedom produces

People through the knowledge of science
are trying, from thousands of years, to get
freedom. Yet there is no freedom in nature.
It is all the law. With low consciousness, a
human first struggles against the bondage
of physical nature, but slowly this lower
consciousness grows and broadens the
higher conception of mental or moral
bondage and longing for spiritual freedom
begins. Here we see the divine dimly
shining through the veil of ignorance.
Slowly the soul realizes itself. So to know
that we are the unbound, infinite soul is
faith, it is religion.
Origin of Hindu religion
Hindus have received their religion
through revelation, the Vedas. By Vedas,
no books are meant. Vedas is a word
derived from the Sanskrit word 'vid', which
means 'to know'. Vedas means the
accumulated treasuring of spiritual laws
discovered by different persons in different
times. The discoverers of these laws are
called 'Rishis'. We honour them as perfect
beings. Some of the very greatest of them
were women. The Vedas teach us about the
immortality of the soul. According to them,
the creation is without beginning or end.
Even science is said to have proved that the
sum total of cosmic energy is always the
same. From the high spiritual flights of
Vedanta philosophy, of which the latest
discoveries of science seem like echoes, to
the low idea of idolatry with its
multifarious mythology, the agnosticism
of the Buddhists, and the atheism of the
Jains, each and all have a place in the
Hindu religion.
Concept of soul
A Hindu believes he is a spirit i.e the
soul. This soul is free, unbound, pure,
perfect and infinite. But, it somehow finds
itself tied down to matter and thinks itself
as a matter i.e human body. It now finds
itself bound, unpure, and finite. This soul
is also called as 'jiva'.
Concept of God
We believe in God, the father of the
universe, infinite and omnipotent. He is
everywhere, the pure, the formless one, the
almighty, the all-merciful. In Hinduism,
we call it Brahman or Ishwar. He is infinite.
But a question arises here, if our soul, at
last, becomes perfect then it also must
become infinite. But room for two infinite
unconditional beings is impossible. This is
why we believe in a personal God and we
ourselves are Him. This is the reason a
Hindu says “ ” i.e “I'm the
brahman.” In other words, I'm the divine,
the absolute, the infinite reality.
Stages of realization
The whole of the Hindu religion is
centred in realization, i.e man has to
become divine by realizing the divine. The
following are stages of realization:
External or material worship- In
this stage, we see God from far beyond. It
involves worshipping of idols, books,
images and other symbols.
Mental prayer - In this, we come
nearer to God and give him omnipresence
so that we live in him.
When lord has been realized- at last
we realize that we are Him i.e we are the
God.
These three are stages of a journey and
each one of them is true. This is the reason
why a Hindu say that a man is not travelling
from error to truth, but from truth to truth.
From truth which is lower to the truth which
is higher. Each step is an attempt by the
human soul to grasp the infinite. This is why
Vedanta teaches, “teach your children that
they are divine.”
Idol worship
Hindus have always been criticized
because of the practice of idol worshipping.
But, is criticizing without putting any effort
to know right? No. So we need to realize that
we people cannot think without a mental
image. When we think of omnipresent, a
mental image of the extended sky appears.
This is called the law of association, the
material image calls up to the mental idea
and vice versa. This is why Hindu uses an
external symbol and idols when he
worships. He will tell you that, it helps to
keep his mind fixed on the Being to whom
he prays. He very well knows that the
symbol or idol is not God.
Unity in variety
Hindus have realized that unity in variety
is the plan of nature. Every other religion

lays down some fixed dogmas and tries to
force society to adopt them. It places
before society only one coat which must fit
Jack and John and Henry, all alike. If it
does not fit John or Henry, he must go
without a coat to cover his body. But
Hinduism recognises that each effort is an
attempt to realize the divine. Hinduism
even has a place for beliefs of Buddhism
which is agnostic and Jainism which is
atheistic. This is so as both of them do not
depend on God, but the force of their
religion is directed to the great central
truth in every religion, that is to evolve a
God out of a man. So they don't know the
God as they have not seen the father, but
has seen the son. And he who has seen the
son has seen the father.
Nature of Hindus
Apart from all these theories, one needs
to understand the very nature of a Hindu.

To this Swamiji says, “The Hindus have
their fault, they some times have their
exceptions but, mark this, they are always
for punishing their own bodies, and never
for cutting the throats of their
neighbours.” Apart from this, the
perspective of Hindu towards other
religion and world shows its great
philosophical thought. To this Swamiji
adds, “To a Hindu, the whole world of
religion is travelling, a coming up, of
different men and women through various
conditions and circumstances, to the same
goal. Every religion is only evolving a God
out of the material man and the same God
is the inspirer of all of them. I challenge
the world to find throughout the whole
system of Sanskrit philosophy, any
expression as that the Hindu alone will be
saved and not others.” This is the scope of
acceptance of Hinduism and greatness of a
Hindu.

Healthy Recipe: Til ke Laddu
Indian Cooking (sesame seeds sweet)

Indians recently celebrated Makar
Sankranti and one of the most consumed
dishes at this time is Til ke Laddu. The
usage of Sesame increases around this
time due to its taste and more
importantly, due to its health benefits. In
India, the use of til starts from the month
of the Dhanteras festival and is used
until Makar Sankranti. It has been told that til is loved by Lord Vishnu and it’s his
favourite food. Whatever may be the religious reason, the medicinal benefits of til
can’t be ignored, especially in the winters. There are 8 types of til found all over the
world, but in India, we have white and black til. Whether til is white or black, there is
no such effect on its qualities.

Ingredients:
 Til (sesame seeds)- 500 grams
 Gur (jaggery)- 500 grams
 Ghee (Clarified butter)- 2 tsp

 Method:
● Clean the sesame seeds properly.
● Heat ghee (Clarified butter) in a heavy pan (kadhai) on medium flame.
● Add sesame seeds to it and stir continuously. Roast sesame seeds till they turn light brown.
● Take out the roasted sesame seeds and grind lightly or put them in a mixer to get a coarse
powder.
● Break off Gur (Jaggery) into small pieces.
● Pour 1 spoon Ghee (Clarified butter) in a pan and heat.
● Now melt Gur (Jaggery) on a low flame. Turn off the instant Gur melts.
● Put the crushed roasted sesame seeds in the melted Gur and blend well.
● Apply Ghee (Clarified butter) in your hands and knead the mixture to make it smooth.
● Take a little amount (about 1 tbsp) of the mixture at a time.
● Make round shaped Ladoo and place it on a plate.

Benefits:
 Til help in reducing cough or acidity and also gives energy to the body.
 Til should be given to new mothers so that her milk becomes healthier. Til helps in keeping
the muscles and bones of a baby strong.
 Along with Protein and vitamin-B complex, it contains a high amount of calcium. That’s why
it makes teeth, stomach, brain and bones stronger.
 Giving til and jaggery to children who are scared at night, who feel weak upon waking in the
morning, and wet their bed, is beneficial for them.
 Taking til in winter can help relieve body pain, and makes the heart strong.
 People under high stress should definitely take til.
 Heating the ground til and then applying its bandage on the wounded area can help relief
inflation and pain.
 People with the problem of arthritis must eat til. It also helps in relieving pain.
 Oil of til is also full of benefits. It is also good for health. Applying it on hair strengthens them.
 Applying a mixture of oil of til and Kapoor on the burnt area provides relief and eliminates
the chances of wounds.
 If the body becomes dry in the winter season, then applying til oil on the body can provide
moisture.

Note:
● Take some precautions while taking til. Don’t take more than 50 grams in a day because
it has a high amount of calories. It can increase fat. And secondly, til is believed to cause
diarrhoea when taken in large quantity.
● Pregnant women should avoid the consumption of til, because as such it’s nature is hot,
and can cause some damage. Those who apply til oil in the hair, must not use it more
than three times a week.

Enhancing one’s power of
concentration enables one to focus
thoughts on a destined activity,
prevents swaying in between the
distracting thoughts and helps in
achieving next to perfect results in
appreciable time. Later stages of
enhanced concentration help one to
achieve multitasking abilities with all
tasks performed simultaneously yet
perfectly. In the present scenario,
during the formative years of education,
if students are educated to train their
minds instead of cramming subjects
then it will make them the experts of
their destined fields. This can be
achieved in a short span of some years
and will enable them to contribute to
the development of society at a
comparatively younger age.

a ‘Life Building, Man-Making,

ideas.’ Education is all that helps people

Great personalities do not only
motivate people around them during
their lifespan but also keep motivating
and inspiring people after their lives.
One of these great personalities includes
Swami Vivekananda Ji who not only
inspired lakhs of Indians but people all
around the world. These inspired people
were from different fields, including
kings, Indian freedom fighters,
businessmen, writers, artists, scientists
and thousands of other people.
When I joined Paavan Chintan Dhara
Ashram and got to know about Swami
Vivekananda, I had several questions.
One of the most important questions
was if Swami Ji inspired so many
freedom fighters, why didn’t he
participate directly in the freedom
struggle? It was then when I read further
about him that I got to know that I was
wrong. Even if he was not involved
directly in the freedom struggle, he was
the maker of several prominent freedom

When such great personalities visit a place,
the place becomes purer. Naren was born
on the 12th of January in the year 1863 at
Kolkata. This is the same place where the
East India Company first began its trade.
Who imagined that Naren from Kolkata will
make his place in the heart of the whole
world? The temple of Goddess Kali in
Dakshineshwar makes this place purer.
Dakshineshwar is the place where Naren
and his Guru- Ramakrishna Paramahansa
met. It was in the memory of Shri
Ramakrishna that Belur Math was
established.
In the year 1888, Swami Vivekananda
began his wanderings and started his travel
of the nation. He began his travel from the
northern part of the country, from Banaras.
During his travels, he also went to
Ayodhya, Lucknow, Agra, Vrindavan,
Rishikesh, Kashmir, Columbo,
Lahore, Islamabad, London and
Chicago.
 When Naren was going to Rishikesh, he
met a station master named Sharat Chandra
Gupta at Hathras Railway Station. Naren
told him his goal. Sharat Chandra was so
influenced by him that he accepted Swami ji
as his Guru. Naren took Sharat to Rishikesh
and he later came to be known as Swami
Sadananda. There’s also a memorial in the
name of this event and its memory.
In his Himalaya travel, Swami Ji went
to Nainital, Almora and Srinagar.
Almora which is located in Uttarakhand is
very well known for its cultural heritage,
handicraft and its wildlife. The view of
Himalayan mountains from Almora is
breathtakingly beautiful. Swami
Vivekananda came thrice to this place. The
beauty and serenity of this place made
Swami ji express his wish to establish a
Math here. The first time that Swami
Vivekananda came to Almora, he
worshipped in Goddess Kasar temple.
There’s Ramakrishna ashram near Almora
which is also known as ‘Advaita’ ashram.
This was built by the inspiration of Swami
Vivekananda in March 1899.
After Almora, he moved on to Bhimtal
where he stayed for two and a half days. He
progressed to Kathgodam later. From
there he took a train and crossed the
mountains to reach the plainlands. Swami ji
came to Punjab next where he professed
the teachings of history and duty to the
common people. Sister Nivedita writes on
this- “as we were moving across different
parts of Punjab, Swami Ji’s unconditional
love towards his motherland was portrayed
through his talks, lectures and his
behaviour.”
After travelling through Punjab, he went
to Rawalpindi. From there he went to
Muri through horse ride and after staying
there for three days he went to Kashmir
through Kohaya-Baramula. He boarded
a houseboat and went to Srinagar which was
the main place where he stayed while in
Kashmir. Even if he visited any place during
the day, he spent his nights in Srinagar.
He stayed there for a month.
This travel showed a different side of
Swami Ji. sister Nivedita writes- “he is
speaking, but this is neither about the
geography of India nor is it about great
personalities and their lifestyle. It is not
even about the political condition of the
country or the people of the country. His
lectures include none of that. They are
innovative and contain an essence of him.
These lectures reflect Swami Ji’s own
experiences.”
Swami Vivekananda also enjoyed a day of
a picnic in Kashmir. Swami Ji also tried to
visit Amarnath through Sonmarg, but the
route to Amarnath was closed. Swami Ji
then progressed to Islamabad through
another houseboat. He was also visiting all
the temples in their way. The very first day
they visited Pandenath temple. Swami Ji
then visited some of the Buddhist temples
and that entire day, he kept on speaking
about Hinduism and Buddhism. This was
followed by a visit to two temples in
Avantipur, a temple in Bijbehra, and
another temple in Martand. He reached

Each of us has been highly inspired

by the works and teachings of great
personalities. Be it Lord Ram or Lord
Krishna or Swami Vivekananda and
many such personalities, their lives
have been the epitome of excellence.
They always motivate us to learn, to
strive for better and to serve society.
Swami Vivekananda even writes,
“Blessed are those whose bodies get
destroyed in the service of others.” In
the midst of all this inspiration and
motivation, a very important point,
sometimes, gets ignored. We forget
how these great personalities always
sought people who could understand
them and their works. More often than
not, people accepted or rejected them
without understanding them. And, this
precisely is the biggest cause of any
great person’s worry. This is the reason
why they feel lonely, have no one to
share things with, are often
misunderstood and spend a life with
not many people around. Even if they
talk to and teach a lot of people, what
they crave is to be understood.

gain a social following. Only a few of us
read it to fulfil its purpose- “OBEY.”
Only a few of us understand the
purpose of all this knowledge and try to
implement it practically for the
betterment of society.
I am saddened to see Swami Ji as the
“poster boy” of some organisations.
While there is nothing wrong in making
him the face of one’s organisation, the
sad part is that people use him only for
the face and do not follow his teachings.
This not only discredits his name but
also reflects the ignorance of society.
What we need right now is to read
and obey the teachings of Swami
Vivekananda and other great
personalities. We need to learn sacrifice
and understand our duty towards the
nation. The level of selflessness
portrayed by Swami Vivekananda is
exemplary. This can be substantiated
through several examples. One of my

Guru- Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa.
In the end part of Guru Ramakrishna’s
life, he was suffering from cancer. This
led to the creation of some kind of pus
and liquid around his mouth. This liquid
attracted flies which irritated Shri
Ramakrishna Paramhansa Ji. While all
his disciples were worried because of
this, no one could overcome their
repulse. Swami Vivekananda could not
bear his master’s pain and so he used to
lick the liquid and the pus from his
master’s mouth. All other disciples
found this repellent, but Swami Ji
treated it as a gift from his Guru.
It is difficult for me to imagine
someone so selfless. Someone like
Swami Vivekananda who dedicated his
complete life towards the betterment of
society. Someone who left all his
comforts and luxuries and lived a
difficult life. Someone who could easily
earn plenty of money, but kept the
nation above himself and worked day
and night for the nation while living in
complete poverty himself.
It is imperative to learn and
understand these aspects of the lives of
these great personalities. It’s been a high
time since we’ve highlighted the Swami
Ji of Chicago speech. It is now the time
to read his struggles and follow his path.
It is very easy to eulogise them, but it is
very difficult to obey them and that’s the
task. The young have to move, but they
have to obey at the same time.
Ae Mere Watan Lohri

Lohri is originated from the word ‘lohi’. The word means that there should be
rain and there should be a crop harvest. It is generally believed that around this
time, there should be rain, however lack of rain around this time can have a bad
effect on the crops.

Lohri is a Punjabi festival. Festivals of Punjab revolves around crops. At this

time, farmers have planted the crops and they are waiting for the rain and are
enjoying themselves. So Lohri is this joyful festival where farmers and their
families spend some quality time and enjoy their lives. In Lohri peanuts, chiwade,
gajjak, bhoga and kheer made of sugarcane juice are shared amongst each other.

 Punjabis celebrate the evening festivals, these evening
festivals are common in India. In Punjab, people come
together and cook and share among themselves and
celebrate with immense joy.

So why do we celebrate Lohri? Well, there is a story of

Doola-Bhatti associated with Lohri. There are two
versions of it. According to the first one, he was a famous
dacoit who saved two Brahman daughters Sundri and
Mundri from criminals and also got them married and
gave them sugar, that’s why Lohri songs consist of words
like Sundri, Mundri,
Doola-Bhatti and shakkar
(sugar). Another version

is that he was a Sardar of Akbar’s state of Punjab, who

stopped women extortion. That’s why he is very well known
and he worshipped till this date.

There is also a Puranic story related to Lohri. Prajapati

Daksh disliked Lord Shiv and condemned him. Thus, Shiv’s
wife and Daksh’s daughter, Sati gave up her life and
Prajapati Daksh had to face huge punishment for this. So on
this day, mothers repent and give gifts to daughters to free
Daksh from his crime.

Makar Sankranti is the festival of the Sun. This is the time when the sun gets
active and it is an important time for students and for those who practice
meditation. They can also achieve energy, Vitamin D, Calcium from the sun at this
time and thus, we worship Makar Sankranti.

This festival also marks the onset of a season change. The northern hemisphere of
the earth comes closer to the sun and thus, the duration of days increase and the
duration of nights decrease. According to the Western calendar, the change in the
duration of day and night begins from 21st December because of the western
concept of the winter solstice. While India works on very accurate calculations of the
Hindu calendar. We can also notice this from the change in dates from 14th January
to 15th January. Earlier, Makar Sakranti was celebrated on the 14th of January, but
now it is celebrated on the 15th because of the slowing speed of the earth.

 The festival is celebrated because of the season change and the farming of crops
by the farmers. There is a tradition of kite flying on this festival. Several cities in
India host kite flying competitions and thousands of people participate in kite flying.
The sky is dotted with beautiful kites. This tradition goes back to the time of Lord
Ram.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Lohri in Punjab and Pongal in South India. The
festival is linked with crops and food and is celebrated by different names in
different parts of the country.

Makar Sankranti is considered a very pious day and it affects the environment
positively. Til (sesame) is also especially consumed on this festival. It is also a
festival for the betterment of crops and a good season. People also begin good works
on this pious day. Special carnivals are also organised on the banks of some rivers in
this festival.
