CONDITIONAL
Conditional tenses are used to speculate about what could happen, what might have happened,
and what we wish would happen. In English, most sentences using the conditional contain the
word if. Many conditional forms in English are used in sentences that include verbs in one of the
past tenses. This usage is referred to as "the unreal past" because we use a past tense but we are
not actually referring to something that happened in the past. There are five main ways of
constructing conditional sentences in English. In all cases, these sentences are made up of
an if clause and a main clause. In many negative conditional sentences, there is an equivalent
sentence construction using "unless" instead of "if".
Type 1 A possible condition and its probable result Simple present Simple future
Type 2 A hypothetical condition and its probable result Simple past Present condit
conditional
Type 3 An unreal past condition and its probable result Past perfect Perfect condit
in the past
Mixed type An unreal past condition and its probable result Past perfect Present contdi
in the present
TYPE 1 CONDITIONAL
The type 1 conditional is used to refer to the present or future where the situation is real. The
type 1 conditional refers to a possible condition and its probable result. In these sentences the if
clause is in the simple present, and the main clause is in the simple future.
TYPE 2 CONDITIONAL
The type 2 conditional is used to refer to a time that is now or any time, and a situation that
is unreal. These sentences are not based on fact. The type 2 conditional is used to refer to a
hypothetical condition and its probable result. In type 2 conditional sentences, the if clause uses the
simple past, and the main clause uses the present conditional.
If clause Main clause
If this thing happened that thing would happen. (but I'm not sure this thing will happen) OR
that thing would be happening.
Read more about how to use the type 2 conditional with the present conditional and how to use the
present continuous conditional in type 2 conditional sentence.
TYPE 3 CONDITIONAL
The type 3 conditional is used to refer to a time that is in the past, and a situation that is contrary
to reality. The facts they are based on are the opposite of what is expressed. The type 3
conditional is used to refer to an unreal past condition and its probable past result. In type 3
conditional sentences, the if clause uses the past perfect, and the main clause uses the perfect
conditional.
If + past perfect perfect conditional or perfect continuous conditional
If this thing had happened that thing would have happened. (but neither of those things really happened)
OR
that thing would have been happening.
If you had studied harder you would have passed the exam.

Los "conditionales" son ciertas estructuras del inglés en las cuales, si cierta condición,
situación o circunstancia es verdadera, entonces sucede un resultado específico. Aquí
veremos varios tipos usuales de "condicionales"
Zero Conditional - (Type Zero) - Situación siempre verdaderaIf you freeze water, it turns
into ice.First Conditional - (Type I) - Situación real o posibleIf it rains today, I'll stay at
home.Second Conditional - (Type II) - Situación hipotéticaIf I won the lottery, I would
travel around the world.Third Conditional - (Type III) - Situación hipotética del pasadoIf I
had won the lottery, I would have traveled around the world.
Conditional: wish + past simple- Deseo sobre una situación irrealI wish I were rich (but I
am not)Conditional: wish + past perfect - Deseo sobre el pasadoI wish I had learned
English when I was younger (but I didn't)Conditional: wish + would - Expresando
desagrado o irritaciónI wish you would stop making that noise
Palabras para expresar condiciones: unless, provided, …You won't pass the exam unless
you study harder.

Conditional Sentences
IF Condition Result
Ejemplos:
If you heat water to 100° C, it boils. / Water boils if you heat it to 100° C. (Si calientas agua
a 100 ° C hierve.)
If I don’t practice the piano everyday I play poorly. / I play the piano poorly if Idon’t
practice everyday. (Si no practico el piano cada día toco mal.)
Does your mom get mad if you don’t call her? / If you don’t call your
mom, does she get mad? (¿Si no llamas a tu madre, se enoja?)
Nota: Podemos cambiar el orden de las frases sin cambiar el significado. También, en general con este
tipo de condicional, podemos sustituir “if” por “when” sin alterar el significado.
Este tipo de condicional se utiliza para el futuro y en los casos en que es muy probable que la condición
pasará.
IF Condition Result
Ejemplos:
If Bill studies, he will pass the exam. / Bill will pass the exam if he studies. (Si Bill estudia,
aprobará el examen.)
If it doesn’t rain, we will go to the beach. / We will go to the beach if it doesn’t rain. (Si
no llueve, iremos a la playa.)
Will you take the train if you miss the bus? If you miss the bus, will you takethe
train? (¿Cogerás el tren si pierdes el bus?)
Nota: Se puede usar algunos verbos modales en vez de “will” para cambiar la probabilidad
o expresar una opinión. Para más información, ver la lección sobre los verbos modales.
Ejemplos:
If it doesn’t rain, we may go to the beach. (Significado: Con el uso de “may”, el significado de esta
frase cambia. Ahora, el hablante reconoce que puede ir a la playa, pero no está tan seguro de si irá.)
If it doesn’t rain, we should go to the beach. (Significado: En este caso, el uso de “should” expresa la
opinión del hablante.)
If it doesn’t rain, we can go to the beach. (Significado: “Can” significa que es posible ir a la playa,
pero no indica la probabilidad.)
Se utiliza el tipo 2 para expresar una posibilidad irreal en el presente, como un deseo o un sueño, o para
una acción en el futuro no tan probable.
IF Condition Result
Ejemplos:
If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world. / I would travel around the world
if I won the lottery. (Si ganara la lotería, viajaría alrededor del mundo.)
If Rachel had more time, she would learn to play the guitar. / Rachel would learn to
play the guitar if she had more time. (Si Rachel tuviera más tiempo, aprendería a tocar la guitarra.)
Would you be happy if you were to get married? / If you were to get
married, would you be happy? (¿Estarías feliz si te casaras?)
Nota: Como en el tipo 1, se pueden usar otros verbos modales en vez de “would” para cambiar el
significado y la posibilidad.
IF Condition Result
Ejemplos:
If I had known then what I know now, I would have done things differently. / Iwould
have done things differently if I had known then what I know now. (Si hubiera sabido en el
pasado lo que sé ahora, hubiera hecho las cosas de manera diferente.)
Suzanne wouldn’t have had the heart attack if she had gone on a diet as her doctor
recommended. / If Suzanne had gone on a diet as her doctor recommended
she wouldn’t have had the heart attack. (Suzanne no hubiera tenido el infarto si hubiera hecho dieta
como su médico le recomendó.)
Would you have liked to go to university if you had been able to afford it? / If you had
been able to afford it, would you have liked to go to university? (¿Te hubiera gustado ir a la
universidad si te lo hubieras permitido pagar?)
Nota: Como en los tipos 1 y 2, se pueden usar otros verbos modales en vez de “would” para cambiar el
significado y la probabilidad.

Zero Conditional
Es el que se refiere a las verdades universales, es decir, lo que
ocurre siempre que se de esa condición. Por ejemplo:
First Conditional
A este condicional también se le llama condicional real porque es el que usamos
para hablar de hechos reales o probables que se pueden dar en el futuro.
La estructura es similar a la anterior pero le añadiremos algo nuevo:
elWILL como marca de futuro. Por ejemplo:
Second Conditional
Es el llamado condicional imaginario o irreal.
¡Ojo! ¿Qué pasa cuando el verbo que queremos emplear es el verbo to be?
Recordemos que este condicional es el irreal. A mí personalmente me gusta
llamarlo el condicional de Beyoncé. Ein??
Dejad que me explique, recordáis la famosa canción If I were a boy ♫♪ ♫ de la
cantante norteamericana?
If Maria had worked harder, she would have got (gotten en inglés americano) a
better job
If I study, I will pass
Pero, ¿y si la pasamos a tercera persona del singular?
If she studies, she will pass
¿y si usamos la forma negativa?
If she doesn’t study, she won’t pass
2. Cuidado cuando invertimos el orden de la frase condicional. El orden de los
factores no altera el producto pero puede alterarnos a nosotros. A ver, es lo
mismo decir:
Si yo tuviera dinero, me compraría un deportivo
Yo me compraría un deportivo si yo tuviera dinero.
Lo importante es localizar la oración del IF para saber en qué tiempo ha de ir.
De este modo nos evitaremos, repetir el will o would en los dos lados.
3. LA COMA
La coma parece que es un elemento decorativo pero lo cierto es que cumple
su función.
Fijaos en el ejemplo anterior. Si la oración condicional comienza por if, acordaos
de poner la coma. Pero, si la oración condicional está separada por if, no la
pondremos.
Explicado de otra manera:
0
We have dinner if he comes to town
En el condicional 3 también nos sirve esta técnica causa-resultado y el uso de
la coma. Tanto puedes decir:
If Amelia had won the award, life would have changed–Si Amelia hubiera ganado
el premio,la vida habría cambiado.
como
Life would have changed if Amelia had won the award–La vida habría cambiado si
Amelia hubiera ganado el premio.
¿Ha quedado clarito el condicional? Vamos a hacer unos ejercicios para tenerlo
todavía más claro.

Imperative
The imperative
Most of us have noticed that when we were pupils or even students, our teachers used a
certain number of phrases or sentences in order to give orders, warnings, or some
advice: 'Stop talking', 'Open your books' ' Be quiet' ' Revise your lessons' and so on!
The form which has been used by our teachers is called 'The imperative form'.
The form: To form the imperative, we usually use the base form of the verb without
'To'. Example: Go,Open, Close etc. Also, It's very important to notice that the command
is given to you (Either singular or plural). The base form of the verb is preceded by 'Let'
in the first and third person commands, and followed by: me, it,him, her, us, them.
Example:
Affirmative form
Base form of the verb + Object Open the door.
Using the imperative form: The imperative can be used to give direct orders, warnings,
instructions, advice, requests, invitations, and also to make suggestions.
- Please, keep off the grass|Keep off the grass, please. Public notice
- Take the first left onto Pine street and continue for three blocks. Direction
Example:

' A'. Ejemplo: Ir , Abrir , Cerrar , etc. Además, es muy importante tener en cuenta que el
comando se le da a usted ( singular o plural ). La forma básica del verbo es precedido por
"Let 'en los comandos primera y tercera persona, y seguido por: yo, él, él, ella, nosotros,
ellos.

companionship; always equal to himself.

eyes from the visitor to her aunt, Anna Pavlovna mentioned each one's name

Use of Passive
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known,
however, who or what is performing the action.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know,
however, who did it.
Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following
example shows:
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g.
You have made a mistake.).
Form of Passive
Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)
the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is
dropped)
Examples of Passive
writes a letter.
Simple Present Active: Rita
Examples of Passive
is writing a letter.
Present Progressive Active: Rita
As you can see in the examples, adding by Rita does not sound very elegant. That’s why it
is usually dropped.
Verbs without an object (intransitive verb) normally cannot form a personal passive
sentence (as there is no object that can become the subject of the passive sentence). If you
want to use an intransitive verb in passive voice, you need an impersonal construction –
therefore this passive is called Impersonal Passive.
Impersonal Passive is not as common in English as in some other languages (e.g. German,
Latin). In English, Impersonal Passive is only possible with verbs of perception (e. g. say,
think, know).
Example: They say that women live longer than men. – It is said that women live longer than
men.
Example: They say that women live longer than men. – Women are said to live longer than men.
The subject of the subordinate clause (women) goes to the beginning of the sentence; the
verb of perception is put into passive voice. The rest of the sentence is added using an
infinitive construction with 'to' (certain auxiliary verbs and thatare dropped).
Sometimes the term Personal Passive is used in English lessons if the indirect object of an
active sentence is to become the subject of the passive sentence.
