• ​In your Lab Report you must include diagram, observations/readings, plots, calculations and
results.

• ​You must individually write detailed discussion and analysis of results obtained. All plots must be neatly
drawn with clearly marked label.

• ​Observations/readings should be verified by

TA.

• ​Penalty will be awarded for late submission. After completion of experiment the Lab Report should be submitted
within a week.

Experiment: ZnO thin film by dip

coating
(a) Prepare a ZnO film by sol gel using spin coating unit (b)
Measure the optical transmission and thickness of the coated film

(c) Determine the band gap ​

Apparatus/chemical

required
Precision weighing machine. dip coater,, thickness measurement system, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, furnace,
ultrasonic bath, deionized water, zinc acetate (Zn(CH​3​CO​2​)​2​.2H​2​O), Methanol (CH​3​OH), Polyvinyl alcohol
(​(CH​2​CH(OH))​n​), Acetone, Ethanol, Glass substrates. Hot plate with magnetic stirrer, magnetic beads, micro-syringe,
heat and chemical resistant gloves, alumina silica boat and beakers ​Precautions
• ​Glassware must be cleaned thoroughly and and dried before starting the

experiment. ​• ​Use gloves and safety while preparing the solution

• ​Avoid contact with hot surfaces and
chemicals

• ​Substrates must be cleaned in ultrasonic bath before depositing a

film on it
• ​Substrates must be well attached to the chuck before it starts
spinning
• ​Heating treatment must be the same for all
 substrates
• ​Always keep the solution covered to avoid any undesired
element
• ​Read instructions for furnace before annealing the
substrates

• ​Read instructions for spectrophotometer and thickness measurement system before making measurements
