Sustainable Manufacturing
- outcome of the Advanced Manufacturing
Manufacturing meant, so far
exponentially destroying the Nature.
But we cannot give up to
manufacturing and in the same time
we want to “protect” the Nature -
there is a need for Advanced
Manufacturing.
Manufacturing activities are de facto
split in two main categories:
- the ones with high inertia, big size, basic societal needs. E.g. furniture, food,
clothes, shoes, construction materials.
- the others based on deep research, new technics, large correlation in
innovating things. E.g. electronics, genetics, aviation, chemistry of materials.

Sustainable Manufacturing
- outcome of the Advanced Manufacturing
The Advanced Manufacturing is different comparing to Manufacturing, due to:
- huge rate of development (dynamics) and compulsory access to fundamental research;
- including Innovation as a must of almost everyday activity;
- investment has low return on a short basis, and this cannot be sustained by small and
medium enterprises.
The Advanced Manufacturing
creates market and educates
clients, comparing to
Manufacturing that simply deal
with competition on existing
markets and put a lot of
emphasis on reducing the costs.

A main danger for the Advanced Manufacturing is the so called “Research oriented to
a well defined scope” - very common request in EC financed projects. Cooperation
between Science and Technology is a recent issue. Technics is much older than Science.
The moment people realised that Science can be a profit source, the Research oriented
to a well defined scope has shown up.
Consequently we face today the existence of the “industry of discovery”.
The best example in the history is the story of Alchemy that has a clear target:
enriching the people and saving his health, making his life longer.
Aristoteles concept was that Nature always tends to perfection, it is then obvious that
common metals, oxidative, are “ill”; the philosophic stone could cure them, by
transforming them into gold, and, the same stone can redo the health of people.
We see that the scope of Alchemy is perfectly defined: its results after more than 1500
years is in fact null. Alchemy is the the most eloquent example of Oriented Research to a
Defined Goal without any theoretical fundament.
