Conclusion
The Innovation is a must for engineering the Sustainability.

Reasoning for reaching the Conclusion

1. Sustainability versus Human condition - the artificiality of the
concept.
2. Manufacturing, Advanced Manufacturing and the Fundamental
Research oriented to a well defined scope.
3. Innovation versus Research, as nightmare versus dream.
4. Advanced Manufacturing towards Sustainability via Innovation -
“the way, the truth and the life”.

Sustainability versus Human condition

- the artificiality of the concept.
“I contend that for the Human beings to try to
protect the environment into Humanity
development is like a man standing in a bucket
and trying to lift himself up by the handle.”

The Humanity has been ever developed

solely on the cost of destroying the
Nature - wood for heating, coal for industry,
oil for transportation.

We do not have enough knowledge to support her; we may try

to harm her as less as possible.

Sustainability versus Human condition

- the artificiality of the concept.
Since the value of development
is almost equal to the cost of
destroying the Nature,
Sustainability, i.e. more
comfort and protecting Nature
simultaneously, is an absolute
contradiction.

However, let’s assume that “there

is such thing as a free lunch”,
what then is Sustainability?

Sustainability versus Human condition - Sustainable Development

There is no crystal clear picture of

what “sustain the Earth” means,
however developing regions can
only be done by Manufacturing,
i.e. by adding values. We call this
Sustainable Manufacturing.
DEFINITION: A manufacturing
system that produces value with the
TARGET of “Maximise the total
value”. Consequently, we have to
make a shift by the “Industrial
transformation”.

Dogma for sustainable manufacturing

1.Total value is the sum of values natural and artificial.
2. Natural value is functionality of space, eco-system and resource.
3. Artificial value is functionality of primitive services, material and product.

Sustainable Manufacturing
- outcome of the Advanced Manufacturing
Manufacturing meant, so far
exponentially destroying the Nature.
But we cannot give up to
manufacturing and in the same time
we want to “protect” the Nature -
there is a need for Advanced
Manufacturing.
Manufacturing activities are de facto
split in two main categories:

- the ones with high inertia, big size, basic societal needs. E.g. furniture, food,
clothes, shoes, construction materials.
- the others based on deep research, new technics, large correlation in
innovating things. E.g. electronics, genetics, aviation, chemistry of materials.

Sustainable Manufacturing
- outcome of the Advanced Manufacturing

Advanced Manufacturing is a family of activities (software+hardware) that:

a. depend on the use and coordination of information, automation, computation,
software, sensing and networking (in broad sense - software);
b. make use of cutting-edge materials and emerging capabilities enabled by
physical and biological sciences, for example nanotechnologies, chemistry,
biology (in broad sense - hardware).

The Manufacturing is driven by Applied Research (Innovation mainly from

other domains -materials with appearance of wood, modifying food by genetics,
new construction involving electronics, solar panel, led etc).
The Advanced Manufacturing is based on Fundamental Research
(Innovation from deep inter-connection of many domains. Graphene is from
Fundamental Physics, 1.5 nm micro-controllers is out of Quantum, drugs against
difficult diseases are results of Genetics and advanced Chemistry.

Sustainable Manufacturing
- outcome of the Advanced Manufacturing
The Advanced Manufacturing is different comparing to Manufacturing, due to:
- huge rate of development (dynamics) and compulsory access to fundamental research;
- including Innovation as a must of almost everyday activity;
- investment has low return on a short basis, and this cannot be sustained by small and
medium enterprises.
The Advanced Manufacturing
creates market and educates
clients, comparing to
Manufacturing that simply deal
with competition on existing
markets and put a lot of
emphasis on reducing the costs.

The Advanced Manufacturing requests an Innovation Policy that put together

fundamental science with innovation, two aspects with contradictory behaviour.

Innovation versus Research, as nightmare versus dream

Preliminaries
1. Make distinction between Invention (not driven by client) and
Innovation(always driven by certain client).
Ford said once: “my client asked me for a better horse”.

2. Research has a rate of Failure of more

than 90% (REAL research), and Innovation
must have a rate of Success of more than
90% to be considered “real”(thing/service put
on the market). Consequently, the best rate of
combined Research+Innovation that can
bring money from the market out of money
spent with research is 10%*90%=9%, since
the activities are independent one of the other.

Innovation versus Research, as nightmare versus dream

1. Research aims at creating new knowledge about facts, but Innovation
aims at creating new values* for society.
2. Research is conducted by an authorized method: “scientific method”, but
Innovation has not yet an authorized method.
3. Innovation has two missions: creating values for society and establishing
a general method of value-creation.

4. Results of Innovation can not be verified systematically due to lack of

general method of research, hence social acceptance is the criterion.

5. Research is analytical but Innovation is synthetic.

6. Research is normally conducted within a single scientific discipline but

Innovation is basically discipline-free.

* The word “value” is used here in a broad sense: some knowledge effective to society

Innovation versus Research, as nightmare versus dream

A main danger for the Advanced Manufacturing is the so called “Research oriented to
a well defined scope” - very common request in EC financed projects. Cooperation
between Science and Technology is a recent issue. Technics is much older than Science.
The moment people realised that Science can be a profit source, the Research oriented
to a well defined scope has shown up.
Consequently we face today the existence of the “industry of discovery”.
The best example in the history is the story of Alchemy that has a clear target:
enriching the people and saving his health, making his life longer.
Aristoteles concept was that Nature always tends to perfection, it is then obvious that
common metals, oxidative, are “ill”; the philosophic stone could cure them, by
transforming them into gold, and, the same stone can redo the health of people.
We see that the scope of Alchemy is perfectly defined: its results after more than 1500
years is in fact null. Alchemy is the the most eloquent example of Oriented Research to a
Defined Goal without any theoretical fundament.

Advanced Manufacturing towards Sustainability via Innovation

- “the way, the truth and the life”
Recap the demonstration

1. Protecting Nature has been ever fully opposite to Humanity development, so

that Sustainability is just a political concept, an alternative to divert the
attention from the real problems of the Humanity.
2. Assuming this concept exists, its definition still contain development, and
development cannot be done without Manufacturing, adding value.
3. Simply manufacturing has contributed to Nature destruction, so that we need a
new concept, the Advanced manufacturing, based on natural science and math.
4. Advanced Manufacturing links the knowledge with the market via the
Innovation, the core necessary to proof the truth in any market economy.
5. Product and process innovation are intertwined. Decline of manufacturing in
a region sets a chain reaction. Under-development is then closer.
The request of Innovation Policy is, in this context, a fundamental must.
