1. COURSE PROFILE
1.1 Course Description
This course provides an in-depth discussion of the historical development, characteristics and types
of tests well as guidelines in constructing different kinds of tests. This also covers scoring
procedures, rubrics for evaluating tests, item analysis and evaluating literary competence and
achievements.

2. COURSE DESIGN
2.1 Course Aims
The course aims to:
1. Provide students an overview of the main concepts of Linguistics.
2. Equip the students on the sub-disciplines of linguistics; Morphology, Phonetics,
Phonology, Syntax and Semantics (language sounds, how sounds interact, how
words and sentences are built, meaning and how we use meaning in conversation.)
3. Enable students to use language fluently.

Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:
a1. Define assessment, evaluation, testing, measurement and discuss the
issues in language testing.
a2. Display critical thinking skills on the issues confronting language testing
and can show competence in choosing and constructing appropriate listening,
reading, writing and speaking test.

b. Application
Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:
b1. Construct different types, factors and characteristics of writing tests and
tasks.

b2. Appreciate acquiring macro skills as part of language teaching and explain
the importance of constructing a test.

Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:
c1. Critique and display competence in choosing and constructing appropriate
reading test, listening, writing and speaking.

c2. Produce portfolio of recordings and documents to reflect the quality and
progress of test.
