Background  
Sheikh  Hamdan  Bin  Mohammed  bin  Rashid  Sports  Complex  (Dubai  Sports  Complex)  is  a 
multipurpose stadium completed in 2010, launched by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al 
Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. It hosted the FINA 
World  Swimming  Championships  2010  (25  m),  with  participants  from  more  than  130  countries, 
which held for the first time in an Arab country. The stadium will host international aquatic events. It 
has total capacity of 15,000 spectators. Beside aquatic events, it will also accommodate dry sports 
events such as basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, social and exhibition events. 
This iconic project was built at an estimated cost of AED 1.1 billion.

Case Study: Dubai Sports Complex 

 
Scope  
Dubai  sports  complex  is  one  of  the  landmark  projects  in  Gulf  region.  The  innovative  structure 
revitalized by Faulkner Browns Architects and the main contractor for executing the project is Saudi 
Bin Laden.
 
Dubai  Aquatic  centre,  said  to  be  the  world's 
best  indoor  aquatic  facility,  is  the  key  element 
of the arena located at the edge of Dubai Land. 
The centre is a two‐tier golden teardrop‐shaped 
facility with an Olympic standard 50‐metre pool 
along  with  another  50‐metre  pool  with  a 
moveable floor. 
The  project  also  includes  changing  rooms  for 
400 athletes, rooms for umpires and automatic 

control,  a  stadium  that  can  accommodate  3,000 

spectators, main reception area, VIP waiting area, 
other  waiting  areas,  multi‐purpose  halls,  health 
club,  gymnasium,  training  pools,    external  garden 
with  100  trees,  flower  ponds,  an  open  area  for 
exercises,  number  of  restaurants,  VIP  car  parking 
area,  public  parking  areas  for  1,500  cars,  and  an 
area  for  parking  buses  of  clubs,  schools,  colleges 
and universities and all other service facilities. 
 
Results 
Unicroma Series and Technocroma Series, classic products of RAK ceramics were chosen to complete 
the  sophisticated  look  of  this  prestigious  project,  by  supplying  the  tiles  that  are  suitable  for  high 
volume of foot traffic and meet the contemporary design of specifications.
