Photo-Journalism Exhibit
The exhibit I chose was “Eradicating Child Labour”. It was about showing
how many children are stuck in situations where they have no choice but to
work in unsafe and inhumane conditions. It also mentions how the ILO has
helped people with this issue through creating minimum-age labour
standards in specific sectors.
In this image there is a child forced into labour carrying rocks out of a
quarry in a whicker basket on his back. I believe he is a child labourer
because in most developed countries children would have the choice not to
work in a place as dangerous as a mine and would most likely choose not to
do manual labour for work.
This photo achieves the goals of bringing awareness and justice to our
world because before I saw it, I didn’t realize how real child labour was in
our world. It just seemed like some far off concept that could happen but
just didn’t.
If I was able to inform or create change in order to assist this cause I
would advertise charities that focus on third world countries that help to
create positive change in their societies or governments. If enough people
find out about this issue and seek out these charities to donate to then this
issue could be dealt with easily. The main problem in solving this issue is the
fact that there aren’t laws in certain places to stop child labour.
