UN Exhibit

Photo-Journalism Exhibit
The exhibit I chose was “Eradicating Child Labour”. It was about showing
how many children are stuck in situations where they have no choice but to
work in unsafe and inhumane conditions. It also mentions how the ILO has
helped people with this issue through creating minimum-age labour
standards in specific sectors.
In this image there is a child forced into labour carrying rocks out of a
quarry in a whicker basket on his back. I believe he is a child labourer
because in most developed countries children would have the choice not to
work in a place as dangerous as a mine and would most likely choose not to
do manual labour for work.
This photo achieves the goals of bringing awareness and justice to our
world because before I saw it, I didn’t realize how real child labour was in
our world. It just seemed like some far off concept that could happen but
just didn’t.
If I was able to inform or create change in order to assist this cause I
would advertise charities that focus on third world countries that help to
create positive change in their societies or governments. If enough people
find out about this issue and seek out these charities to donate to then this
issue could be dealt with easily. The main problem in solving this issue is the
fact that there aren’t laws in certain places to stop child labour.

Job – Medical Services

Medical services exist in the UN to make sure that everyone that
needs it can get proper healthcare. Whether this is by performing surgery,
facilitating checkups, or by administrating a hospital or other healthcare
organization it still helps those in need.
A medical officer in field missions might help run a clinic or hospital,
fight outbreaks of various diseases, facilitate checkups, teach health
education programs, or address work environment issues. Positions in this
field require an education in clinical medicine and in-depth knowledge of
health.
In terms of education, a medical officer will require an MD in medicine
and fluency in English. Knowledge of a second official UN language or a
certification in ECG, CPR, or Life-Support is also an advantage. Those
applying for nursing positions must be a graduate of either a Baccalaureate
Nursing Program or a Diploma Program.
A medical officer will be expected to be skilled in specific areas in
order to get a position in the UN. A medical officer is expected to be able to
communicate with patients and explain things to their colleagues, be able to
work as a team with their fellow medical officers, be able to work and input
medical information on a computer, and be able to understand what is
wrong with a patient and quickly decide what the best course of action to
take is.
In order to prepare for this occupation, I would need to take biology
and health courses in the future in order to be accepted into medical school.
After being accepted I would have to study at a university for long enough to
get a doctorate so that I meet the job’s requirements, and then work on my
interpersonal and decision-making skills as I feel that those two areas are my
weak points.
