The effects of Standardized Examination on Senior High students of Canduman

National High School

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Rationale

Ever since the emergence of school institutes, examinations have always been a part

of it. Examinations are done to evaluate the learner’s comprehension in regards to the

subject. In addition, this also shows which part of the lesson each student seems to have

taken the most interest in and has remembered.

As the school institutes becomes more unified under city level, actions are taken to

assess the effectiveness on the implementation of K to 12 Curriculum in Mandaue City.

Hence, the Mandaue DepEd Division on July 31, 2019 ordered Memorandum no. 277 s. 2019

hereby states that the Division of Mandaue City shall conduct a Division Wide Unified

Quarterly Assessment. In compliance with the memorandum, unified or standardized test

will be given to the students taking up the same subject at the same time out of all the schools

in Mandaue City.

Little is known about the impacts on the unified examination among the students of

Mandaue City. According to a blog from Whitby School, states that standardized testing can

benefit students as long as it’s looked at in the right light but can also bring negative effects

on the students when looked at the wrong perspective. These assessments carry important
consequences for students, teachers and schools: low scores can prevent a student from

progressing to the next grade level or lead to teacher firings and school closures (Morin,

2011) (Kolodner, 2011).

In the past years, this kind of exam has been a long-due debated dilemma among the

experts.

The researchers wanted to conduct this study to evaluate the impacts of the Division

Wide Unified Examination and also to perceive which part had huge impact in terms of

academic and psychological effect on the senior students of Canduman National High School.
