STRENTH QUIZ 1 FEBRUARY 5, 2008

SECTION EF

Solve the following problems.

1) Determine the tensile stress in the 0.25-inch diameter cables (that form a diamond
shape) of the device shown in the figure below. Also calculate the compressive stress in
the spacer bar (in the center). The cross-sectional area of the spacer bar is 0.2 in 2. (20
pts)

2) Determine the shearing stress between the shaft and the circular flange in the figure
below. Also calculate the bearing stress between the flange and the support. (20 pts)

3) A steel plate has a rectangular cross-section. Its width is 10 inches (x-direction) and its
length is 12 inches (y-direction). It is subjected to uniformly distributed normal tensile
forces along its edges. Its width was observed to increase by 0.0020 inches and its length
increased by 0.0048 inches. Determine the normal stresses in the x and y directions that
correspond to these deformations. (E = 30 x 106 psi and v = 0.25) (20 pts)
4) A structural system consists of three joined bars of different materials and geometries,
as shown in the figure below. Initially, the entire system is stress free, but then the right
support is moved 3 mm to the right, whereas the left support remains fixed in space.
Determine the stresses in each bar due to this 3 mm displacement. (20 pts)

5) A rigid horizontal bar of weight 50 kN is connected to two rods of negligible weight as

shown in the figure below. If the temperature of both rods is raised by 35 oC, find the
resulting stresses in the two bars. (20 pts)
