INDONESIAN VALUES AND IDEOLOGIES

Course Description:
The course is designed to explore and elaborate the historical and contemporary foundations
and trajectories of the Indonesian society from the pre-colonial period to the post-Reformasi
era. Primarily, the course will encourage students to re-read the history of the nation-building
of Indonesia; take a reflection on the internal diversity and the complex-and-bitter colonial
processes up to the construction of Indonesia as a nation. The course will further investigate
various social, political, cultural and economic challenges as well as potentials and opportunities
which have been being faced by Indonesia ever since; including the Reformasi 1998 and latest
developments within the state and society at large.

Course Objectives:
1. To build understanding among the student on the plurality of Indonesian cultures and
make critical analyses on its advantages and disadvantages in terms of its construction,
utilization, negotiation and further trajectories in this global era.
2. To build recognition among the students on the important of having values, identity,
characters and ideology in order to be a strong Nation in a global era.
3. T have comprehensive understanding of the Indonesians socio-cultural and economic-
politic behavior, this course will discuss Indonesian values and ideology and the debate
on them, including their contestation, transformation and their impact to social
practices.

Course Method and Tasks/Assignments
• Intensive reading & reading report. There are 9 articles to read and discuss and 2
movies to watch/review. Every student should write at least 6 500-words-long reviews
of those 9 articles; with article 04, article 05, and article 06 as a compulsory task.

• Groups Discussion: Students will be grouped into 4 groups, each group will give
presentation based on selected reading material for the specific weeks.

• Group Movie Review: Students – grouped into 4 – will watch and review 2 movies
presented during the class session. The Review will be about 2-3 pages.

• Extended reading review as the Mid exam/assignment.

• Essay on Indonesian Values and Ideologies. Students individually are obliged to write
down a short essay – about 3-4 pages – relevance to the course themes as the final
exam/assignment; Suggested themes are:

▪ Managing the multicultural society of Indonesia


▪ The Future of Indonesian Youths: Millennial Challenges
▪ Promoting Social-Economic Justice for Indonesians
▪ Indonesian Democratization: Opportunities and Challenges
• Class session will be structured as follow:

▪ 30 minute Quizzes and/or introductory lecturer


▪ 60 minute students presentation and discussion
▪ 60 minutes lecturer
• Grades are based on individual weekly article reviews, 1 group presentation paper,
class participation and Essay on Indonesian Values and Ideologies. Student who fail to
produces one or all works mentioned will not receive grades. The grades are based on
the following accumulation assignment:

▪ Individual article review 30%


▪ Group Presentation 15%
▪ Group Movie Review 20%
▪ Mid & Final exam 30%
▪ Participation: class attendance, mini quizzes, contribution to class discussion
5%

Grading Scheme

A Students demonstrated the ability to understand the whole materials of


the course; completed all individual tasks and participated in all
students-study groups with excellent quality and originality.
B Students demonstrated the ability to understand the whole materials of
the course; completed all individual tasks and participated in students-
study groups with good quality and originality.

C Students were struggle to understand the whole materials of the course;
but completed all individual tasks and participated in students-study
groups with decent quality and originality.
D Students completed all individual tasks and participated in students-
study groups; but showed a lack of understanding of the materials of the
course.
E Not completed any individual tasks and students-study groups
