• Course Objectives
• This course aims to give students a solid grounding in Probability
and Statistics. Students will be introduced to probability theory
and inference theory. Topics to be covered include the notions of
probability and conditional probability, discrete and continuous
distributions of random variables, basic estimation methods,
hypothesis tesing confidence intervals, convergence theorems, law
of large numbers, central limit theorem, analysis of variance and
regression analysis. Students will learn the relevant theory and
gain the ability to formulate and solve practical problems in Civil
Engineering.
• The module covers both the completion of mathematical
calculations by hand as well as by the use of software and the
interpretation of quantitative results.
Course Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the successful student will be able to:
· Use appropriate statistical techniques to summarise and interpret
numerical data;
· Calculate unconditional and conditional probabilities;
· Work with discrete and continuous random variables and their
distribution functions;
· Critically analyse the appropriateness of using different statistical tools
in a given situation;
· Analyse data and work with multivariate probability distributions;
· Use functions of random variables;
· Understand the Sampling Distributions, Convergence Theorems, Law of
Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem;
· Use different estimation techniques knowing the properties of
estimators;
· Conduct different hypothesis-testing procedures;
· Work individually as well as in a team and appreciate the
importance of attendance, cooperation, contribution and
responsibility in completing seminar questions and participating
in problem solving classes.Make analysis of variance and
estimate regression models;
· Use software package R to analyse data and produce suitable
output;
· Work individually as well as in a team and appreciate the
importance of attendance, cooperation, contribution and
responsibility in completing seminar questions and participating
in problem solving classes.
