1. (a) A compound tube consists of a steel tube 150 mm internal diameter and 170 mm external
diameter and a brass tube of 170 mm internal diameter and 190 mm external diameter. The
two tubes are of the same length. The compound tube carries an axial load of
1000 kN. Find the stresses and the load carried by each tube and the amount it shortens.
Length of each tube is 140 mm. Take E for steel as 2 × 105 N/mm2 and for brass as
1 × 105 N/mm2.

(b) A thin 40 cm × 40 cm flat plate is pulled at 2 m/sec horizontally through a 3.6 mm thick
oil layer sandwiched between two plates, one stationary and other moving at constant

speed of 0.3 m/sec as shown below. The dynamic viscosity of oil = 0.027 Pa.sec. Assuming
the velocity in each oil layer to vary linearly.

(d) The internal diameter of a steel shaft is 70% of external diameter. The shaft is to transmit
3500 kW at 200 rpm. If the maximum allowable stress in the shaft material is 50 MPa,
calculate the diameter of the shaft. Find also the maximum twist of the shaft when it is
stressed to the maximum permissible value. The length of the shaft is 4 m. Take G = 80 GPa.

2. (a) A conical tube of length 2 m fixed vertically with its smaller end upwards. The velocity head,
pressure head at upper ends are 1.27 m and 2.50 m respectively. The velocity head and
pressure head at lower ends are 0.203 m and 5.407 m respectively. Find the direction of flow.

(b) A solid circular shaft of diameter 50 mm is subjected to pure bending of 3.5 kN-m. Find the
maximum twisting moment that can be applied on this shaft such that the material of the shaft
does not yield. Use Tresca’s theory (maximum shear stress theory) of failure. The yield stress
of the material in uniaxial tension is 400 N/mm?

4. (a) Density of liquid is determine by an old 1 cm dia cylindrical hydrometer whose dimensions
are completely washed down. The hydrometer is first dropped in water and water level is

that liquid.

(b) A steel tape of nominal length 30 m was used to measure a line PQ by suspending it between
supports if the measured length was 29.861 m when the slope angle was 3º45', and the mean
temperature and tension applied were respectively 10ºC and 100 N, determine the corrected
horizontal length.

The standard length of the tape was 30.004 m at 20ºC and 44.5 N tension. The tape
weighed 0.16 N/m and had a cross-sectional area of 2 mm2 . E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 .
 = 1.12 × 10–5 per ºC.
