ENGR 417 – Pipeline Integrity Management Assignment 1

Due Date: 2020 February 14th, 11:59 pm, submit on UBC Canvas
Neatness (+5 Mark)
1. Water flows through a horizontal pipe at a speed of 1 m/s. The pipe consists of two
sections of diameters 4 inches and 2 inches with a smooth reducing section. The pressure
difference between the two pipe sections is measured by a mercury manometer. Neglecting
frictional effects, determine the differential height of mercury between the two pipe sections.
Assume we know the followings:
𝜌𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1000𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 ,
𝜌𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑦 = 13530 kg/𝑚3 ,

g = 9.8 m/𝑠 2 .

2. Complete mixing of water containing fluoride occurs at the junction of four pipes. The
incoming fluoride concentration in pipes 1 and 2 are 0.8 and 0.5 mg/lit, respectively. As
shown below, the flow rates in pipes 1, 2, and 3 are 10 lit/s, 20 lit/s, respectively. If the
conditions in the junction are steady, determine the fluoride concentrations in pipe 3 and 4.

3. A long pipe carries water from a reservoir with water surface elevation of 730 m. The
𝑉2
pipe’s head loss is given as ℎ𝑓 = 0.015 ( ) ( ). The pipe diameter is 50 cm and discharge
𝐿
𝐷 2𝑔
is 1 m3/s. A minimum pressure of 200 kpa is required at a point located at an elevation of
100m and 5 km downstream of the reservoir. Does the pipe meet this requirement and, if not,
how much head should be added to the flow?
4. Water is pumped up a hill into a tank. The tank is large relative to the incoming flow
(thus the change in the elevation of its water surface is negligible). Determine the rate of
inflow into the tank given the information in the figure.

5. Write approximately 50 words about pipeline integrity management considering the

figure below with 3 influential factors (selection of factors is optional). Explain the relation of
the chosen factors with each other and how they affect the pipelines’ application.

6. Write approximate 300 words with 3 images (max) about one technology advance in oil
& gas pipeline such as welding, threaded coupling with O-ring, seamless pipe, Pigs, etc.
Please conduct a research about the technology you choose. You need to provide the
following information in your description:
• Name of the technology
• Source of information (where you retrieved this information)
• Advantages (why this technology is an advance)
• Breadth of use (how this technology is being used)
• Current trends (what this technology will be in the future)
• Other relevant information (you think it is important to present)
